INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — University of Notre Dame students are now subject to mandatory coronavirus testing with stricter penalties if they leave town before getting their test results after thousands of fans stormed the football field and threw parties to celebrate a double-overtime upset over Clemson.Notre Dame President, the Rev. John Jenkins, said in an email Sunday that students must undergo coronavirus testing before leaving South Bend, Indiana, for the winter break.Jenkins says if a student is exposed or tests positive, they must quarantine on campus for two weeks. Students who don't complete the test can't register for classes.According to the Associated Press, students will face "severe sanctions" if they host a large gathering.As of Monday afternoon, the university's online COVID-19 dashboard showed six new cases reported on Sunday, giving the school 1,382 total positive cases among students and staff members. Of that total, the school estimated 221 active cases.In a resolution passed Thursday, Notre Dame's Faculty Senate formally expressed disappointment in Jenkins for failing to wear a mask at Amy Coney Barrett's nomination ceremony at the White House Rose Garden, the AP reported. It’s a high-profile Senate race that found itself surrounded in racial tensions, after Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith made controversial comments to a group of supporters saying, “If he invited me to a public hanging, I'd be on the front row.”Hyde-Smith called it an exaggerated form of expression and apologized to anyone she offended. But in a state with a troubled past, some saw the comments as racist.Then, on Monday, the day before the Mississippi election, someone hung several nooses outside the state capitol and left signs, including one that read “We’re hanging nooses to remind people that times haven’t changed.”“I think the controversy over the Senate race in Mississippi is a microcosm over the debates we’re having about race nationally,” says Brian Levin, with the Center for the Study of Hate & Extremism.Also this week, the trial started for the man accused of killing a woman and hurting dozens of others after he rammed his car into a crowd of people protesting a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville. “I think this political polarization has also bled over into an increase in hate crimes,” says Levin.Levin, who studies hate crimes, says the country has seen an increase the past three years in a row, given a recent spike in hate crimes, including the attack on a synagogue that killed 11 people and the apparent racially motivated murders of two African Americans outside a Kentucky grocery store. Levin predicts the trend could continue.“We might very well see, for the rest of the country for 2018 when the FBI releases their data, a fourth consecutive year,” Levin explains. “And I don’t think we’ve seen that in the over quarter century that we’ve been tracking hate crime data in the United States, indicating there is something awry in our society.” 1810

It’s a question that was asked early and often following the passing of Aretha Franklin, "How do you honor a queen?"The answer was on display in Detroit Friday morning as more than 120 pink Cadillacs cruised down 7 Mile Road, escorting the hearse carrying the Queen of Soul to Greater Grace Temple.“I had to cut it off!” said Crisette Ellis, the first lady of Greater Grace Temple, noting that the number ballooned so fast she was amazed.The idea sprang out of a common sight at funerals for fallen soldiers, police officers and firefighters. Bishop Ellis wondered aloud, if a motorcade and police cruisers are used to honor a fallen hero what’s the equivalent for a woman who touched generations of people through her music and good deeds?Franklin’s hit song ‘Freeway of Love’ inspired the move to bring in pink Cadillacs. If you lived under a rock, or are too young to remember, the lyric read: “We goin’ ridin’ on the freeway of love, winds against our back. We goin’ ridin’ on the freeway of love, in my pink Cadillac.”“That has been an anthem for those of us that drive a pink Cadillac,” Ellis said. “Driving a pink Cadillac in our world says success. We get respect when we drive a pink Cadillac, so all I can imagine is that Ms. Franklin would look down and say, ‘That is how you show r-e-s-p-e-c-t to the Queen of Soul.”Nancy Pettaway broke into song while showing her Escalade to camera crews on Thursday, “we did that all the way here.”“Going back I think we’ll just turn the music off and reflect,” she said. “It helps you reflect on your own life and what kind of legacy you will leave for other people.”Pettaway drove from Killeen, Texas to Detroit. The trip took 19 hours, and according to organizers, she wasn’t the one making the furthest trip.“A long trip, but so worth it,” said Pettaway.Perda Harris flew from California to meet her daughter, and her pink Cadillac, in Chicago. “Her music just made the house happy,” Harris said.“We just sang out loud,” added her daughter, Caterina Harris Earl. “We danced. We sang. It was associated with every single family gathering that I remember throughout my childhood.”Harris Earl has been driving a pink Cadillac for more than 20 years — she said the music of Aretha Franklin was always part of her life, now the music brings back floods of happy memories. She said she’s always known that Franklin had an impact on her community, but since her passing she’s been able to learn even more about how she worked along Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and supported the Civil Rights movement.”That makes a big difference for all people,” Earl Harris said. “For all women. As an African American woman, it absolutely impacted me.”That impact is why so many reached out to honor Franklin with a 100+ pink Cadillac envoy. Those who showed up to witness the celebration of life on Friday flocked to the street when the pink Cadillacs arrived, some folks who had waited for hours in line risked their place in line to rush over to snag pictures of the line.Nancy Pettaway summed it up well describing why Franklin’s celebration meant to much: “She moved you. Incredible video captured by researchers at Florida Atlantic University captured the blacktip shark's annual migration off Florida’s southeast coast.FAU researchers refer to the blacktip shark's as the "snowbirds of the sea". The sharks migrate south during the cold months and head up north when the weather, and water, start to warm back up. They leave the north when water temperatures drop below 71 degrees Fahrenheit and start heading south.The video was taken by FAU researchers on February 27, right off MacArthur Park in Singer Island.“Last year, we saw a dramatic decline in the number of blacktip sharks that migrated south. In fact, it was so low that we estimated the population to be about one-third of what we have seen in previous years,” said Kajiura, a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and director of the Elasmobranch Research Laboratory in FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. “We want to make sure that these snowbirds come back to South Florida, because if they don’t, it will have a huge ecological impact in this region.”  According to researchers, this year's video off of  MacArthur Park in Singer Island shows dramatically fewer blacktip sharks during migration season as compared to video footage from previous years.       Mary Stringini is a Digital Reporter for ABC Action News.
