SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - The San Diego Public Library is on the road to reopening. Tuesday, eleven locations have reopened, but only for people who placed holds prior to the closure that started in March. Those items can now be picked up with a contact-free system where the person calls when they arrive at the location, then a librarian puts the books on a table outside for the person to pick up. Starting next week, people can put new holds on items. Director Misty Jones said they’ll reopen more after that depending on county orders and plans to keep books virus-free. The future of the libraries will depend on some unknown’s, including how the library can help the school system, what studies reveal about how long the virus can live on items and more. “We adapt to the way that people need the service from us and we’ll adapt and we’ll pivot and we’ll be able to offer that incredible customer service like we always have,” said Jones. The eleven locations currently open as of May 26 are Carmel Valley, College-Rolando, La Jolla/Riford, Logan Heights, Mira Mesa, Mission Hills-Hillcrest/Knox, Mission Valley, Point Loma/Hervey, Rancho Bernardo, San Ysidro and Valencia Park/Malcolm X. These locations are open 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Bridging the gap between the community and the police department, the Fairmount Park Neighborhood Association threw a party for the men and women who patrol their streets every day. Daniel Palmer and Russ Connelly reminisced the good old days when the original owners from the 1950s took good care of the then-new Fairmount Park community. "Being in the area that is in the center of everything, it's very desirable," said Connelly, president of the Fairmount Park Neighborhood Association. But as the years went on and the homes changed hands, so did the vibe of the neighborhood."The streets were dirty and the houses were getting more dilapidated," Palmer said. Palmer said there were numerous reports of drugs, break-ins, and speeding problems along Parrot Street."We have a straight part of a downhill side of the street called the 'Parrot Way speedway,'" Connelly said. "A person was hit and run just a couple of hundred yards from my house," Palmer said. But the moment they shared their concerns with patrol officers, they said something changed. Instead of merely ticketing offenders, they said the officers took the time to engage with the community."I think that's had an effect on a lot of the neighbors because they suddenly seem to slow down, watch for traffic, watch what's going on," Connelly said. "You see people putting a coat of paint on their house. You see people picking up their yards. People are happier. They feel more secure," Palmer said. So as a token of their appreciation and hard work, the Fairmount Park Neighborhood Association threw a party for the Mid-City police officers and elected officials who make their area safe. Thank you, they said, for making Fairmount Park the desirable, sweet community it once was. "It's more of a family environment than it was five to six years ago. In all honesty, it's a lot cleaner. People are more friendly. There's more participation, more interaction. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — After successive years of devastating wildfires, California's fire agency announced a plan Tuesday that would dramatically increase logging and other forest management efforts with the help of the National Guard.The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection released a list of 35 priority fuel-reduction projects it wants to start immediately across the state over roughly 90,000 acres. That's double the acreage the agency aimed to cover in the current fiscal year, CalFire Deputy Chief Scott McLean said.The agency is also seeking National Guard assistance to coordinate the work. They include work around the city of Redding, which was also devastated by wildfire last year, and in Butte County, where Paradise is located.An estimated 15 million acres of forest land in California are in need of thinning or other restoration work, so the 35 projects are just a start, Calfire officials said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Drugs and graffiti were just some of the problems filling parks around San Diego, with most of the activity happening during the night hours. A curfew has now been put in place for several parks.Community members and city leaders threw a party Friday morning to celebrate the change. Residents have been rallying for a curfew at City Heights Square Mini Park, which sits in the middle of an assisted living facility for seniors. Neighbors say before the curfew, they observed everything from gangs and drugs at the park. “We are this beautiful community,” says Delia Contreras. “We have kids, we have a lot of good things, but the drugs are no good.”Since the beginning of the year, 217 crimes have been reported within a 1,500 feet radius of the park. The crimes include assault, theft, and vandalism. “To me, San Diego is a paradise, and we need to clean up the whole town,” says Ronald Tieken. City Heights Square Mini Park will now have a nightly curfew from 9 pm to 5 am. There were other parks around the city with the same problems. Cedar Ridge Mini Park, Montclair Neighborhood Park, North Park Community Park and North Park Mini Park. These parks will now have a curfew of midnight to 6 a.m. “It took a lot of time because we didn’t want to take just one site, so we opened it up for other sites to bring their concerns in, and five parks were identified to go forward with it,” says Raul Contreras, with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.
