SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Saturday marked the first weekend San Diego County restaurants were under indoor dining restrictions and they've gotten creative to stay afloat during the pandemic.Monday the Governor announced San Diego County joined the state's watch list due to the spike in coronavirus cases.The county announced bars, restaurants, wineries, movie theaters, zoos, museums, and cardrooms will need to shutter indoor operations Monday night at midnight.Saturday on Harbor Island, Coasterra debuted a "pop up" dining experience on their 'float' that normally hosts events.Executive Chef and Partner in the Cohn Restaurant Group, Deborah Scott thought their event space on the water (dubbed The Float) was a perfect place for extra seating. Their sister restaurant Island Prime had to close it's doors, due to the new restrictions.So the Island Prime, moved to an island.On the 'float' they can seat up to 68 people, that's 68 plates that Island Prime can now sell at a time. Scott said they were booked Saturday, their first official night, but are not filling it to capacity.She said they want to make sure things run smoothly."My biggest fear is that everyone is going to come out here and have dinner and go, 'Can you just move Island Prime out here?'" She said chuckling. The same sentiment was shared in Escondido where they kicked off the first weekend of street-side dining.One lane in both directions down Grand Avenue is shut down between Maple and Juniper Streets to make way for the extra tables, chairs and umbrellas.A huge opportunity for indoor venues like The Grand Tea Room.Owner of The Grand Tea Room Lousia Magoo said inside she can seat about 50 people, "so bringing more out here, I could probably seat 30 people at a time so it really means everything to us."Magoo also sits on the Downtown Business Association Board and said they've dedicated ,000 in supplies for the restaurants to help with creating their outdoor dining space.Saturday she said they handed out 50 umbrellas and are expecting more tables and chairs Monday, providing San Diegans a dose of normalcy both on the water and curbside. 2134
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — State officials hope California’s new 10 p.m. stay-at-home order will slow the spread of COVID-19, otherwise, another 10,000 San Diegans are projected to contract the virus in the next 10 days.That’s according to a new county-by-county forecast from Facebook, which rolled out the prediction software last month.Facebook projects L.A. County will see the second-largest increase in cases in the country by November 30. San Diego County is projected to add the 15th most cases, reaching a total of 78,594 infections by Nov. 30.The two-week forecast was released before Governor Gavin Newsom announced enhanced restrictions. Facebook will release a new two-week forecast next week.“Many other forecasts around the world are only predicting caseload at a country or state level,” said Laura McGorman with Facebook’s Data for Good team. “We’re trying to be much more local in this approach because we know so much of the COVID-19 response is in fact local.”McGorman said the forecast tool could help county and state officials plan hospital bed space, ICU capacity, ventilators and other critical supplies.The map is powered by artificial intelligence that draws on seven kinds of data. They use outside metrics like confirmed cases, doctor visits and the weather combined with information Facebook collects like a survey of people’s symptoms and GPS location data.The location data helps gauge whether people are staying home and isolating or circulating among the community, according to McGorman.Facebook only pulls data from users who opt in and no, they’re not reading your posts. All of the information, which is aggregated to the county or state level to protect privacy, is available for the public to download.The tech giant initially started Data for Good three years ago to help with disaster-relief projects, McGorman said. Among other applications, their location data can quickly predict if evacuations are working.“Typically, groups like the Red Cross have to knock door-to-door to see if people are still home, or wait for people to show up at shelters to see if they’ve gotten out of harm’s way,” she said.The software has also been used to detect network outages when a hurricane knocks out cellphone towers, she said.Facebook’s COVID-19 mapping tools have been used to inform policymakers in New York and Mexico, and the data has helped analyze the effectiveness of stay-at-home orders in California, McGorman said. 2457
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Santas are taking a big hit in 2020 for two big reasons: the pandemic and politics.During a typical December, Santas in San Diego would pop up at events, fundraisers, malls, parties and more. FORBS is the Fraternal Order of Real Bearded Santas, and the group meets and trains year-round to prepare the best Santas for the holiday season. This year, even these pros can’t find work.There are two big reasons for this. The first is one that is impacting most industries right now: the pandemic. Events and parties are canceled, and malls are hurting. At a mall, Santa usually would go through a line of kids, put them on his lap, and ask them what they want for Christmas this year. Now, if Santa is able to meet and greet, face masks and Plexiglas stand in between Saint Nick and the children.RELATED: Out-of-state mall Santas? AB 5 was publicized as a bill that would help independent contractors like rideshare drivers, but it also impacts mall Santas. Under Assembly Bill 5, authored by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego) and passed this year, those workers are reclassified as employees with insurance and other benefits.FORBS members fear companies won’t want to hire Santas as employees.“What’s that mean? It just means Santa is an employee instead of an independent contractor. Santas will be getting a paycheck with holdings taken out of it,” said one Santa.This means Santas who train year-round for this month have to adapt. Some are turning to virtual meet and greets to make ends meet.“Virtual is definitely for me the savior of the year,” said a Santa who recently got booked up with back-to-back virtual greetings. He said he usually makes about ,000 per holiday season, but will be lucky to break ,000 this year, even with the uptick in virtual bookings.Another Santa said he usually works at a mall, but that gig was canceled this year so he’s working as much as he can at Seaport Village, which does have in-person Santa photo opportunities. He said he usually makes around ,000 per season, but will be happy if he breaks ,000 this year. Despite the pay drop, both Santas say they’re thankful to be able to spread a little bit of Christmas joy, and look forward to 2021 when hopefully at least one of their issues will be resolved."Things could be worse. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Seaport Village is seeing a bounce back in foot traffic now that the most stringent of coronavirus-related restrictions have eased.Port of San Diego officials say in the last month, 39,661 people came to the coastal shopping mall. That's more than double the 16,606 people that came through the center in the month after the shutdown order took effect March 13. The port took over management of Seaport Village about two years ago and invested more than million to spruce it up, create more in-person events, and add new tenants. The idea was to reverse the decline in the village, which had seen numerous closures. Ultimately, the port plans to redevelop the property with a hotel, office space, an aquarium, and a spire. "We're really just doing our best to set it up for the future, for us this is the perfect opportunity with all of the interest that we've gotten," said Lucy Contreras, a program manager in the Port's real estate division.In the last year, the Port has signed leases with Geppetto's, Spill the Beans Coffee, Mr. Moto Pizza House, Sam the Cooking Guy for a restaurant, and a Mike Hess Brewing tasting room combined with City Tacos. The duo already has a location in Imperial Beach and will take over a former restaurant spot on the center's western edge overlooking the bay. "Ever since then, and that's been like three and a half years, you tell people we're doing beer and tacos on the beach, beer and tacos on the water, nobody thinks that's a bad idea," Hess said. On Friday, the port signed a lease with the Malibu Farm restaurant for a Seaport Village location.The mall, which canceled many in-person events during the shutdown, started once again offering live music two weeks ago. It also has balcony concerts every Thursday and Saturday. While the foot traffic has increased, it is still down from pre-COVID-19 levels. From February to March 2020, the month before the pandemic hit, the port says 56,516 people came to Seaport Village. The full redevelopment is still at least five years away. 2055
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Several US Navy Sailors put on their uniforms on their days off to help deliver meals to San Diego-area military veterans. Meals on Wheels President Debbie Case said they deliver 500,000 meals every year and about 42 percent of those meals go to veterans.“To see the active duty and the respect that they have for these veterans is incredible,” said Case.Meals on Wheels makes 1,400 deliveries every day. That means more than 500 are for veterans.Case added they also started delivering to disabled veterans no matter how old they are or when they ended their service. 610
