SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As part of its weeklong Spooky Spokes Week, the San Diego County Bike Coalition will host a series of Halloween-themed events Thursday throughout the city.From 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 2 to 5:30 p.m., bike enthusiasts can arrive at the Pacific Beach Library at 4275 Cass St. location for the "Halloween Spoketacular" event featuring bike maps, spooky backgrounds for photos and children's trick-or-treat bags.The weeklong Spooky Spokes event encourages cyclists to ride all week long and to learn about bike safety, biking as a solution to climate change and bike-friendly routes in the community during multiple special events.According to the San Diego Association of Governments, San Diego County has seen a 42% increase in bike trips during the pandemic. With more riders on the road and with daylight hours shortening, the bike coalition said it recognizes the importance of bike safety education in the community."Even though riders still need to take safety precautions, including physical distancing, everyone can still get out and ride in the community," a coalition statement said.During Spooky Spokes Week, running through Sunday, San Diego bike riders will get the opportunity to win prizes by riding and participating in events like the Spooky Spokes Trivia night and the costume contest.At 4 p.m., the San Diego County Bike Coalition is partnering with the California Office of Traffic Safety to invite all bike commuters in costume to receive free front bike lights at the San Diego Central Library, 330 Park Blvd. All riders on bikes can head to the San Diego Central Library where coalition staff will encourage safe, nighttime commuting with free bike light installation, tips and important safety information about riding in the dark.The annual bike light giveaway aims to increase the visibility of riders on city streets. This year, LightMeUp Safety Lights will be available for purchase, as will wheel lights. The first 10 people in costume to arrive will get one free wheel light. Suja Juice will also be offering cold-pressed juices to those in attendance.Finally, at 6:30 p.m., the coalition will host a panelist webinar about "Biking as a Solution to the Climate Crisis." SAN DIEGO (CNS) - At least one person was seriously injured this morning in a crash that may have involved an alcohol-impaired driver, the California Highway Patrol said.A car reportedly rolled over and caught fire about 3:44 a.m. on southbound state Route 15 near state Route 94, according to a California Highway Patrol incident log. Moments later, dispatchers were told the car appeared to have exploded.The fire-damaged car was then struck by another car, according to the incident log. A third vehicle was also involved in the crash, though details were scant.At least one person was left with serious injuries. The CHP described the incident as related to drunk driving, but it wasn't clear if anyone was taken into custody.  744

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A parolee who allegedly stabbed a pair of transients -- one fatally -- in two separate Midway District attacks on Thanksgiving Day was charged Friday with murder, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. Forrest Robert Brantley, 38, of Ventura County, is accused of fatally stabbing 55-year-old Robert Erbe in the neck at about 8 a.m. Nov. 28 outside a business in the 3100 block of Sports Arena Boulevard, according to San Diego police.Brantley is also accused of stabbing another man three times in the back and arm on Sports Arena Boulevard about six hours prior to Erbe's slaying, according to Deputy District Attorney Will Hopkins.The prosecutor said that after stabbing the first victim around 2 a.m., Brantley returned to the area and approached Erbe and an unidentified second transient outside a 7-Eleven store.RELATED: Police identify man in deadly Thanksgiving Day Midway District stabbingHopkins said he offered Erbe drugs in a bag and then stabbed the victim while Erbe was looking through the bag.According to the prosecutor, Erbe asked Brantley why he stabbed him and Brantley responded, ``This is war,'' then stood over the victim and watched him bleed out.In the days following the stabbings, San Diego police circulated photographs of the defendant, which included images captured from surveillance footage on the San Diego trolley.Brantley was arrested in Ventura on Dec. 4 while walking near the intersection of the 101 Freeway and state Route 33, where officers recognized him from fugitive-suspect alerts, according to police in the coastal city north of Los Angeles.According to the prosecutor, Brantley posted on social media days prior to the stabbings that he was going to ``help the homeless,'' though his true intention was to target homeless victims.RELATED: Midway District murder suspect arrested in VenturaWhile the prosecution asked for no bail, San Diego County Superior Court Judge Jay Bloom set bail at million due to the ``totally senseless'' nature of the attacks on ``vulnerable victims,'' as well as the flight risk he believed Brantley represented. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was killed Saturday when an SUV overturned and crashed into a tree on the Sea World Drive on-ramp to northbound Interstate 5, the California Highway Patrol said.The accident happened about 9 a.m. when a white Cadillac Escalade luxury SUV, traveling at a high rate of speed according to one witness, overturned and hit a tree on the right shoulder of the Sea World Drive on-ramp, according to CHP Officer Salvador Castro.Units from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department were also on the scene, near the Tecolote Canyon Natural Park and Nature Center.The CHP had no immediate information on the identity of the victim. Castro said nobody else was in the SUV at the time of the crash.Traffic on Sea World Drive and northbound I-5 was reported to be slowing. The CHP will investigate the cause of the accident. 837

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - City officials are asking the San Diego Superior Court to review two competing development plans for the city's SDCCU Stadium site in Mission Valley.Both the SoccerCity and SDSU West proposals have garnered enough signatures of support to qualify for the November ballot.
