Kentucky Speaker of the House Jeff Hoover resigned from his position Sunday amid sexual harassment allegations, saying he had made "mistakes."Hoover, who The Courier-Journal newspaper in Louisville reported had secretly settled a sexual harassment allegation by a woman on his legislative staff, did not resign as a state representative, however, and has denied all allegations."I did make mistakes, in that I engaged in inappropriate text messages," the Republican lawmaker said at a press conference announcing his decision. "I engaged in banter that was consensual, yet make no mistake, it was wrong on my part to do that. And for that I am truly sorry."The Courier-Journal was the first to report Hoover's settlement last week, citing sources with direct knowledge of the matter. The settlement involved three other Republican state representatives and Hoover's chief of staff, the newspaper reported.Hoover and his accuser, whom the Courier-Journal has not identified because she says she was sexually harassed, declined to comment, as did a lawyer for the woman, the newspaper said.Hoover asked for the public's forgiveness in a tearful statement on Sunday, saying, "To say that the past few weeks and days have been trying and difficult for me and my family would be an understatement."Kentucky's House speaker pro tempore, Republican David Osborne, said in a statement that he will be assuming operational control of the chamber as acting speaker.Hoover's resignation comes a day after Kentucky Gov. "I would simply say this: For the sake of themselves, for the sake of their families and for the sake of Kentucky, they should resign. Period. JUPITER, Fla. - Misdemeanor prostitution charges were dropped Thursday against New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and 24 other defendants linked to a spa sex sting in Jupiter.The charges stemmed from a police investigation at the Orchids of Asia Day Spa in Jupiter conducted in 2019.Jupiter police claimed Kraft visited the now-defunct spa twice in January 2019, including the morning of the AFC Championship game.Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg held a virtual news conference regarding the case.RELATED: How detectives gathered evidence inside Orchids of Asia day spa | Woman accused of performing sex act on Kraft arrestedThe investigation led to the arrests of several men and women, including misdemeanor charges against Kraft.Aronberg said charges were dropped against all 25 defendants accused of misdemeanor charges of soliciting prostitution."It is not a lack of will that caused us to drop the charges in the spa cases," Aronberg said.There are still pending felony charges against the owner and manager of the spa. "Despite the setback today, our office will continue our work to make our community safer by holding accountable those who engage in criminal activity including sex crimes." WPTV The Orchids of Asia Spa in Jupiter was raided in February 2019. The state attorney said he disagreed with the ruling that threw out the video evidence for all 25 defendants. "The Jupiter Police Department did the right thing in pursuing the investigation," Aronberg said. "I stand behind the decision to file the cases."Aronberg said four other individuals, besides Kraft, were recorded and received legitimate non-sexual massages. Two of those four were women, and the court said that the police should have never recorded the women, and thus every other video must be discarded. The state attorney said they could not prove human trafficking without a reasonable doubt, but there was evidence of human trafficking "in the overall investigation." KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police shot and killed a man who fired at officers outside a burning Kansas City home early Monday morning. Investigators said they later found a woman dead inside the house, after first discovering a dead woman outside, according to KCPD.A police spokesperson said several people were involved in a shooting around 2 a.m. In an update at 4:45 a.m., police said officers shot and killed an "active shooter" outside the home.“The suspect came out the house, fired shots at the officers who returned fire, stopping the suspect. The house started smoking. The fire department put out the fire and discovered another body,” explained Captain Lionel Colon with KCPD.Police said the house fire appeared to have been set intentionally but did not provide details on whether it was related to the shooting.It was not immediately clear how the victims died or what led up to the shooting. Police did not immediately identify anyone involved in the incident.A woman who identified herself as the aunt of the man police killed told 41 Action News her nephew killed her niece and the mother of his child. Even eight hours after the shooting, crime scene tape covered a block in each direction around an intersection, not far from the Truman Sports Complex. At one point, police had tape tied to Sarah Jones’s home. She said she got home late from work Sunday night and was still awake when gunshots erupted. She called police and a few minutes later heard another round of gunfire. “I got the kids, told them to get to the lowest point of the house. We were trying to get down to the basement just crawling across the floor. It was very scary,” Jones explained. She said police officers escorted her three children around the crime scene tape to the bus stop Monday morning.  1820

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City, Missouri Health Department is speaking out after it poured bleach on food intended to be given to homeless people.Nellie McCool, who helps run Free Hot Soup Kansas City, has been helping the homeless for years until Sunday."Officers and health inspectors demanded we destroy our food and we were violating health code violations by sharing meals with our friends," said McCool.The department said the group wasn't following the law about serving the homeless."They were notified back in a meeting in September that they needed to get a permit and they just outright said they refused to do that," said Dr. Rex Archer, director of health for KCMO.But McCool said she never heard from the department."That is incorrect," McCool said. "We never had any kind of government official ever come and speak with anybody at any of the public parks."According to the health department, the permit is free and all organizations that want to serve food to homeless people (or anyone) needs this permit. Archer said the food was also not being handled correctly and could put others at risk."Preparing food in all these individuals homes when people haven't been trained, prepare food safely. Then, they are taking it and transporting it in trunks of cars when its cool. It's supposed to be warm food but they have no insulation or a way to keep the food warm," Archer said. 1424

JACKSON, Miss. — Mississippi lawmakers are close to erasing the Confederate battle emblem from the 126-year-old state flag. The symbol is under criticism amid nationwide protests against racial injustice. The House and Senate voted Saturday to file a bill to remove the symbol that many see as racist. They could vote on that bill Sunday. A committee would design a new flag including the words “In God We Trust.” Voters would decide in November whether to endorse that design. Religious, education, sports and business leaders are pushing legislators to remove the Confederate symbol. Republican Gov. Tate Reeves said Saturday he will sign a bill to change the flag. 675
