INDIANAPOLIS -- Administrators at the Charles A. Tindley Accelerated School say an instructional assistant was fired Tuesday after she was found in possession of a handgun on campus.Police were called to the school at 3960 Meadows Drive around 9 a.m. Tuesday on a report of a staff member with a handgun.Officers arrived and took 31-year-old Dominique Squires into custody on preliminary charges of carrying a handgun without a license.According to school administrators, Squires was employed as an instructional assistant at the facility. Tindley administrators said all proper procedures were followed and no students were in danger at any point during the incident.Administrators also said Squires’ employment with Tindley was terminated immediately for violating school policy.As of Wednesday afternoon, Squires had been released without bond. The case was awaiting a formal charging decision by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.A call to Squires seeking comment Wednesday was not immediately returned.  1025

It's Halloween, a great time to be scared, right? But for many of us fears aren't fun and games. You might think it's best to stay away from the things that scare you the most. But one expert says doing the opposite may help you more.How about if you're afraid of germs?"You could touch the inside of the toilet and you can rub that on your face," says Psychologist Dr. David Shanley.It sounds gross, and if you're afraid of germs the thought is downright terrifying.But Shanley, who helps people fight their phobias, says facing your fears head on could be the key to getting over them. The first step is to asses exactly what they're fearing and what they're doing to avoid it. Then determine how much exposure to that fear a client can take. For example, a fear of dogs.  "If they take their fear head on and go to the dog park straight out then they're going to save themselves a lot of time of working up step-by-step," Shanley says.  Not everyone can go that far that fast. But Shanley says there has to be some level of exposure to make progress. Not just to fears on the outside, but on the inside.  "Part of the exposure is actually flooding them to those scariest thoughts," Dr. Shanley says.  If a person were afraid of elevators or tight spaces, overcoming the fear is about more than riding from floor to floor.  "You more want them actually thinking all the worst case scenarios so that they know that the next time they need to get into the elevator they can do it whether they are having happy thoughts or negative thoughts," Shanley says.  And when facing a fear of heights, the same principles apply.  "I would ask the person to, all right can you climb up here?" Shanley says. "And then as they are climbing up I would also be telling them, all right now look down and think about wow that's a long ways down and what if I fell?"  Dr. Shanley says these are all things you can try on your own, and repetition is key."Without it their success rate of the treatment is a lot less," Shanley says.  And don't be shy. Shanley says if you don't face your deepest, darkest fear, it could come back. Something to keep in perspective when things get a little dirty."I don't have to like it. Is what some would call "living in sin" also living illegally? It is in Michigan, thanks to an old law.Some want to do away with the law that bans unmarried couples from living under the same roof.State Sen. Steve Bieda is leading the way to get ride of the antiquated law."It is actually one of the silliest laws we have on the books."The law was passed in 1931 to stop what it calls "gross lewdness." Unmarried, unrelated people of the opposite genders living together could face up to one year in prison and a ,000 fine.While it's hardly enforced, there is another reason to get it off the books."Because it's still statutory law, in certain tax situations, they have to consider that in doing their taxes."There have been unsuccessful attempts in the past to get rid of the law."It's an easy fix. There's a repealer statute in the senate committee. I'm hoping to get it out in the near future," Bieda added.Some say the law needs to go, but Michigan lawmakers should be focused on more important things.Mississippi is the only other state with a similar law, but lawmakers there are trying to do away with their law too. 1139

In one of the most divisive political seasons in U.S. history, finding common ground has been a challenge. But one activist decided to put rubber to the pavement in the hopes of finding what connects us.Seth Gottesdiener recently embarked on a cross country odyssey on his bicycle.“It's my preferred method of transportation and I find it really meditative,” said the avid cyclist. “It's one of my favorite things to do athletically outdoors.”The 33-year-old social justice activist mounted his two-wheeler back in late September for what he called "The Great American Bike Ride."“I thought why don't I bike across America and talk to people,” said Gottesdiener. “I'll talk to just denizens of the country and see where they're at and see how this year has affected them and their opinions.”The 45-day journey began in Los Angeles. His plan was to pedal his way through 22 cities and 13 states, concluding his expedition in the nation’s capital on Election Day.“I was not prepared for the great Southwest,” he said. “It was very intense. It was very unrelenting. The heat was over 100 degrees a lot of the days, giant mountains, really dry.”All along the way, Gottesdiener met with Americans from all walks of life. He interviewed them as part of a feature documentary.“I want people to hear voices that they would have never come encounter with on their own. I want to connect Americans together.”The ride also took him on a journey of self-discovery.“There’s parts of the country that I hadn't ever seen before, like Arkansas, like Kentucky, and a lot of Tennessee. And it was beautiful,” he said.It was also an opportunity, he says, to gain a better understanding of fellow citizens bitterly divided by politics. He hopes the journey reminds one another of the human spirit that connects us all.“Be there for each other. Help each other.
