SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The King family, who launched "Chelsea's Light" after the rape and murder of their daughter Chelsea in 2009, has decided to end the popular "Finish Chelsea's Run" event after eight years.In an interview with 10News from the family's home near Chicago, Chelsea's father, Brent, said they are proud of the impact they have been able to have through "Finish Chelsea's Run," but that it was time to move on from the event."Our family wants to thank everybody that has ever come out to run in our race. It's spectacular. It's beautiful. It brings us a lot of joy. But at the same time, it reminds us how we lost our little girl," King said.Chelsea was a 17-year-old student at Poway High in 2010 when she went for a run at Rancho Bernardo Community Park. A registered sex offender, John Gardner, later pleaded guilty to dragging King into a secluded area near Lake Hodges, raping her, and strangling her to death. He buried the body nearby.Shortly after his arrest, Gardner also admitted to the murder of an Escondido teen, Amber DuBois, who had disappeared a year earlier.The King family began the "Chelsea's Light" Foundation, through which it carried out "Finish Chelsea's Run" and a companion baseball tournament. King says "Chelsea's Light" will continue to exist and raise money. However, he has launched a new nationwide organization called "Protect the Joy."King says he will use the experience he gained helping pass "Chelsea's Law" legislation in several states to protect youth from sex offenders to help build a bigger, stronger organization dedicated to issues of defending children."I've built an organization that mirrors the Sierra Club, or the Surfrider Foundation, or Greenpeace. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Metropolitan Transit System has launched an initiative to keep their buses and trolleys clean and their riders and employees safe.MTS officials said their ridership has dropped 75 percent since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Now, with officials are seeing a recent uptick in riders, the agency is implementing new health and safety measures.Nikki Jefferson has relied on the trolley to get to work for the last three years. When the cases of COVID-19 started popping up around San Diego County, she was nervous about getting back on board.“I still use hand sanitizer after my last stop, anytime I touch the button,” Jefferson said.To help control the spread of COVID-19, the MTS is now cleaning their 800 buses and 135 trolley cars twice a day. MTS is even using the deep-cleaning fogging technique to disinfect high-touch areas.Additionally, hand-washing stations are installed at their 54 transit stops and plexiglass barriers protect bus drivers from passengers.When on a bus or trolley, passengers are urged to practice social distancing whenever possible.Officials said all riders on buses or trolleys, and riders at stops or stations, will be required to wear face masks or coverings.MTS CEO Sharon Cooney said, “We’re going to educate all of our customers so that they know you can’t come on board without as mask for some kind of face covering.”It’s a move Jefferson agrees with as she spends most of her time riding the trolley.“It makes me feel safer and less of a chance that I’m going to catch COVID-19, since I have to go to work, but I don’t want to bring it to work with me or have it around me,” said Jefferson.MTS officials said they will educate the public about the face coverings. Some staff will also have face coverings on hand. But they add if someone refuses to wear one, they’ll look into issuing a citation.So far, 33 MTS employees have tested positive for the coronavirus; 22 have recovered and have returned to work. 1984

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The COVID-19 pandemic has been tough on kids, as they have been stuck at home for school and for play. However, a second-grader from the College Area is putting his time to good use. Seven-year-old Max Kelley came up with an idea to help feed those in need. Max and his younger sister Lucy were playing out in the backyard when he approached his mom with an idea of wanting to start a business."He wanted to do a water recycling business," says his mom Lauren. "So we went around collecting water bottles and cans. We went around to high schools, the bay, and the beach. Every week, we would return it to the recycling center, and we would get the money."And while some kids might take the money to buy something for themselves, Max wanted to do something completely different, and completely unselfish. His first thought was to think of others, and how the money might benefit somebody else."I realized that there are people in need," says Max. "And need food and water." His mother wasn't surprised at all, describing her son as very caring."He came up with the idea himself, and that was to donate the money to a local food bank," Lauren said.So the day before Thanksgiving, Max, Lucy, and the family donated their collection of 8.43 to the Special Delivery Food Bank in Mission Hills. "My family and the kids all got a standing ovation from all the patrons that were there," says Lauren.One check has been delivered, but Max is definitely not finished giving to those in need. As he and Lucy have plans to raise even more money for the food bank. "It made me feel happy," Max said. 1616
