SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Nearly 6,000 San Diego workers have reportedly been laid off amid the coronavirus outbreak, but the actual number could be 60 times higher, according to officials at the San Diego Workforce Partnership. The agency estimates there are at least 350,000 San Diego workers at risk of losing their jobs, the majority of them in service sectors like hotels, restaurants and retail, where there is no option to work from home. However, the state has eliminated the 60-day public layoff notification requirement amid the outbreak, so it is unclear how many people are no longer working. It is focusing on finding employers who have a need today, such as those in delivery, transportation and logistics. It is also working with Amazon to set up mobile job expos. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- On Tuesday, county leaders, along with first responders and behavioral health experts, launched a new program named after a CAL Fire captain who died by suicide in 2017.The Fire Captain Ryan J. Mitchell First Responders Behavioral Health Support Program provides a confidential 24-7 helpline for any local first responder. The helpline is staffed by former and current first responders. The program also connects first responders to local behavioral health resources and substance abuse services.CAL Fire Captain Ryan Mitchell died by suicide on November 7, 2017, at the Interstate 8 Pine Valley bridge.“He loved the acts of fighting fires,” said his widow Denelle Mitchell, in an interview with ABC 10News in October 2019.She also spoke about the difficult days. “What comes with that is a lot of hard work, a lot of hours away from your home and your family and your friends,” she said.Ryan’s father, William Mitchell, became a fire chaplain after his son’s death. While he’s heartbroken his son is no longer with them, he is proud of the legacy he is leaving behind.“Heartbreak and pride are strange bedfellows,” William Mitchell said. “It's hard to process that sometimes. We were always and will continue to be very proud of our son.”Supervisor Nathan Fletcher introduced the policy to create and fund the program in September 2019. The Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance said 82 firefighters, 24 EMS personnel, and one dispatcher have died by suicide so far this year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than 18,000 San Diegans got hired in May as employment began to recover from the depths of the coronavirus shutdown. The Employment Development Department reported Friday that from April to May, employers added 18,200 people to their payrolls. Still, the employment situation in San Diego County is dire. From May 2019 to May 2020, payroll employment is still down by 195,800 workers. "The positive thing is that the worst is behind us and we've seen month over month job growth so we're improving," said Alan Gin, an economist at the University of San Diego. "The negative spin is that we're improving but the situation is still bad."The hard-hit restaurant industry led the way with 9,100 new jobs, as coronavirus related restrictions began to lift, allowing in-house dining with reduced capacity.Eric Adler, who co-founded the Artisan Mexican restaurant Puesto, said this year has been particularly. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police and other credit card experts are warning of a new scam being used to steal bank card information and PINs.Earlier this month, police arrested four people who installed small cameras on ATMs. They say there could be more.Experts say stand-alone ATMs at stores or in parking lots are the most enticing targets for the thieves, as are drive-up ATMs."Whenever we come up with a way to figure out how to thwart it, then the crooks can figure out how to zig past that zag," says SDSU Fowler College of Business Lecturer Steven Andres.Andres says the best thing people can do is avoid using cards altogether. Andres says to use apps like Apple Pay, which don't send any bank information during transactions."They don't actually send your real credit card number to the vendor that you're working with. Instead, a random number gets sent that's only valid for that transaction at that vendor on that minute of the day. So in the future if that vendor has their computer system hacked, that number's completely worthless," Andres says.Otherwise, Andres says to use a credit card instead of a debit card, that way you can dispute a charge and not have to wait for the stolen money to be put back in your account.He also advises people to stay away from drive-up ATMs where it's more difficult to cover your PIN as you type it in. 1354
