SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Testimony wrapped up Wednesday in the murder trial of two men accused in the stabbing death of a Chula Vista music producer whose body was found in a drum floating in San Diego Bay.Timothy John Cook, 54, is charged with the Sept. 30, 2017, murder of his housemate Omar Medina, 28. Co-defendant Derrick Spurgeon, 40, is charged with being an accessory for allegedly driving the boat used to dump the victim's body, which was found 12 days later inside the 55-gallon barrel, which had been weighed down by a makeshift anchor made of wire and cinderblocks.Medical examiners said Medina had been stabbed more than 60 times in the chest, back, neck and head.RELATED: Man whose body was found in a barrel had been stabbed 66 timesAttorneys will make closing arguments Monday morning at the downtown San Diego courthouse.Deputy District Attorney Cherie Somerville told jurors that Medina and Cook both worked at a scaffolding business for Cook's younger brother and were living together at a home in Chula Vista.In a text exchange with his brother, Cook expressed annoyance with Medina over his drinking and sloppy household behavior, leading Cook to eventually kick him out of the house, according to the prosecutor.RELATED: Opening statements made in murder trial involving body found in barrelSommerville also noted in her opening statement that Medina had recently come into a substantial amount of money via an ,000 settlement he received in a lawsuit.Medina's family never heard from him after Sept. 30, and filed a missing person's report soon afterward with Chula Vista police. Medina's unlocked car was found about a week later on Oaklawn Avenue, not far from the home he shared with Cook on McIntosh Street. Somerville alleged that a barrel matching the one containing Medina's body can be seen in the bed of the pickup in the footage.She also said a search of the McIntosh Street home yielded additional indications that Cook was covering up the murder, such as removal of his home's kitchen sink and stripping down Medina's room, which was located in an attached building on the property.Oien said Cook was merely fixing up the home, and that he had an agreement with his landlord to make occasional repairs in exchange for lower rent.Spurgeon's attorney, Roland Haddad, said there was no evidence that his client had any knowledge that he was assisting Cook in disposing a body, if Cook even committed the murder at all. The men exchanged phone calls on Oct. 11, but Haddad said there was no evidence regarding what discussions they had over the phone, nor what was said on the alleged boat ride when Medina's body was dumped into the water. 4095

"With today's groundbreaking we begin the work to expand SDSU's educational, research, and entrepreneurial missions. SDSU Mission Valley also addresses the realities of the past few months and the need for new streams of revenue to support higher education opportunities for all."As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the groundbreaking event was not open to the general public. Instead, in-person speakers and invited guests were limited to maintain compliance with public health guidelines.The project has been in the works legally since San Diego voters approved Measure G in November 2018, with centerpiece Aztec Stadium scheduled for completion in Fall 2022."We are building a stadium for Aztec football, international and professional soccer, concerts and any other event you can think of," said SDSU Athletic Director John David Wicker. "A world-class 35,000-capacity stadium designed to offer the amenities fans expect today. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors Wednesday heard a proposal to reduce light pollution in two rural communities.The proposed amendment to the county's Light Pollution Chapter ordinance would cover the Julian and Borrego Springs Community Planning Areas.Both would be considered "Zone C" to receive a Dark Sky Community designation, which is generally more restrictive, according to a presentation at Wednesday's board meeting.Along with unanimously approving the ordinance amendment on first reading, the board also found it to be exempt from the state's Environmental Quality Act, as it does not affect land use or density.It would also support Julian in becoming an International Dark Sky Community and update Borrego Springs' light pollution standards.The board will consider formal adoption at its Nov. 18 meeting. If approved, the amended ordinance would take effect in January.Zone C is generally more restrictive and limits total amount of light per acre and has more restrictive standards for signage or nighttime sports.Proposed changes would include new lighting standards (for color type, levels and shielding) and sign illumination. The county would give existing developments 10-year grace period to come into compliance.Dark skies are important to astronomers for better viewing in rural communities, along with businesses that benefit from related tourism. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Sales of previously owned single-family homes in San Diego County dropped 10.5 percent in July compared to June, according to data released Wednesday by the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors.Month-over-month single-family home sales fell from 2,221 in June to 1,989 in July. Condominium and townhome sales fell from 1,162 to 994, a 14.5 percent drop, according to the association.Single-family home sales and sales of condominiums and townhomes saw smaller decreases when compared to July 2017. The first installment of the 2018-2019 secured property tax bill was due on Nov. 1 and will become delinquent after Dec. 10. ``So far, we have had 41 percent of taxpayers send us .3 billion in first installment payments,'' McAllister said. ``But we're coming up on the deadline, and we don't want anyone to have to pay a 10 percent penalty for being even a minute late.'' Online payments will be accepted until midnight on Dec. 10. Taxpayers should log on to sdtcc.com early and give themselves plenty of time to complete an e-check payment before the automatic midnight cutoff, according to McAllister.
