Farmers are empowering America's future farmers through technology, as the agriculture industry becomes more dependent on modern equipment.Farmers are realizing the next generation needs to know how to use the latest and greatest tech tools.Andrew Nelson is a fifth-generation farmer in Eastern Washington who utilizes such as drones on his farm.“Me and my wife and two children live here on the farm in the exact same spot that my parents and grandparents lived,” Nelson said.“We had a few little homesteads that my grandparents set up for their children all within the same small area,” Nelson added.Even when he went off to college, he knew he'd one day come back. He then merged his love of technology with his love of family and farming.“I love to build things, (which) is my biggest draw to farming and software engineering,” Nelson said. “That’s why I wanted to combine the two to build digital and Ag. stuff together.”So now, he has two day jobs. He farms 8,500 acres of wheat, beans, peas and lentils. And, he's a software engineer. He is also a father, which also keeps him occupied. When asked if he'll be teaching his kids about farming and if he'd like them to have agriculture careers, he said, "If they want to. He even has sensors in his fields and grain storage.Megan Wilson, an agricultural education teacher and FFA advisor at a local high school, admits some of the tech that Nelson uses is out of this world.“I even get a little confused by some of the stuff Andrew does, so that is very complicated stuff but you know it used to be that we would plop a farmer in a tractor but now we have so many more options even from a driving aspect,” Wilson said.But she says the students who work with Nelson are intrigued.“They have been doing it since they are knee high and used to doing it the old fashioned way. When they see a computer, they’re mind blown; they don’t believe that’s how you can move into farming and we are moving in that direction,” Wilson said.She says FFA isn't what it once was and it's not just about farming.“It used to be cows, plows and sows and that’s what we did. We showed animals and played in the dirt and that’s what people thought of FFA,” Wilson said.They work with students in the agriculture world to incorporate science, technology, public speaking and interview skills. Wilson says they'd be doing them a disservice if they didn't teach all of that. ESCONDIDO (KGTV) -- Escondido police arrested a man with prior criminal convictions Thursday after they found him passed out in his vehicle wearing a ballistic vest and loaded rifle magazines in his front passenger seat. He also had other weapons and police gear he'd allegedly stolen from a law enforcement officer in San Diego, authorities said.According to a release from Escondido Police Department, officers found the man after a caller reported him passed out around 1:10 a.m. outside the 7-Eleven on West Ninth Avenue. The caller said the man was likely under the influence of drugs and did not respond to attempts at waking him.When officers arrived on scene, they recognized the man as 30-year-old Thomas Vann, who has prior criminal convictions. He was wearing a ballistic vest with loaded rifle magazines that were "plainly visible" on the front passenger seat.Officers were able to wake Vann and detain him. They searched his vehicle and found four fully loaded rifle magazines, 126 rounds of rifle and shotgun ammunition, and stolen police gear, including a tactical vest, a duty belt, a medical kit, and handcuffs. Officers determined the police gear was stolen Wednesday from a law enforcement officer in San Diego. They also found 392 grams of methamphetamine and 78 grams of heroin.Vann was arrested and booked into the Vista Detention Facility on numerous drugs, weapons, and stolen property charges. 1426

(KGTV) — Escondido Fire Department is working to identify potential patients who came into contact with a firefighter paramedic who has tested positive for coronavirus.Escondido Fire Department says it learned Sunday of a firefighter paramedic who tested positive for COVID-19. Several days earlier, the employee was in contact with other people who later tested positive as well, the department said.The firefighter had recently been at work but was asymptomatic at the time. The department is notifying all patients that may have been in contact with the employee.EFD says the firefighter is currently at home under quarantine and has very mild symptoms.Other EFD staff who were in contact with the firefighter at work have shown no symptoms, tested negative for COVID-19, and are being quarantined and monitored in accordance with CDC procedures."The health and safety of our community remains our highest priority.
