The news out of El Paso is devastating. I'm heartbroken for the victims and their families. Far too many communities have suffered through tragedies like this already. We must act now to end our country's gun violence epidemic.— Elizabeth Warren (@ewarren) August 3, 2019 293

The government’s leading infectious disease expert told CNN on Thursday that the NFL will need to take significant steps in order to conduct a season this fall.During an interview with CNN, Dr. Anthony Fauci said that the NFL will need to consider playing games in a “bubble,” much like how the NBA and MLS plan on resuming their seasons later this summer."Unless players are essentially in a bubble -- insulated from the community and they are tested nearly every day -- it would be very hard to see how football is able to be played this fall," Dr. Fauci told CNN. "If there is a second wave, which is certainly a possibility and which would be complicated by the predictable flu season, football may not happen this year."Dr. Fauci's comments come as several states, including Arizona and Florida have seen a jump in coronavirus cases. As of now, the NFL continues to plan on playing games in home stadiums. But decisions on moving forward will need to be made in the coming weeks, with training camp starting in a month, and preseason games in August.NFL chief medical officer Dr. Allen Sills told the NFL Network that placing NFL players in a “bubble” was not realistic. The number of players and coaches employed by the NFL is considerably higher than the MLS and NBA."Dr. Fauci has identified the important health and safety issues we and the NFL Players Association, together with our joint medical advisors, are addressing to mitigate the health risk to players, coaches and other essential personnel," Sills said in a statement to the NFL Network."We are developing a comprehensive and rapid-result testing program and rigorous protocols that call for a shared responsibility from everyone inside our football ecosystem. This is based on the collective guidance of public health officials, including the White House task force, the CDC, infectious disease experts, and other sports leagues."Make no mistake, this is no easy task. We will make adjustments as necessary to meet the public health environment as we prepare to play the 2020 season as scheduled with increased protocols and safety measures for all players, personnel and attendees. We will be flexible and adaptable in this environment to adjust to the virus as needed." 2249

The lake in California, where former "Glee" star Naya Rivera tragically drowned in July, has reopened and banned swimming. The Lake Piru Recreational Area reopened on Aug. 20, according to the park's Facebook page. The park had been closed since July 9, since the actress first went missing. The park continued to stay close due to the coronavirus pandemic and the wildfires ravaging California.Still, residents told TMZ that they believe the park's restrictions somehow related to Rivera drowning in the Ventura County lake.Since reopening, the park has put precautions, including a swimming ban, the park's website stated. The park says shore fishing, personal watercraft, and boating activities are permitted.Rivera went missing on July 8 while boating with her 4-year-old son at the lake. Ventura County Sheriff's Office said Rivera rented a boat at the lake and excursed her son.Authorities were alerted when other boaters later found Rivera's boat drifting in the northern portion of the lake with her son sleeping onboard.Rivera's body was found on July 13.At the time, Sheriff Bill Ayub said Rivera and her son were swimming when the actress began to get tired. He thinks Rivera mustered enough energy to get her son on the boat but couldn't climb back in herself.Investigators believe Rivera drowned in what appears to be a "tragic accident," the office wrote in a press release. On July 14, an autopsy by the Ventura County Medical Examiner revealed Rivera's death as drowning. Her death certificate, which was obtained by People and The Blast, said the actress died within a "manner of minutes."After Rivera's death, a petition on Change.org was created urging park officials to put signs up warning swimmers of how dangerous the lake was.According to the Los Angeles Times, seven people have drowned in the lake between 1994 and 2000. 1848

The most dangerous place for women is the home, according to a new UN study.Out of an estimated 87,000 women killed last year, some 50,000 -- or 58% -- were killed by partners or family members, according to the 2018 report on gender-related killing of women and girls by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).More than a third of the women intentionally killed in 2017 were killed by a current or former partner, and 137 women are killed by family members every day, it said. While the majority of intentional homicide victims are male and killed by strangers, women are far more likely to die at the hands of someone they know, the study showed.UNODC Executive Director Yury Fedotov said women "continue to pay the highest price as a result of gender inequality, discrimination and negative stereotypes" and that gender-based homicide is a "lethal act on a continuum of gender-based discrimination and abuse."The study, released on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25, looked at homicide data related to gender violence and "femicide," a term understood as a gender-based hate crime perpetrated by men.Globally, Asia was the region with the highest number of women killed by partners or family members last year, at 20,000, followed by Africa (19,000), the Americas (8,000), Europe (3,000) and Oceania (300).However, rates were higher in Africa and the Americas, meaning women faced the greatest risk of being killed by partners or family members in these regions. In Africa, these homicides accounted for 3.1 victims per 100,000 of the female population and in the Americas, the rate was 1.6 victims per 100,000 of the female population -- compared with 0.9 per 100,000 in Asia.Europe showed the lowest rate of gender-based homicide, with 0.7 victims per 100,000 of the female population. While countries have taken various steps to address violence against women and gender-related killings -- including the adoption of special units and more training in the criminal justice system -- the report said there is no sign of a fall in the number of gender-related killings of women and girls worldwide. The total number of female homicide victims appears to have increased since 2012, it said, when the number of women killed by partners or family members was estimated at 48,000 -- or 47% of all female homicide victims. The new study has called for a series of measures to combat the global problem, including coordination between police, the criminal justice system, health and social services, and involving men more in addressing the problem."In order to prevent and tackle gender-related killing of women and girls, men need to be involved in efforts to combat intimate partner violence/family-related homicide and in changing cultural norms that move away from violent masculinity and gender stereotypes," it said. 2892

The Justice Department is investigating Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke for possibly using his office for personal gain, following a referral from Interior's inspector general, two sources familiar with the investigation say.The full extent of the inquiry is unclear.Zinke has faced multiple ethics questions during his time at Interior, and the inspector general's office has multiple public inquiries into the secretary including the department's handling of a Connecticut casino project, whether the boundaries for Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument were redrawn to benefit a state lawmaker and conversations between Zinke and Halliburton Chairman David Lesar about a Montana land development project.Zinke said he has not been contacted by the Justice Department."They haven't talked to me. It will be the same thing as all the other investigations. I follow all rules, procedures, regulations and most importantly the law. This is another politically driven investigation that has no merit," Zinke told CNN.The Justice Department declined to comment. Interior's inspector general's office said it would not comment on Justice-related issues.President Donald Trump's Cabinet secretaries have faced scrutiny over their use of government resources, including former Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson.CNN has also learned Justice Department investigators began probing Scott Pruitt's questionable ethical conduct before he left as Environmental Protection Agency administrator, according to multiple people familiar with the matter. The inquiry was opened up after a referral from the EPA IG regarding whether Pruitt took any action to benefit an energy lobbyist he rented a condo from for below market rate. The probe appears to have stalled since Pruitt left office over the summer, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter. 1922
