In California, failing to do so requires back pay, medical expenses, and a civil penalty of 0 a day.Brightwood shut down Wednesday after it lost an accreditation, amid strict new requirements from the Department of Education.RELATED:Brightwood College layoffs may have violated state lawBrightwood College announces sudden closure amid accreditation, financial turmoil“We are assessing what the next step of the company is going to be, many believe there is going to be a bankruptcy filing,” said Jack Raisner, the attorney representing the former workers. Meanwhile, students in San Diego are still seeking answers as to what’s next. They came to the Brightwood campus on Balboa Avenue en masse on Friday for an impromptu meeting with at least one administrator and officials from two visiting colleges. Media was not allowed in.“It sounds credible, but again it’s still all in the works,” said Brian Wentz, a licensed vocational nursing student. “We still need to meet with the financial advisers and feel what’s going on, how everything’s going to transfer, it’s still pretty new to all of us.”Under state law, the students are entitled to request a transfer and/or tuition reimbursement, the latter could require giving up credits already earned. 1626

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego leaders returned from their trip to Mexico City on Wednesday night. The three-day trip focused on building stronger border relations. The trip comes a week after President Trump threatened to close the border if congress didn't come up with an immigration deal or if Mexico didn't stop migrants heading north. The delegation included San Diego and Imperial Beach mayors, Kevin Faulconer and Serge Dedina and former mayor Jerry Sanders. Several city council members from various cities also attended meeting with top Mexican officials. A big topic of conversation was the ongoing Tijuana sewage issue. Impeiral Beach Mayor, Dedina, says the conversations were positive and promising. Dedina says plans to fix the issue include reapairing the water plant that's currently spilling the sewage, taking all of the water out of the Tijuana River Valley and putting an earth-fill dam on the Mexican side to stop the sewage from getting to the beaches. San Diego leaders say the trip was productive and explained that the end goal was to find solutions to enhance the region for the benefit of both countries. 1142

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A grieving mother says the flu was the main cause in the death of her healthy teenage son.Cellphone video captured a smiling Brian Finete, 19, surprising his mother with flowers for her birthday last Tuesday night at their home in Clairemont."The moment was special. He was always a happy boy with a big heart. He loved life and always wanted to make people happy," said Maria Finete.Later that night, Finete played Xbox all night with his friend at his home. Just past 4 a.m., he went to the bathroom. About two hours later, the friend woke up and went looking for him. Finete was found collapsed in the bathroom."I started screaming, said to call 911. I start CPR," said Maria.Finete was rushed to a hospital, but was declared brain dead a few days later. He was taken off life support on Saturday."We have no words to describe this. We don't understand why," said Maria.Finete, who had no known underlying conditions, tested positive for influenza B. Doctors told her the flu had spiked his blood sugar levels, and the combination of the flu and the high blood sugar levels caused him to collapse and stop breathing. "I never thought in my mind my kid would die from that," said a tearful Maria. She says her son had few symptoms. He had a lingering cough from a cold from last month. The night before he collapsed, he woke up in a sweat next to his girlfriend."When he sleeps he always sweats a little bit. He did tell her, 'I'm not feeling that good,'" said Maria. She says he didn't have a fever, took ibuprofen for a headache and seemed fine that Tuesday night. He was discovered hours later."Just so hard to see my baby gone. Don't know what to do without him," said Maria.Amid the grief: the pain of 'what ifs.' Her son decided not to get a flu shot this season, despite almost always getting it in the past."Take it. Take the flu shot if you can," said Maria. Finete had attended University City High and was planning on enrolling in Mesa College this year.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help the family with expenses. 2061

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 68-year-old woman has filed a lawsuit claiming she was sexually abused decades ago by a priest in Rialto, the latest in a wave of litigation targeting the Diocese of San Diego. The woman, identified only as Jane Doe, claims she was abused by Father Efren Neri while he served at Christ the King, a San Bernardino County parish that was then part of the Diocese of San Diego. “For many years, I just lived with it,” the woman said in an interview. “A lot of shame, anxiety all my life.”Father Neri died in 1982, according to the Diocese. In a statement, the Diocese said there are no reports Neri was ever accused of sexual misconduct with a minor. “None in San Diego, none in San Bernardino and none in Fresno,” the statement said. Last week, 20 people sued the Diocese of San Diego, alleging abuses by six other priests. Attorneys say scores of additional lawsuits against the church are coming after a new law took effect temporarily lifting the statute of limitations for accusers to file claims.Statement from the Diocese of San Diego: 1068
