SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It’s an online service that brings groceries right to your doorstep, but some who work for Instacart told Team 10 they are being treated unfairly.Instacart entered the San Diego market in 2016. It basically works like Uber, where people can sign up to be “shoppers” and fill orders for a fee.Jacquelyn Westby signed up for Instacart to make extra cash.“We shop for groceries and then deliver using our own vehicles, our own gas,” Westby said. She recently graduated from grad school and is looking for a job in the field of occupational therapy. Instacart helped keep her afloat as she dealt with growing bills.“This job was the difference between homeless and not. Being able to eat and not,” Westby said.Westby said Instacart changed its pay structure over the past couple months. A company spokesperson said changes were meant to improve the shopper experience, adding things like “pay per mile” and estimated earnings. Last year, we heard that the Girls Empowerment Camp was a priceless experience for the campers. We want the same for our 2018 participants.”The Girls Empowerment Camp is a free two-day camp for youth ages 14-18 “regardless of age or gender.”The camp introduces participants to career opportunities in firefighting and encourages them to consider public safety as a career option.“We made a commitment to hundreds of kids and their families and we are going to stand by that,” Mayor Faulconer said. “This is an important camp that teaches kids what it’s like to be a firefighter and exposes many of them to a career opportunity they may not have considered previously. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Many drivers around San Diego say they’re worried about being cited after seeing what some people call “smog checkpoints.”Motorists recently came across one of the mobile smog checks on Nimitz in Point Loma. A roadside team was inspecting cars to gather data in hopes of improving air quality.The mobile unit is set up to look like a DUI checkpoint, but stopping is voluntary. "I look ahead, and I see lights. It's obviously police action, and I'm thinking maybe there's a car accident,” said Nanci Washburn.Washburn said the activity created traffic backup, making her late for a meeting. "Here is a CHP car. Two officers, there's a whole blue tented area here with chairs. Once I got past that, here is a lift to put a car on."Washburn says the first thought that went through her head was that authorities were targeting older vehicles due to emission problems.10News spoke to the California Highway Patrol and the agency behind the smog checks, the Bureau of Automotive Repair. Those agencies say it’s not a checkpoint and no one is being impounded, rather, it’s a voluntary survey to help the state meet air quality standards.The agencies involved claim drivers aren’t penalized for not participating. "There's no fines and no penalties if they pass or fail, it's just informational. And we use this information to help us manage and evaluate the California Smog Check Program,” said Michael Lafferty.Essentially, the state is policing their program, officials claim.
