BEIJING, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The United States wants to work with China to expand the global economy and promote the development of the green economy, said a U.S. Commerce Department official Wednesday in Beijing.Cameron Kerry, General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Commerce, said at a news briefing at the U.S. embassy that the two countries faced an important time in their relations."My visit here this week is an appetizer in the banquet of events between the U.S. and China."According to U.S. Commerce Department, Commerce Secretary Gary Locke will lead the first cabinet-level trade delegation to China next week to promote exports of leading technologies as part of President Barack Obama's state export plan to increase U.S. employment.The department said the mission was intended to promote exports of leading U.S. technologies related to clean energy, energy efficiency, and electric energy storage, transmission and distribution.The two sides would also exchange views on issues such as trade and the investment environment, innovation and the protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights, said Kerry.Locke will also attend the economic track dialogue of the second round of Sino-U.S. strategic and economic dialogue in Beijing in late May.Twenty-four U.S. companies will join Locke for the China leg of the trade mission. The delegation will stop in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, and Jakarta.
NANNING, April 3 (Xinhua) -- The government of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region issued a fire ban Saturday ahead of the upcoming Tomb-sweeping Day, in a bid to prevent forest fires against the backdrop of a prolonged drought.According to the ban, tomb-goers are forbidden to burn paper money or incenses and to set off fireworks in forest zones from April 3 to 17.They are also banned from burning straws, leaves, charcoal and others in forest zones.Violators will be fined or even detained and prosecuted, according to the ban.As of Wednesday, the drought, which began in southwestern China last year, has left 19.4 million people with water shortages and affected 6.48 million hectares of farmland in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Guangxi and Chongqing, according to the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.It is a tradition for Chinese to visit family graves during the Qingming or Tomb-sweeping Day, which falls on April 5 this year. Memorial activities range from burning paper money to setting off fireworks.In 2008, the government made Tomb-sweeping Day an official holiday in response to public appeals.

BEIJING, May 1 (Xinhua) -- China's police forces nationwide were ordered Saturday to step up security of kindergartens and schools after a spate of violent attacks against school children.An emergency circular issued by the Ministry of Public Security also called for harsh punishments of criminals who attacked school children in order to deter potential attackers.It ordered all necessary measures be taken against school attackers in accordance with the law to stop a crime in progress.The ministry instructed police to work with courts and prosecutors to handle such cases swiftly.Police must also work with education authorities to comprehensively screen all campuses and their surrounding areas for security risks.
WUHAN, March 26 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday started building a canal from the middle section of the Yangtze River to a tributary that connects with China's South-North Water Diversion project.Costing more than six billion yuan (880 million U.S. dollars), the 67.23 km project will divert 3.1 billion cubic meters of water every year from Yangtze's Jingjiang section to the Hanjiang River, one of the major sources of water for north China once the diversion project is complete.China's South-North Water Diversion project is designed to divert water from the water-rich south to the dry north.The central part of the project will divert water from Danjiangkou Reservoir on the Hanjiang River to north China cities like Beijing and Tianjin.According to research by Hubei provincial environmental protection bureau, without water from the canal the Hanjiang River would only have one third of its average runoff once water is diverted, and the water level of middle and lower reaches of Hanjiang would drop by 0.5 meter.The canal, which will be completed in 2014, will prevent problems arising such as algae pollution if water levels were decreased dramatically, said Shen Xiaoli, an engineer with the Hubei Environmental Sciences Institute.The canal is expected to benefit about 8.9 million people and 43,000 hectares of farmland in the lower reaches of Hanjiang.Once completed the five to six meters deep canal could be used by ships weighing more than 1,000 tonnes, facilitating transportation of coal from the north to the south, said Xu Shaojun, head of the Hubei Provincial Investigation and Design Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower.
BEIJING, April 29 (Xinhua) -- China's parliament on Thursday adopted the Law on Guarding State Secrets and the amended State Compensation Law at the closing session.Wu Bangguo,chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People' s Congress, or the top legislature, presided over the closing of the four-day bimonthly session.Wu said, the amendment to the State Compensation Law will regulate the use of public power, protect legitimate rights and interests of citizens, legal persons and social organizations. The 14th session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC) concludes in Beijing, capital of China, on April 29, 2010. Wu Bangguo, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, presided over the concluding meeting.Wu said, the Law on Guarding State Secrets has made clear legal liability in guarding state secrets, which will help safeguard the state security and interests.The legislature also reviewed the report on migrant workers which stressed protecting the rights and interests of this group and improving social services for them. Wu also urged to quicken the pace of urbanization.The Standing Committee reviewed the report on the development of cultural industry which urged greater development of the industry so that it becomes a new engine of economic growth.Wu said the Committee also reviewed the report on road traffic management.
