SALT LAKE CITY — A Colorado photographer says he watched the infamous monolith in southeast Utah fall to the ground and says he knows exactly how and why it disappeared last weekend.The mystery monolith captured world-wide attention and intrigue after its discovery in a remote area southwest of Moab, on a 4x4 road near the Canyonlands Needles District. The silvery metallic structure has even inspired copycats to be erected on the other side of the world.How it ended up in a secret spot a half a mile off the road is still a mystery, but photographer Ross Bernards is shedding light on how it vanished-- and what the group who took it said to him as they hauled it away in pieces.Ross Bernards goes on adventures for his career."I'm an adventure and outdoor lifestyle photographer, that's what I do for a living," he said. "So, my job depends on me finding unique and cool places."The photographer, who is based in Colorado, explained that he's also a certified canyoneering guide. Bernards said he's worked with outdoor brands like Kelty, Sierra Designs, and Utah-based Ogden Made.He often finds himself in some of the most remote places in Utah, and said eastern Utah is his "happy place."When a middle-of-nowhere spot in his happy place found itself in the middle of an international monolith mystery last week, Bernards decided to check it out in person.He said he wanted to go out to the monolith before it disappeared, or before the masses found out."I wanted to go out there and try light painting with my drone," Bernards said.Just a couple of days after reading an article on the metal formation, Bernards realized the coordinates were posted online. Realizing time was of the essence, he and three friends make the several-hour trek on Friday.They arrived after dark, and Bernards explained they ended up with the monolith all to themselves.The four of them took pictures of the monolith in the moonlight. About an hour later, Bernards described what he saw after he said four other visitors walked up."Two of them stand back, two of them walk forward and walk up to the monolith and start pushing on it a little bit," he recounted. "And then one of them turns to my friends who are a little bit further up the canyon next to it-- where I was a little further back-- and said, 'Hope you got your photos.'"After that, Bernards said the two gave the monolith a couple of big pushes, and it began to lean over."That's when the rest of them came up, and all four of them pushed it over to the one side, and then pushed it back to another side," he remembered. "And it just fell straight onto the ground."Just like that, Bernards watched the monolith that captivated and mystified people across the globe, topple over."Right after it had fallen over and made a loud 'thud,' one of them said, 'This is why you don't leave trash in the desert,'" Bernards said.He explained the group began to break the monolith down into pieces to throw in a wheelbarrow."As they were loading it up and walking away, they just said, 'Leave no trace,' and left," he said.Bernards explained that he and his friends camped out overnight, and even cleaned up some of the rivets left behind from the fall of the monolith.Fast forward to the next morning-- the message from the monolith demolishers on his mind-- Bernards would find he was hardly the only person who set out to see the strange metal sculpture in person.He took pictures that show several vehicles lined up and parked on the roadway, with more driving down toward the area."You could see the road from the dust just coming up, and you could just see car-after-car coming and going," Bernards said. "I mean, we probably saw 70 or 80 different cars there."He said there were several people in each car, some with dogs wandering off-leash.Bernards talked about how he saw people walking everywhere on the land, some even hiking up the wrong canyon in search of the monolith.Not to mention, the people had swarmed an area miles up a high clearance, 4x4 road. Bernards described seeing minivans and sedans trying to navigate the road.He expressed a worry that this would lead to search and rescue calls, and place an undue burden on local authorities as well as the Bureau of Land Management."It made me understand exactly why these people did it," he said. "One of the reasons that we didn't stop them, is we all agreed with them."Bernards said he's been called out by people saying that he was part of the problem, and he said he completely understands.Bernards said that he practices the "leave no trace" principle and expressed that his job is to visit off-the-beaten-path places, responsibly.He also explained he has a lot of experience with cross-desert navigation and 4-wheel driving.Still, he said he felt guilty afterward about making the trip.After seeing the number of people who showed up, Bernards said the monolith didn't need to be out there."Leave the art to places where art should be and let mother nature have her space for art," he said.And for anyone who is buying into the conspiracy theories about how and why around the mystery metal monument and its sudden disappearance, Bernards can at least set the record straight."Aliens were not involved in any way, shape, or form in this thing. They had nothing to do with it. Nor was it some secret government project. None of that had anything to do with it" Bernards said, with a smile and chuckle. He watched as crews on the U.S. side placed coils of barbed wire on top.A border patrol agent wearing camouflage and armed with an assault rifle — part of a tactical unit deployed when there is a heightened threat — walked in the sand below where the men worked. They tried to apply for a job at a Wal-Mart in Tijuana but were told they need a Mexican work permit. So they were considering seeking asylum in Mexico but were unsure of giving up their dream of earning dollars."We're still checking things out," he said.On Friday, people walking through one of the world's busiest border crossings into Mexico passed by a pair of Marines on a 20-foot lift installing razor wire above a turnstile.RELATED: Photos: Aerials of U.S.-Mexico border fenceNearby Army Sgt. Eric Zeigler stood guard with another soldier. Both were military police officers assigned to protecting the Marines as they work.The 24-year-old soldier from Pittsburgh spent nine months in Afghanistan. "It's very different over there, obviously. It's a lot more dangerous," Zeigler said.He said he was surprised when got his deployment orders sending him to the U.S.-Mexico border."But I'm happy to go where I'm needed" he added as a man walked by carrying shopping bags headed to Tijuana.The U.S. military has deployed 5,800 active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border.RELATED: Video?shows people climbing on top of border fence near Friendship ParkSo far, more are not expected, despite President Donald Trump's initial assessment that 10,000 to 15,000 were needed to secure the border against what he has called an "invasion" of migrants. Most in the caravan of several thousand are families, including hundreds of children.Another 2,100 National Guard troops are have also been deployed since April as part of a separate mission. Like the military troops, they are not allowed to detain illegal crossers. Instead, they have been monitoring cameras and helping to erect barriers.Of the 5,800 soldiers and Marines, more than 2,800 are in Texas, while about 1,500 are in Arizona and another 1,300 are in California. All U.S. military branches, except the Coast Guard, are barred from performing law enforcement duties.That means there will be no visible show of armed troops, said Army Maj. Scott McCullough, adding that the mission is to provide support to Customs and Border Protection."Soldiers putting up wire on the border and barriers at the ports of entry will be the most visible," he said.Marines and soldiers share the same duties in California and Arizona. These include erecting tents, setting up showers and arranging meals for troops working on the border, and assigning military police to protect them.There are no tents or camps being set up to house migrants, McCullough said. Medics are on hand to treat troops and border patrol agents — not migrants — for cuts, bruises and any other problems.Combat engineers — whose duties on the battlefield include setting up tactical obstacles to prevent the enemy from moving freely — are using their expertise to string wire on border walls and erect temporary fencing, McCullough said.Construction engineers have been assigned to weld together barriers and move shipping containers to act as walls.In Laredo, Texas, about 100 soldiers have been installing three layers of razor wire along the Rio Grande, working on the banks during the day and on the bridges at night to minimize the disruption to cross-border traffic.The current mission is scheduled to end Dec. 15 for now. It's unclear how much it will cost and military leaders have refused to provide an estimate.Critics have questioned the wisdom of using the military on the border where there is no discernible security threat. Since the Nov. 6 elections, Trump has said little about the matter and no border threat has materialized.Some border communities fear the barricades will scare off Mexican shoppers. The city council in Nogales, Arizona, slashed a proposed bonus for all employees in half over concerns about how the military's presence would affect its sales tax revenue after the military closed off two lanes at its border crossing.Defense Secretary Jim Mattis defended the deployment during a visit to the Texas border this week, asserting that in some ways it provides good training for war.Suyapa Reyes, 35, said she was puzzled as to why she would be seen as a threat. Reyes, her mother, 12-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son left Honduras with the caravan on Oct. 13, fleeing violence and poverty in her hometown of Olanchito de Oro.She does not want to return after coming such a long way but if she cannot get asylum and the border looks too dangerous to cross, she said she'll have no other choice."I'm not going to risk my life or safety nor that of my children," she said. 6241

SAN DIEGO — SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A life science development firm has unveiled plans to transform eight acres along San Diego's waterfront into a mixed-use hub that could attract numerous leading edge companies to the city.Development firm IQHQ announced Monday that it closed on the site along Harbor Drive and will break ground on the project's first phase this week. The firm says it has entitlements and key permits for new office, lab and support retail space for the complex, called the San Diego Research and Development District, or RaDD. In a news release, the firm said this would be the largest urban commercial waterfront site along the Pacific Coast. The development is sure to bolster an already vibrant life sciences industry in San Diego, with biotechs clustered mostly in the Torrey Pines area. This could attract more to relocate downtown. The project would be the third major commercial development in downtown, along with the Padres plan to build office space at Tailgate Park, and the redevelopment of Horton Plaza into a tech hub."This is probably, in terms of the commercial sector, the most important pivotal moment in San Diego's modern redevelopment history," said Gary London, of commercial real estate consulting firm London Moeder Advisors.IQHQ chief executive Stephen Rosetta told ABC-10News this was the premier site to build on the west coast, if not the entire USA. "This project is really special to us because we're headquartered here in San Diego, and the partners live locally and have for most of our lives," he siad. IQHQ bought the property from Manchester Financial Group for undisclosed terms. Manchester Financial recently completed the new U.S. Navy Headquarters, on the north end of the site, with move-ins scheduled for October. Manchester also still holds the part of the property for a 1,035 room hotel and a 1.9 acre plaza. 1879
