NEW YORK, N.Y. – The results of a nationwide survey show a lack of basic Holocaust knowledge among Millennials and Generation Z.The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany released the results of its U.S. Millennial Holocaust Knowledge and Awareness Survey on Wednesday. The organization says it’s the first 50-state survey on Holocaust knowledge among Millennials and Gen Z, or people born between about 1981 and 2015.The national survey found that 63% of all respondents don’t know that around 6 million Jews were murdered and 36% thought that 2 million or fewer Jews were killed during the Holocaust.Additionally, the survey showed 48% of respondents can’t name one of the more than 40,000 concentration camps or ghettos in Europe during the Holocaust.One of the most surprising results showed that nearly 20% of Millennials and Gen Z in New York feel that Jews caused the Holocaust.The organization also says the survey showed 59% of respondents indicated they believe something like the Holocaust could happen again.“The results are both shocking and saddening and they underscore why we must act now while Holocaust survivors are still with us to voice their stories,” said Gideon Taylor, president of conference. “We need to understand why we aren’t doing better in educating a younger generation about the Holocaust and the lessons of the past. This needs to serve as a wake-up call to us all, and as a road map of where government officials need to act.”The survey revealed that Wisconsin scores highest in in Holocaust awareness among U.S. Millennials and Gen Z, followed by Minnesota, Massachusetts, Maine, Kansas, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Idaho, Iowa, and Montana.Arkansas has the lowest Holocaust score, according to the survey, with less than 17% of Millennials and Gen Z meeting the Holocaust knowledge criteria. The other states with the lowest scores include Alaska, Delaware, Maryland, New York, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Florida, and Mississippi. Surveyors calculated the scores by using the percentage of Millennials and Gen Z adults who met all three of the following criteria:1. Have “definitively heard about the Holocaust”2. Can name at least one concentration camp, death camp, or ghetto3. And know that 6 million Jews were killed in the HolocaustLastly, there was a consistent bright spot across the survey findings – a desire for Holocaust education. About 64% of respondents believe schools should be required to teach about the Holocaust and 80% believe it’s important to continue teaching it, so it doesn’t happen again.“We came to realize that, although a number of states already mandate Holocaust education which is an excellent first step,” said Claims Conference Holocaust task force leader Matthew Bronfman. “For the mandates to have a significant effect in classrooms there must be state funding to support the mandates. But even some of the nation's wealthiest cities are realizing their residents are not immune from economic impact of the pandemic.“This was there all along. We’ve been having a housing crisis forever. This is exposing how deep the cracks are,” Berman said.With help from the CARES Act, Newton was able to secure million in emergency housing funds. To spread the money out as best they could, the city decided to assist people in low-income housing with 70% of their rent. At least 170 families have been helped in the last two months.“You fight and fight to get ahead and something like this throws you back really far,” Berman added.Nationally, 20% of households missed their rent payments last month. NOANK, Ct. -- As a humid summer breeze blew across the bow of the oyster boat Marc Harrell was standing on, he looked out toward Long Island Sound and could see some signs that the nation’s economy is recovering.Harrell has spent most of his life fishing those waters for oysters under the guidance of Captain Jim Markow, both men are the backbone of Mystic Oysters, a family owned business that’s been around for decades.“Our business hasn’t completely rebounded yet, it’s still going to be some time before it does,” Harrell said as he dropped an oyster dredge off the side of the boat.In Noank, Connecticut, the headwaters of the Atlantic Ocean come crashing into the Mystic River. The combination of saltwater and fresh water creates what most in the coastal community say are some of the best oysters in the world.But the coronavirus outbreak has been threatening a way of life that’s been a part of this community for generations. It’s a pandemic impacting both land and sea.“We don’t know what’s going to happen and we’re still not 100% optimistic that everything is going to be the same once this is all done,” Markow said.For the better part of 40 years, Markow has operated Mystic Oysters. The small family-owned company prides itself on harvesting oysters directly from their own oyster beds and shipping them directly to restaurants and suppliers up and down the East Coast. But as countless restaurants closed because of the coronavirus, Mystic Oysters no longer had a customer base.Like so many other small businesses across the country, COVID-19 has forced Mystic Oysters to reinvent themselves. The company has started selling directly to consumers, harnessing social media and word-of-mouth to bring customers directly to the docks to buy oysters as fresh as they come. They’ve even started coordinating with other small businesses and fisherman to hold farmers’ markets and pop-up sales tents around the area.Revenue is still down considerably but Markow sees a future in their new business model.“It’s exciting to see the opportunities that are out there that we weren’t aware of,” he said. “We were forced into a situation to reinvent our business and I think in the long run it’ll be a positive, in the short run though, definitely scary.”Experts say that kind of ingenuity and creativity is something other small businesses can emulate as they try to navigate the uncertainty surrounding the virus.“That’s always been the staple of small business, finding those market opportunities and working with the resources they have to survive,” said Holly Wade, who serves as a researcher with the National Federation of Independent Businesses.As for Mystic Oysters, they see diversification as a way forward. For the first time in the company’s history they’ve even started selling fresh lobsters directly to consumers. Markow hopes other small business owners who might be struggling see what they’re doing here and find hope for a future rebound.“Don’t give up, keep thinking. North Korea outlined steps Saturday to dismantle its nuclear testing site -- and confirmed that international journalists, including from the United States and the United Kingdom, would be invited to watch this month as its tunnels are blown up.The announcement, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as reported by state news agency KCNA, came a day after Pyongyang pledged no longer to carry out unannounced missile tests or other activities that put flights at risk, according to a United Nations aviation agency.North Korean leader Kim Jong Un previously had announced the conclusion of North Korea's nuclear testing program and the intended shuttering of the Punggye-ri complex. He said on April 20 that his nation already had "completed its mission" to test its weapons capability.The statement Saturday gave greater details of the "technical measures" North Korea would take to dismantle the test site and "ensure transparency of discontinuance of the nuclear test."International journalists will be invited to conduct "on-the-spot coverage in order to show in a transparent manner" how the nuclear site is being put out of use, with a dismantlement "ceremony" scheduled for as early as May 23, depending on weather, the news agency said.Since space is limited, only journalists from China, Russia, South Korea, the United States and the United Kingdom will be allowed access, according to KCNA.First, explosives will be used to collapse the tunnels, KCNA said.
