Even on a cold Minnesota day, teacher Eric Wulff sees the importance of learning outside.“It is the world’s largest classroom,” he said. These students at the School of Engineering and Arts near Minneapolis are learning lessons like predator versus prey, measuring trees based on shadows, and taking care of chickens. These lessons translate to science and math, but without desks and four walls.“I think I learn better outside honestly, because as I’m learning, I’m refreshing my brain too,” one of the students said. Students still spend time inside learning hands-on skills that can be used outside the classroom, in nature, another day. One group of students at the school is raising trout that will eventually be released back into the stream.“Nine hours a day on their screens, and only 30 minutes a week outdoors doing unstructured play time so that’s a big change in the last few decades,” Jeff Ledermann with Fish and Wildlife Outreach at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said. Ledermann is one of the people in charge of the “No Child Left Inside” grant program, Minnesota’s newest program to help kids get outside more often.Lawmakers approved the program in 2019 as a way for schools and organizations to apply for funding for outdoor activities. Over million worth. The first round of small grants was awarded this winter, and the Department of Natural Resources recently closed the application process for a second round of larger grants to be awarded this spring.“We got the idea from other states that started the No Child Left Inside type of grant program; ours is unique,” Minnesota State Representative Jamie Becker-Finn said. She played a large role in the bill coming to life in Minnesota. “Some of the individual programs that have gotten funds through this program are really life changing things that we’re doing for young people,” she said.“Out of 400 applicants, they chose 60 so there were a lot of people looking for money or wanting to get kids outside,” Vincent Patton, a teacher at South High School near Downtown Minneapolis, said. Patton teaches “All Nations”, a class focused on the culture and history of Native Americans.“I get to tie those cultural activities in with the curriculum so my students can have experiences they might not have ever had,” he said. On days like today, Vince’s class is learning how to cook buffalo meat and preparing fishing rods for an outdoor fishing trip. Vince’s dad is helping out.“He’s taught me everything I know about fishing and being outdoors,” Vince said.South High students have done everything from going on day trips fishing, to longer trips, camping up in Northern Minnesota.Washington and Minnesota are the only states that have this grant program statewide from what we found, but other states like Hawaii are looking to pass something similar. Teachers like Vince are just happy to have the extra change.“I’m focused on trying to get paper and poster boards but I know that there’s pots of money that will give my students something deeper than just another worksheet,” Vince said.“The feedback we’ve had from the public has just been phenomenal. Clearly there is a demand for programs like this,” Jamie Becker-Finn said. 3228

EVERGREEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Police say a man from Evergreen Township, Michigan, was building a gun when he accidentally shot himself in the abdomen Monday. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. on January 7.According to Sgt. Shelly Park of the Sanilac County Sheriff's Office, the 18-year-old was building a .22 caliber gun when he accidentally made the makeshift firearm go off, striking himself in the abdomen. There were two other people near the man when the incident happened, and they contacted 911.Deputies say the 18-year-old stated that he had forgotten there was a bullet in the gun when he started working on it. The man was treated on the scene and transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. The incident has been determined to be an accident. The name of the 18-year-old is being held pending further investigation. 858

Diaper maker Pampers recently announced an initiative to install 5,000 changing tables in hopes of making changing tables more accessible for dads. The lack of public changing tables in men's rooms became a national issue last year when Donte Palmer of Florida posted a video online that went viral showing him squatting while trying to change his child's diaper. Pampers said Palmer is involved in its project.According to a study cited by Pampers, 9 out of 10 dads have gone into a public restroom and not been able to change their child's diapers. Pampers' goal is to have the 5,000 changing tables installed throughout North America by 2021. Pampers said in a statement that it is working with Koala Kare to identify 5,000 high-need locales for changing tables. Pampers said it will be targeting places such as parks and recreation centers, community centers and libraries. Pampers said it has already identified 500 locations, and those locations will have their changing tables installed in the coming weeks. “We know that dads want to be able to bond with their children by taking them out and about, and that means the inevitable diaper-duty no matter where they are. In many instances today, instead of it being an easy, straightforward task it’s a moment that causes angst because the facilities needed are not always available,” said Andre Schulten, Vice President and General Manager Baby Care North America, Procter & Gamble. “We are proud to announce our commitment to provide 5,000 changing tables for installation in public restrooms by 2021 to help address the inequality hands-on dads face when it comes to taking care of their babies.” 1669

Dick's Sporting Goods considered stopping all gun sales in early 2018. A shooting at the high school in Parkland, Florida, had killed 17 people. And the company was shocked into action."We did have a conversation about that," CEO Ed Stack told CNN Business earlier this year. "At the time we felt it was a part of our DNA and we should stay in it. So many people in the country are law-abiding citizens who use firearms to hunt, to use from a recreation standpoint. We didn't think it was right to exit the business completely."That could be changing. Dick's, one of the country's biggest gun retailers, has been quietly testing the water on whether to pull out entirely from what it calls the "hunt" business, including firearms. An announcement with the results of the test is expected Thursday, when it is set to report quarterly results.America is again debating gun control after a recent wave of shootings — including one on August 3 at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas. The debate has drawn new scrutiny on the legal sale of guns. When Walmart reported earnings on August 15, CEO Doug McMillon said the company supports stronger gun measures, though he stopped short of endorsing a specific plan. But Dick's has been the mainstream retailer to so far make the loudest public statement about firearm sales. Two weeks after the Parkland shooting on February 14, 2018, Dick's decided to drop the sale of assault-style rifles that are frequently used in mass shootings, as well as high-capacity magazines that can allow a person to fire more bullets without taking time to reload. It also raised the age for the sale of any firearm to 21 from 18.Rather than sell off its inventory of assault rifles to another retailer, Dick's had the weapons destroyed. And it hired lobbyists to work on gun safety and gun control issues. The moves won praise from gun control opponents and anger from gun enthusiasts. The backlash has probably hurt the sale of rifles Dick's continued to sell. As a test, Dick's last fall stopped selling all hunting gear, including guns, in 10 stores. It replaced the guns with other goods, such as apparel of a local sports team and other popular items. The experiment was a success. "Those stores outperformed the balance of the chain pretty meaningfully," Stack said.Earlier this year, the company pulled the hunting business out of another 125 stores, leaving sales in about 600 stores. The company said it would study the impact on overall store sales at those 125 stores and complete its review by August. The company declined to comment on the status of that review ahead of Thursday's earnings announcement.Firearm sales have generally been on the decline in recent years.American Outdoor Brands, the largest gun manufacturer and maker of Smith & Wesson, reported that sales fell 33% in the year that ended in April 2018, compared to the previous year, before rising 5% in the most recent year. Sturm Ruger & Co. reported a 21% drop in sales in 2017, and another 5% drop last year. Other smaller gunmakers have also reported declines. Remington filed for bankruptcy in April 2018.During the administration of President Barack Obama, the fear that the government would crack down on gun sales stoked sales. But under President Donald Trump, who was elected with the support of the National Rifle Association, those fears have abated — and along with them gun sales have waned. FBI background checks used for gun purchases, a measure of sales, were down 5% last year compared to 2016, the last year of the Obama administration."It's an OK business," Stack told CNN Business earlier this year. "It's not a great business." 3666
