BEIJING, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police will begin a special four-month campaign to crack down on the production and use of counterfeit automobile license plates on Thursday.Police around the country will target trade in fake license plates, registration papers and other license plate-related crime, the Ministry of Public Security said Wednesday in a statement on its website.Violators sometimes forge license plates for military and government vehicles to enjoy privileges like free expressway charges.Some drivers use stickers to cover their license plates to cheat police.The campaign will begin June 10 and finish Oct. 10.Police carried out similar campaigns during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the National Day holidays in 2009 to create better traffic conditions.Statistics with the ministry show police nationwide seized about 267,000 counterfeit license plates in the 2008 campaign and 183,000 fake plates in the 2009 campaign.

CHANGSHA, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Ten people have been confirmed dead after two manganese mines in central China's Hunan Province were flooded two weeks ago, local authorities said Monday.Water gushed into the two mine pits run by Leixin Mining Development Co. and Wenhua Manganese Co. in Huayuan County of Xiangxi Tujia-Miao Autonomous Prefecture at about 6:10 p.m. on July 20, trapping a total of 13 miners underground.Rescuers pulled three miners alive out of the mines on July 29 and sent them to hospital. Currently, they are in stable condition, a spokesman with the Hunan Provincial Work Safety Administration said Monday.Rescuers had earlier retrieved seven bodies, and they found the last three bodies on Sunday morning, the spokesman said.Local authorities are further investigating the cause of the accident, he added.

TOKYO, July 23 (Xinhua) -- New Japanese Ambassador to China Uichiro Niwa on Friday called for deepening of Sino-Japanese mutually beneficial strategic relations."In recent years the leaders of the two countries have created a conducive environment for the development of bilateral ties. I am very glad to see that," Niwa told Chinese press in Tokyo.Upon his assignment to China, the Japanese ambassador said China and Japan, as close neighbors, should deal with each other for the upcoming 1,000 or 2,000 years rather than 10 or 20 years. In the long run, both countries share a lot of common interests, and a stable, friendly relationship is the ultimate goal.The former president of Itochu Corp. said that he aimed to boost communication, strengthen economic cooperation, and build on the mutual trust between the leaders of the two countries.Niwa also said in the age of multipolarization, no one can conduct diplomacy with knowledge of China alone.
