SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- People throughout San Diego County are searching for answers after hearing a mysterious boom Wednesday afternoon. Dozens of San Diego Residents in La Jolla and Del Mar took to Twitter after hearing the noise before 12:45 p.m. "Felt it in La Jolla / Windansea - even my dogs started barking," one Twitter user said, referring to the noise. Several people wondered whether or not an earthquake could be to blame, but according to the United States Geological Survey, the nearest earthquake was a 2.9 magnitude near Corona reported at 4:16 a.m. Wednesday. USGS' website states that, "reports of a bang are a clue that it's a sonic boom, but not an ironclad indicator since shallow earthquakes often sound like booms or bangs."10News has reached out to military officials to see whether or not military exercises may have caused the boom.The Marine Corps, however, did send a statement that reads, in part: "While we are aware of media reports of a possible sonic boom, no 3rd MAW units have reported one in San Diego air space. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Purple tier restrictions enacted so close to the holidays hit San Diegans hard.We're in month eight of the pandemic and cases of anxiety and depression are sky high.Licensed Psychologist Dr. Michelle Carcel explained what is causing these strong emotions, "the longevity of it, the continuous stress that we have to endure, the change of our lifestyles."The CDC reports during late June of 2020, 40% of U.S. adults reported struggling with mental health or substance use.Dr. Carcel said it's important to step back and realize what and how you're thinking. "A lot of times we just believe our thoughts, we just believe what we're thinking and that can be very dangerous right now. We need to question what we're thinking, step back and go, 'gosh! Is this really fair to myself?' And use curiosity and compassion."Some have canceled holiday plans with family, due to the rise in coronavirus cases. Others feel guilt and fear of spreading the virus."When we feel guilt, guilt is a transition emotion, it can really help us identify something that we need to learn from or change from or grow from," Dr. Carcel said. "Using that as a stepping stool, a tool, 'Am I feeling guilty because I can't spend time with my family?' If that is the case, 'Why am I doing it?' Most likely you are doing it because you are protecting your loved ones and you care about your loved ones. That is a wonderful and noble thing. Put yourself in a very good position with that thought."Dr. Carcel said a new study shows those who adapted their routine to fit the pandemic are thriving. One adaptation is instead of attending a spin class, going bicycle riding outdoors with a socially distanced group.Others are visiting with friends outside at a distance instead of indoors."This isn't what we actually want our lives to look like, however we do see an end in sight," Dr. Carcel said alluding to vaccine trials that are showing promising results.Dr. Carcel said the better we adapt to the way things are currently, the easier it will be to snap back to our old norms when restrictions are lifted. 2101

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neighbors in Hillcrest say an abandoned church has become a campground for the homeless. The church sold the land to developer LMC North Park Holdings in 2018. They were still leasing it out until about a month ago. That's when residents say the homeless started moving in. "It's more or less the drug crowd, sex trafficking, stuff like that that winds up utilizing these areas," he said. The spot on Park Boulevard and Meade Avenue is boarded up, covered in graffiti, and littered with needles. On Tuesday, firefighters say transients smoking drugs started a fire at another vacant building a few blocks down. Passante says it's just a matter of time before that happens at the church. "It's the same people you see over and over and over again and most of them have some kind of mental illness," said Passante. "The quicker places like this can be demolished the less we'll have that problem.LMC North Park Holdings says they are aware of the problem and have hired 24/7 security. Our crews didn't see any security guards while out there for several hours gathering the story. They say they've been waiting on permits and have plans to start demolition by the end of the year. 1206

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police and other credit card experts are warning of a new scam being used to steal bank card information and PINs.Earlier this month, police arrested four people who installed small cameras on ATMs. They say there could be more.Experts say stand-alone ATMs at stores or in parking lots are the most enticing targets for the thieves, as are drive-up ATMs."Whenever we come up with a way to figure out how to thwart it, then the crooks can figure out how to zig past that zag," says SDSU Fowler College of Business Lecturer Steven Andres.Andres says the best thing people can do is avoid using cards altogether. Andres says to use apps like Apple Pay, which don't send any bank information during transactions."They don't actually send your real credit card number to the vendor that you're working with. Instead, a random number gets sent that's only valid for that transaction at that vendor on that minute of the day. So in the future if that vendor has their computer system hacked, that number's completely worthless," Andres says.Otherwise, Andres says to use a credit card instead of a debit card, that way you can dispute a charge and not have to wait for the stolen money to be put back in your account.He also advises people to stay away from drive-up ATMs where it's more difficult to cover your PIN as you type it in. 1354
