On Monday, electors gathered to formally affirm that President-elect Joe Biden was indeed the victor of the 2020 Presidential Election.During his Electoral College victory speech Monday night in Wilmington, Delaware, Biden spoke about how all Americans have the right to have their vote counted."In America, politicians don't take power," Biden said during his speech. "People grant power to them. The flame of democracy was lit in this nation a long time ago. And we now know nothing, not even a pandemic or an abuse of power, can extinguish that flame."He also praised election officials, who Biden said endured threats of violence and verbal abuse."One of the extraordinary things we saw this year was that everyday Americans, our friends and our neighbors, often volunteers, Democrats, Republicans, Independents, demonstrating absolute courage, they showed a deep and unwavering faith in and a commitment to the law," Biden said. "They did their duty in the face of the pandemic. And then they could not and would not give credence to what they knew is not true."WATCH RECAP:At 7:10 p.m. ET, Hawaii reported its electoral vote which had Biden receiving 306 votes to President Donald Trump’s 232 votes.Around 5:30 p.m. ET, President-elect Joe Biden received enough votes to affirm his presidential election win.California's 55 electoral votes put him over the 270-vote threshold with 302 votes Monday afternoon after a day of voting in each state.Electors meet at a place and time determined by their state and cast their votes. Voting took place throughout the country at various times Monday. Vermont was the first state to cast electoral votes when submitted its three votes for Biden. Tennessee followed shortly after by submitting its 11 votes for Trump. As of 5:30 p.m. ET, 534 out of the 538 Electoral Votes had been cast. Biden is expected to get 306 votes to Trump's 232 based on the results of the presidential election.Hawaii is the last state to cast their Electoral College votes, at 7 p.m. ET. Its 4 votes are expected to go to Biden. The Electoral College votes are formally counted during a joint session of Congress on January 6. Typically, the Electoral College vote is little more than a rubber stamp approval of the November election. However, the post-electoral government machinery has received more attention than in elections past due to President Donald Trump's attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. For instance, Trump has been personally pressuring Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, a Republican, to appoint a special session of the state legislator in the hopes of appointing new Electoral College voters — and threatening not to campaign for two Republican Senators that are up for re-election in January. Those two elections will determine which party controls the Senate for the next two years. 2842

Nothing, not even the COVID-19 pandemic, will stop Santa from delivering toys to good boys and girls every Christmas Eve — and nothing will stop the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) from tracking the big guy's flying sleigh. This year, NORAD launched its 2020 Santa-tracker website, which will be updated regularly throughout the month season with new Holiday-themed games, music and videos. The Santa tracker is live now, and can be watched live at any time on Christmas Eve at NORADSanta.org. "Thanks to the dedicated men and women who keep a watchful eye over North American airspace 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. NORAD tracks everything that flies in and around North America. On December 24, we also have the special mission of tracking and escorting Santa,” said Major-General (Maj.-Gen.) Eric Kenny, Commander of the Canadian NORAD Region. “Utilizing the North Warning System's powerful radar and satellite systems, we are able to see into the North better than ever, allowing us to track Santa more precisely, ensuring he has a safe trip through North American airspace.”Visitors to the site will be able to track Santa's progress as he makes his rounds to homes across the globe.Last month, NORAD said that it would still be tracking Santa this holiday season despite COVID-19 staffing cutbacks. Though the command's Santa Tracker Hotline, 1-877-Hi-NORAD, will still be active on Christmas Eve, not every child will get to speak to a live volunteer and will get a pre-recorded message instead. However, children will still be able to track Santa via social media pages, Amazon Alexa, Onstar and a new mobile app that is available for download now on Apple's App Store and Google Play.According to the Associated Press, NORAD has been tracking Santa every year since 1955, when Col. Harry Shoup of the Continental Air Defense Command took a call from a child who dialed a misprinted department store telephone number looking for Santa. 1967

Now more than ever, the impact of not having enough minority schoolteachers is part of the conversation, with efforts focused on undoing systemic disparities.“For so long, I think people have been uncomfortable having discussions about race and how that influences not only students but teachers in a school setting, where you are learning about what society is supposed to look like,” said Eric Duncan, Senior Data and Policy Analyst at The Education Trust.Duncan is part of The Education Trust’s Education Diversity Team, a group that advocates for higher achievement of all students, particularly those of color or living in poverty.Research in Sage Journals found minority students have more favorable perceptions of minority teachers, which can translate to better academic outcomes. Yet, teachers of color make up just 20% of the workforce. Close to 40% of all schools don't have a single teacher of color.Meanwhile, racial and ethnic minority students now make up a majority of the public-school population.Schools have made gains recently hiring more teachers of color, but retention is an issue because they leave the workforce at a higher rate than white teachers. The Education Trust found that's in part due to working conditions.Minority teachers often take on additional roles outside of teaching that they are not paid or even recognized for.School culture is another significant factor.“Discipline policies that educators of color are frankly tired of seeing and our country is tired of seeing the way that students are over disciplined, are misunderstood, particularly students of color, are driven out of school, are suspended for minor misconducts,” said Duncan. The Education Trust has recommendations on how schools can retain teachers of color, starting with collecting data by race and ethnicity on recruitment, hiring and retention. And also, providing scholarships, loan forgiveness or repayment, and relocation incentives. The group also suggests developing leaders that promote positive working conditions for a diverse workforce, and ensuring curriculum, learning and work environments are inclusive of all racial ethnic groups. 2162

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Toronto Raptors are NBA champions for the first time. The Raptors defeated the Golden State Warriors 114-110 in Game 6 of the NBA Finals on Thursday night. The Raptors won the series 4-2, denying the Warriors what would have been a third straight championship.Kyle Lowry and Pascal Siakam had 26 points apiece for the Raptors, Fred VanVleet and Kawhi Leonard each had 22 for Toronto.Klay Thompson scored 30 for Golden State but left with a knee injury. Andre Iguodala scored 22 points and Stephen Curry had 21 for the Warriors. Curry missed a 3-pointer with about 5 seconds left, the Raptors tacked on a free throw off a technical in the last second when the Warriors called a time-out they didn't have, and the last game at Oracle Arena was the last game of Golden State's reign. 814

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- An Oceanside man convicted of kidnapping and killing a 3-week-old baby girl and trying to kill the infant’s parents and uncle was sentenced to nearly 142 years to life in prison.Anthony Ray McCall, 32, was found guilty of first-degree murder, kidnapping and attempted kidnapping, along with four counts of attempted murder on March 2.A jury in Long Beach deliberated for less than three hours before returning with a verdict.A co-defendant in the case, Giseleangelique Rene D'Milian, pleaded no contest to first-degree murder for the murder of Eliza De La Cruz as well as for the attempted murders of the infant’s father and uncle. The woman was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.Eliza’s body was found in a San Diego trash bin in 2015.Eliza’s mother said during testimony that she pleaded with McCall not to take her baby. "I couldn't do anything to stop him," Honorato said. She said she could hear the voice of a woman telling her daughter, "I'm your new mommy."She said the voice was the same as the woman who offered her a ride home earlier in the day.A third defendant, Todd Damon Boudreaux, 46 pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact in October of 2016 and was sentenced to time served. 1246
