He says many of his customers are using the homes for secondary income, or a way to expand their family’s living space.“These home are start to finish 90,000 dollars, everything is included except for the permit fees,” Avery said.Earlier this year, the City of San Diego reduced the cost of granny flat permits, which ranged from ,000 to ,000.After a steady process, Striffler’s home was gently placed in her daughter’s backyard. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One person was shot in San Diego's Shelltown neighborhood Sunday afternoon, San Diego Police confirm.According to San Diego Police, the shooting happened just after noon at the La Michoacana grocery store located at 1702 Vesta Street. The suspect, a man in his 20s, pulled out a handgun and demanded money from the cash register.The owner, a 40-year-old man, opened the register and gave the man money, police said. The suspect went to a second cash register and demanded money. The employee opened the second register and gave the suspect money.As the suspect was turning to leave, the owner pulled out a handgun. The suspect turned to the owner and the owner shot the suspect twice, hitting him in the abdomen and in the wrist, police say.The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital, but police said his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. 879

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Parents with students in the San Diego Unified School District are concerned after finding out the state medical board subpoenaed doctors who wrote their students medical exemptions for vaccinations.The district’s physician, Dr. Howard Taras, tells 10News, “We have many more medical exemptions over the past two years than we’ve ever had before.”Taras worked with the district for 30 years and says the increase in medical exemptions concerned him, so he brought it to the Committee on Infectious Diseases of the American Academy of Pediatrics.“I gave them loose data, like how many kids in the school district had medical exemptions that any doctor would see as a very worthwhile reason and how many were coming from doctors that were not very sound reasons in common medical practice," Taras said.The committee then took that list to the Medical Board of California. Now, parents in the district are upset knowing their child was included in a list sent to the state.“I’m absolutely appalled at the irresponsibility to have compiled this list in the first place. This is nothing that should have ever been getting out," a mother who did not want to be identified told 10News.10News learned the medical board is now investigating and has already subpoenaed 32 doctors who wrote medical exemptions for students in the district. A parent shared the letter that was sent home with their student with 10News. The letter states the information being subpoenaed includes:1. The unredacted copy of medical vaccination exemption letters 2. The name and date of birth of all children with medical vaccination exemption 3. The name(s) of the parent and/or legal guardian 4. The contact information of the parent and/or legal guardian “This is a violation of FERPA this is 100 percent unethical and I would say illegal based upon what’s taken place," a parent said.The district’s litigation specialist explains all parents have the right to seek protective action to prevent the disclosure of records. “If some of the actions that I and the medical board have taken lead to fewer medical exemptions, I really truly believe we will save people from fatality," said Taras.A representative with the state medical board responded to our request for more information saying, “The Board does not provide information on its complaints and investigations as both are confidential by law.” 2398

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Planned Parenthood officials say a recent act of vandalism at their Pacific Beach location will not "stop us from serving our patients."Red paint appeared to be thrown across the location's sign and windows on Mission Bay Drive sometime between late Sunday afternoon and Monday. A photo of crews cleaning the site was captured by a Reddit user and posted online here.In a statement to 10News, Planned Parenthood said the vandalism would not affect operations:"While we are disappointed by the recent vandalism to our health center, no attempt at intimidation will stop us from serving our patients. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Nurses and healthcare workers gathered Friday morning demanding Palomar Health provide more nurses and PPE to support their staff as they see a surge in patients.Nurses said they are stretched thin and maxed out caring for our community during the pandemic."Palomar claims they took a hit due to the pandemic, but it's the nurses and caregivers who are taking the hit in the from of increased patient loads, unsafe staffing levels and inadequate PPE," ICU nurse Joanne Meza said.She and a group of healthcare workers held red signs reading "Save Lives, Safe Staffing Now."Palomar Health sent ABC 10News a statement stating they received a waiver from the California Department of Public Health Wednesday that would allow Palomar to "assign one ICU nurse to care for up to three patients, depending on patient acuity. The waiver, which only applies to one 12 bed unit which has both intensive and intermediate care patients located in the same area, has not been implemented and is only in preparation for a potential patient surge or reduction in workforce due to sickness."The law states safe ratios are one ICU nurse to two patients.Meza accused the hospital of furloughing employees while they knew the impact the pandemic would have.She also accused the hospital of commingling COVID and non-COVID patients. Palomar said that is "completely false. As a healthcare system, it is irresponsible to instill fear in our community. These false allegations by the union are frightening and endanger the health and safety of our community by discouraging people with serious conditions from seeking medical care."Palomar also said they always meet or exceed PPE requirements. 1698
