SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego International Airport is reporting an increase in travelers as coronavirus restrictions continue to lift.New numbers from the San Diego Airport Authority showed that from June 18 to 21, an average of 8,679 daily travelers went through the TSA Checkpoint. That's a drop off of 80 percent from the same time last year. However, during the height of the coronavirus restrictions in April, the drop off was as much as 95 percent compared to the same time in 2019. "From what we are seeing and based on our conversations with airlines, leisure travel is coming back faster than business travel, and this is consistent with nationwide trends and reports," said Airport Authority spokeswoman Sabrina LoPiccolo. LoPiccolo says the airport has taken numerous steps to help stop the spread of COVID-19, including plexiglass sneeze guards in some areas, increased cleaning and floor markers to encourage social distancing. The large drop off in travel has taken a toll on businesses that depend on travelers to survive.Across the runway at Park, Shuttle, and Fly, owner Al Cruz says the lack of air travel forced his family to temporarily lay off the lots 15 workers."We were very scared," Cruz said. "We moved real quick, we have to survive. We're family-owned and we're not a big corporation. We don't have a lot of money to sustain us.During the height of the shutdown, Cruz rented hundreds of spots to a rental car company to store excess cars, but it was a revenue cut. In June, he received a Paycheck Protection Program loan and reopened, hiring back the 15 workers. There are now about 45 cars owned by travelers in the lot. Cruz said he needs the trend of increased flying to continue to make it. "If it does not, it flattens out like it was three months ago, we can't survive on that," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego police are searching for two suspects involved in a knife attack in Bay Terraces early Sunday morning that left a 30-year-old man hospitalized.The assault happened at around 4:25 a.m. in the 6900 block of Paradise Valley Road, said Ofc. Tony Martinez, San Diego Police Department The victim told police he was confronted by two men who asked him for a cigarette."An argument ensued, and during the argument, the victim was stabbed multiple times," Martinez said.Both suspects fled in a white sedan-type vehicle, according to Martinez.The victim suffered a stab wound to the neck, the left bicep and lacerations to his nose, jaw and back, Martinez said. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital. His condition is unknown at this time but Martinez said he is expected to survive.The two men were described as Hispanic between 20 and 30 years old. One of the suspects stands about 6- foot, 2-inches tall weighing 180 pounds with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a black baseball hat, a black jacket and blue jeans.The second suspect stands about 6-feet tall weighing 200 pounds with a heavy build. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police have identified the man shot and killed in Encanto Wednesday night as 24-year-old Gai Wal.Police were called to the 6100 block of Imperial Avenue just before 6 p.m. on December 23 after receiving reports of shots fired.When they arrived, officers found Wal in the parking lot of a nearby business with an apparent gunshot wound to his upper torso.RELATED: San Diego police: Man shot in Encanto neighborhoodWal was taken to the hospital in critical condition. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego city leaders met Monday to look for new ways to tackle homelessness. Several departments and organizations gave presentations to a committee, lead by Councilmember Chris Ward.The Select Committee on Homelessness met to discuss how to create new employment opportunities for homeless and how to get them into the existing rapid-rehousing programs. They also discussed a new program that would house all homeless services in one location.The San Diego Police Department provided an overview of their new Neighborhood Policing division. They say they are working to provide outreach, mental health services, and enforcement when needed.San Diego residents spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting, thanking the committee for their work but asking them to do more.Several other agencies also had presentations, providing updates on the temporary bridge shelters and the homeless storage facilities.The Select Committee on Homelessness meets one to two times a month. 1013

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Residents may be seeing Uber delivery drones in San Diego's skies as soon as this year.Uber Elevate, Uber's drone and air transportation leg, announced this week during the Forbes’ 30 under 30 Summit that the company will begin testing Uber Eats delivery drones in summer 2020. The company added, though, that delivery service using partner drone operators could come in the coming months.A rendering of the Uber Eats drone shows six-rotors will allow the drone to take off and land vertically, with the ability to rotate to provide more lift and speed. The drone is designed to carry a meal for two people.Uber Elevate says the drone is designed to travel a total of 18 miles or 12 miles round-trip. The company says the drone is equipped to cruise below 400 feet and comply with existing regulations to operate the aircraft.The company estimates the drone can perform a delivery in eight minutes, including time to load and unload.The company says the design has passed the design review phase and is expected to fly before the end of the year. 1073
