SAN FRANCISCO, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Google Inc. on Monday announced that it is bidding for patent portfolio of Nortel Networks in the bankruptcy auction for the Canadian telecommunications equipment maker.In a press release, the Toronto-based Nortel said Google has agreed to buy all of its remaining patents and patent applications for 900 million U.S. dollars in cash.Nortel, which filed for bankruptcy protection in 2009, expects the auction to be held in June this year, pending Canadian and U.S. court approvals.Nortel has selected Google's bid as the "stalking-horse bid," or the starting point against which others will bid prior to the auction.The agreement with Google includes the planned sale of about 6, 000 Nortel patents and patent applications spanning wireless, wireless 4G, data networking, optical, voice, Internet, service provider and semiconductors.According to Nortel, the patent portfolio touches nearly every aspect of telecommunications and additional markets, including Internet search and social networking."This is an unprecedented opportunity to acquire one of the most extensive and compelling patent portfolios to ever come on the market," George Riedel, Nortel's chief strategy officer, said in a statement.Google argued that the bid would help protect it from patent litigation and foster innovation.The technology industry has recently seen an explosion in patent litigation, often involving low-quality software patents, which threatens to stifle innovation, Kent Walker, Google's general counsel, said in a blog post, believing the best defense against such litigation is to have a "formidable patent portfolio. SAN FRANCISCO, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Microsoft on Monday sued Barnes & Noble, claiming patent infringement by the largest book retailer in the United States.Microsoft said it filed legal actions on Monday in both the U.S. International Trade Commission and the U.S. District Court of the Western District of Washington against Barnes & Noble, as well as Foxconn and Inventec, two manufacturers of Barnes & Noble's devices.According to Microsoft, the actions focus on the patent infringement by Barnes & Noble's Nook e-reader and tablet, both of which run Google's Android operating system.The patents at issue cover a range of functionality embodied in Android devices that are essential to the user experience, including natural ways of interacting with devices by tabbing through various screens to find the information they need, surfing the Web more quickly and interacting with documents and e-books, Microsoft said in a press release."The Android platform infringes a number of Microsoft's patents, and companies manufacturing and shipping Android devices must respect our intellectual property rights," Horacio Gutierrez, Microsoft's corporate vice president and deputy general counsel, was quoted by the press release as saying.Writing in a separate company blog post, Gutierrez said that the latest actions bring to 25 the total number of Microsoft patents in litigation for infringement by Android smartphones, tablets and other devices.He noted that Microsoft has established a licensing program to address Android's ongoing infringement, and leading Android smartphone manufacturer HTC has taken a license under this program.Amazon.com also signed a patent license with Microsoft last year covering its Kindle e-reader, he added."Unfortunately, after more than a year of discussions, Barnes & Noble, Foxconn and Inventec have so far been unwilling to sign a license, and therefore, we have no other choice but to bring legal action to defend our innovations," Gutierrez said in the blog post.

SAN FRANCISCO, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Amazon.com Inc. on Tuesday announced the launch of an on-line music storage service,which enables users to store digital music in the cloud and access it from computers and devices running Google's Android operating system.The new service, called "Cloud Drive," offered customers five gigabytes of free storage on Amazon Web servers for all kinds of digital files, including music, photos, videos and documents. For paid plans, users can purchase storage space starting at 20 U.S. dollars a year for 20 gigabytes.The on-line retailer also launched "Cloud Player for Web" and " Cloud Player for Android." The former allows users to get the media files they stored on Amazon's servers from a Web browser on a Mac or PC. The latter lets users play music they have uploaded on Cloud Drive, computers or a smartphone that runs Android operating system.Analysts said Amazon is stepping up its rivalries with Apple and Google.
