SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A North Park barber salon is on the brink of shutting down due to the coronavirus.Melissa and Christopher Cage met in high school. Melissa grew up in Watts and Christopher grew up in West L.A."I love it, you know, it made me who I am. It made me strong," Melissa said.Christopher said it was a dangerous place to grow up, "shootings, drive-bys, everything. That's why I wanted to get my kids away from that."They got married and in 2013, Christopher was laid off. They had three kids with a fourth on the way and at that moment he said he would never work for someone else again.He went to barber school. Five and a half years ago the family picked up and moved to San Diego with a dollar in Christopher's pocket."I think I gave my last dollar to a bum," he said, his wife nodding behind him. They were grateful to live in their aunt's living room as they saved up for a new place. They built up enough money to rent a run-down North Park house. They remodeled it and created Originality Barber Salon. Christopher has a row of barber chairs in the front half of the business and Melissa has a serene intimate salon in the back.Their challenges didn't end when the doors opened. Melissa said their biggest challenge was being accepted by the neighborhood.In 2018, someone spray-painted a racial slur in front of their shop. They cleaned it up and used it as motivation to succeed."I'm not going to fight hate with hate, I'm not going anywhere so you're just going to keep seeing me, so might as well," Melissa said.When the pandemic first hit, they kept their positive attitude, looking at it as a vacation."It was a vacation but then it started to get a longer vacation and I'm like okay, we're starting to dip into our savings now. I'm like we need to start figuring something out," she said.They were able to reopen for a few weeks, due to the county orders, and then, forced to close again.Multiple loan applications were denied. They said they were trudging through the permitting process to work outside. When Monday came and barbers could once again work indoors, Chris said it could be too late.They have a child with health issues, putting her at greater risk for catching the coronavirus, so they're trying to balance safety with finances.The couple said their goal of the business is to leave something for their children. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man under arrest was hospitalized Sunday night after San Diego Police said he slipped out of his handcuffs and got a hold of an officer's gun, leading to an officer-involved shooting at the department's downtown headquarters.According to police, a 25-year-old Hispanic man was arrested shortly after 6:20 p.m. after an incident at a downtown San Diego hotel. A hotel security guard reported the man was “acting strange” and threatening others.Officers took the man to SDPD headquarters on 1401 Broadway, but just after 8 p.m. police said the man somehow freed himself from his handcuffs while inside the patrol SUV, and then broke a divider that separates the prisoner seat area from the cargo area.Police said it was in the cargo area were the man located an officer’s backpack that contained a backup handgun.Officers went to check on the arrestee after hearing noise and saw that he was still in the vehicle but armed with a gun. Officers drew their weapons but backed up from the car.Police said, “Officers gave the male commands to drop the weapon, but he refused to do so. The male fired at least one round from the handgun.”The officers felt threatened at that point, prompting them to fire at least one round, hitting the man at least once in the torso.According to police, “The male reached out the car window, opened the door and exited the patrol vehicle. He was still armed with the handgun and would not comply with officers’ directions. The male tried to open both the rear cargo compartment and the driver’s door of the patrol vehicle, despite officers’ orders to stop. Because he still posed a threat, a Police Service Dog was deployed on the male. The canine bit the male and officers were able to approach and subdue him. The male was still armed with the handgun at the time of his arrest.”After officers provided aid to the man at the scene, he was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to police.SDPD’s Homicide Unit is investigating the officer-involved shooting.Police stated the following information in a news release:“The names of the officers involved in this incident are not being released at this time, but they have been with the department for 8 years, 6 years and 10 months, respectively.The investigation and review process for an officer-involved shooting is extremely thorough. When the Homicide Unit completes their investigation, it will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the officers bear any criminal liability for their actions. The Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an investigation to determine if there were any policy violations, and the Shooting Review Board will evaluate the tactics used by the officers. The Community Review Board on Police Practices will conduct a review of the incident and provide any appropriate recommendations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man and teen were shot in Linda Vista early Friday while visiting the memorial of another local gunshot victim.San Diego Police officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 6500 block of Kelly Street at about 12:30 a.m. Friday. Several witnesses at the scene told officers a man who had been shot was taken in a vehicle that fled the scene.Numerous bullet casings were found in the area.RELATED: Suspect arrested in Linda Vista shooting that left teen deadOfficers headed to Sharp Memorial Hospital to check for a gunshot victim, where they found two men who had been shot. One victim, a 20-year-old Hispanic man, had been shot in the leg and the other victim, a 15-year-old Hispanic male, suffered two gunshot wounds to the buttocks area and one to the leg.Both victim's injuries were considered non life-threatening. Both were uncooperative with police and no suspect information was available, police added.An officer at the scene told 10News the two victims were visiting a memorial set up for 16-year-old Carlos Valdovinos, who was gunned down in the same area in late May. A baseball cap, flowers, and plastic angel could still be seen in the are to two were visiting.The officer said a driver reportedly drove up, leaned out of the vehicle, and shot the two victims before fleeing.SDPD Gang Detectives are handling the investigation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A new initiative in Pacific Beach could keep many businesses afloat but may make parking in the area even harder to find.Twenty-six parking spaces on Ocean Boulevard between Grand and Thomas avenues will be temporarily converted to outdoor dining for nearby businesses.Signs posted near the parking spaces show there will be no parking starting Friday, Aug. 21, until Dec. 30 for a special event.PB Shore Club owner Doug Sondomowicz worked with the city’s permits department, local police and fire departments, and the Coastal Commission for five weeks to get permits approved.The area where the parking spots used to be is now where cars and emergency vehicles can drive through along Ocean Boulevard.PB Shore Club will add 22 tables to the patio, bringing them to about 2/3 of their pre-COVID seating capacity.Sondomowicz said he thinks this will allow him to bring almost 100 percent of his employees back. The tables will be ready to go by lunchtime on Saturday."Originally, we laid off every employee we had here … hopefully with this we will get closer to that 100 percent employee mark,” said Sondomowicz. "During these trying times with COVID-19, the city has been gracious to let us use this and be able to keep us open and try to employ more people. And give locals and tourists still options to be able to eat outside beachfront."Waterbar will add around 20 tables and have their patio ready to go by 4 p.m. Friday.Some people in Pacific Beach say finding parking in the area is already difficult and this restriction will make it even harder.Pacific Beach resident Robert Gally opposes the idea, and he told ABC 10News, "A lot of times, I see police responding out here.
