SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A recent SurveyUSA/10News poll shows 53% of San Diegans are worried about the cost of food, and that gets especially troublesome in the summer, when kids are out of school. Many families lose much needed support from free or reduced price meals at school. But a program through Feeding San Diego is working to make sure every kid has the "Fuel for Summer" they need."It's both heartwarming and heartbreaking," says Feeding San Diego CEO Vince Hall. "That summer meal we're able to provide is probably the first meal that they've had of the day."1 in 6 children in San Diego faces hunger and food insecurity. The Fuel for Summer program provides meals that follow all federal nutritional guidelines. They include a protein, side, vegetable, fruit and healthy drink. Often, Hall says, they're introducing kids to foods they don't get on a regular basis."I went to one of the meals last summer," says Hall with a smile. "There were kids who'd never had a tamale, and had to be instructed on how to eat a tamale, and then they thought they were absolutely delicious."The Fuel for Summer program has 16 sites, some feed as many as 200 kids every day. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Navy sailor is under investigation in connection with the fire that caused extensive damage to the USS Bonhomme Richard at Naval Base San Diego, sources told ABC 10News.Multiple sources with close ties to Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) told ABC 10News that investigators determined the July 12 fire may have been set intentionally. Investigators identified a sailor as an arson suspect in their probe, sources said.The sources added multiple search warrants were executed at the sailor’s home and property. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was hospitalized after being shot as he sat in his car at a Southcrest park, San Diego police said.The incident happened just before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 4100 block of Newton Avenue, according to police.The 26-year-old victim and a 19-year-old man were sitting in a BMW when two men walked up to the car. Police said the two men pounded on the car’s windows before they opened fire.The victim was shot in the left thigh and left wrist, police said. The 19-year-old was not hurt.The victim drove the bullet-riddled BMW away from the park and called 911 to report the shooting. Police made contact with the BMW on National Avenue and the victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.According to police, the suspected shooters are believed to have fled the park in a white pickup truck. Twelve shell casings were recovered at the scene, police added.Descriptions of the two suspected shooters were not immediately available. 984

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man is in custody after a chase ended in a standoff with police at a Mission Bay Motel Sunday morning. Police say the chase started just before 9 a.m. at the A-1 Storage on Garnett Avenue after officers received a citizens' tip. The suspect driving a U-Haul truck led police on a short chase to the 4300 block of Mission Bay Drive near Roadway in San Diego.According to police, the man is wanted on felony weapons charges. After the chase ended, a woman in the passenger seat was detained while the driver ran into the nearby motel. The woman was later released. While searching for the suspect throughout the motel, officers learned that the man broke through several walls to try and escape. “This guy starts forcing himself into apartments, and now we have to deal with a possible hostage situation. That’s the reason why we brought so many resources down here. We wanted to get this guy into custody as fast as we can," Lt. Christian Sharp with the San Diego Police Department said. Eventually, police had to use chemical gas and a K-9 to apprehend the suspect, who has yet to be identified.  1166

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A judge decided Wednesday not to order a second trial for the man accused in the disappearance and murder of his stepson.Tieray Jones cried after the decision was made in the downtown courthouse.Jones was charged with killing 2-year-old Jahi Turner. Jahi was last seen at a park near Balboa Park in April 2002. Jones reported the boy missing, telling police Jahi wandered off.A mistrial was declared in for Jones on March 16.Jones was facing several charges including second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. Two jurors found Jones guilty of murder while 10 did not. 10 jurors found Jones guilty of involuntary manslaughter and two did not.During the trial, the judge asked if jurors would be able to reach a verdict if given more time to deliberate. After Jahi disappeared, a countywide search followed. Thousands of people looked for the boy in the park and Golden Hill neighborhood.
