WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says Vice President Mike Pence’s airplane struck a bird upon takeoff from a New Hampshire airport, causing the pilot to return to the airport out of caution. Pence was returning to Washington from a campaign event Tuesday at an airport hangar in nearby Gilford. When Air Force Two took off from Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, it struck a bird. A senior administration official said the vice president and his entourage were in no danger. The official wasn't authorized to address the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. 583

WAYNE COUNTY — Four children were killed when a semi struck a car that was slowing in a construction zone on an Indiana interstate Thursday evening. It happened shortly after 5 p.m. on eastbound I-70 in Wayne County, about 70 miles east of Indianapolis.According to Indiana State Police, troopers arrived to find a Chevrolet car and a semi pulling a box trailer both on fire, just west of a construction zone.State police investigators believe the truck did not slow down when it came upon slowed traffic near the construction zone and slammed into the back of a car, pushing it into another semi.Witnesses told the Wayne County Sheriff's Office that the driver of the semi that struck the car from behind was operating in an "erratic manner" prior to the crash. Investigators say evidence revealed that stopped traffic was not a contributing factor to the crash.Preliminary toxicology reports indicated that the driver had multiple drugs in his system at the time of the crash. He was arrested and lodged into the Wayne County Jail on the following preliminary charges:Four counts of reckless homicideFour counts of operating while intoxicated causing deathOperating while intoxicated causing serious bodily injuryIndiana State Police say a passerby was able to pull the driver of the passenger car out of the vehicle, but none of his passengers.State police say four children inside the vehicle were all pronounced dead at the scene. He escaped his burning truck and was taken to a hospital in Richmond. The driver of the second semi was uninjured. The preliminary criminal investigation by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office indicates that drugs were a contributing factor in causing the crash and that criminal charges are forthcoming.I-70 eastbound remained closed nearly 12 hours and was reopened around 5 a.m. Friday morning. This story was originally published by Katie Cox at WRTV. 2300

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump officially named Amy Coney Barrett as his Supreme Court nominee over the weekend. What we know about herBarrett has long been rumored to be a possible Supreme Court justice and before being nominated, she was believed to be the favorite among conservatives to take the seat vacated by the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.Barrett is currently serving on the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and she spent several years as a professor at Notre Dame Law School, where she also earned her own law degree.Barrett is believed to be a true conservative, having formerly clerked for the late right-wing beacon Justice Antonin Scalia. If appointed to the high court, her rulings would likely be in line with her mentor. When accepting Trump’s nomination on Saturday, she said Scalia’s “judicial philosophy is mine, too.” Scalia helped popularize the idea of originalism, which follows the idea that courts should interpret the Constitution as it was originally intended by those who wrote it.In recent years, Barrett has sided with conservatives on cases involving immigration, guns rights and abortion. In a 2017 article, Barrett took issue with Chief Justice John Roberts’ ruling to keep the Affordable Care Act intact in 2012. Writing for the Norte Dame Law Journal, Barrett said “Chief Justice Roberts pushed the Affordable Care Act beyond its plausible meaning to save the statute."Barrett is also by legal standards young at only 48 years of age. Recently, both political parties have opted for younger justices to ensure they can serve for decades.Barrett and her husband, Jesse Barrett, a former federal prosecutor, have seven children, including two adopted from Haiti. They live in South Bend, Indiana, but the judge was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she was raised Catholic. If appointed to the Supreme Court, conservatives would hold a 6-3 majority over their liberal colleagues.Senate Republicans plan on swiftly moving forward with Barrett’s nomination, despite being weeks away from the general election. The confirmation process is sure to be a contentious one, with Democrats expected to highlight the possibility of the Affordable Care Act being dismantled and the fate of a woman’s right to choose in question.Watch Barrett accept the Supreme Court nomination: 2326

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon says the U.S. will deploy additional troops and military equipment to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to beef up security, as President Donald Trump has at least for now decided against any immediate military strike on Iran in response to the attack on the Saudi oil industry.Defense Secretary Mark Esper says this is a first step, and he is not ruling out additional moves down the road. He says it's a response to requests from the Saudis and the UAE to help improve their air and missile defenses.Esper and Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, say details of the deployments will be determined over the coming days. 690

We all know processed foods can be bad for you, but with recent technology, some processed foods may be becoming the healthier alternative. When it comes to living a healthier lifestyle, many of us are willing to jump on the bandwagon of trying healthier alternatives. Right now, there are plenty of options for different types of milk, such as almond milk, soy milk, cashew milk and coconut milk. But, none of those have the kind of protein as the real thing.Innovative food technology is changing that. For example, there is now a milk made out of peas. The pea milk claims to have the same texture and same 9 grams of protein as the real stuff. Adam Lowry, the founder of Ripple says, “I think that technology responsibly applied can be a great way of creating more delicious plant base foods.”The plant-based milk that nutritionists say has the most similar benefits to the real deal is not meant for just vegans and vegetarians.Lowry says, “What I think is a much broader trend is people just wanting to eat more plant base or to eat a little bit less animal protein.”Jessica Crandall is a registered dietitian and says, there is a benefit to plant-based products. However, like any packaged food, she says you should still pay attention to the label.Crandall says, “So it might be a plant-based product but are there any added oils to get that flavor. So, if you are using a chicken nugget product or plant-based protein product again just be aware of the nutrition you need or your child needs that’s important.”Whether you want to live a healthier lifestyle, one thing we learned is that flavor matters. But, remember not to neglect the nutritional benefits food is meant to give us. 1723
