SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public Thursday for help in identifying a motorist involved in a hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian last week in a Chollas Creek-area neighborhood.The 48-year-old victim was standing next to a parked vehicle along the west curb line of the 5300 block of Chollas Parkway shortly before 1 a.m. Friday when a dark-colored car traveling to the south at high speed on the wrong side of the street hit him, according to San Diego police.Following the fatal impact, the motorist stopped momentarily, then drove off, Officer Robert Heims said.The victim, whose name has been withheld pending family notification, died at the scene.Surveillance cameras captured images of the vehicle -- a four-door sedan, possibly a Lexus or Toyota with a lowered suspension. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect wanted for breaking into an apartment in Imperial Beach and allegedly sexually assaulting a woman while she slept was in custody Thursday evening.Alfred Ruiz-Sandoval, 24, is accused of sneaking in through a window to fondle a woman in her home early the morning of Sept. 3 in the 1300 block of Hemlock Avenue, near Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge, according to Lt. Chad Boudreau of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.The victim called 911 about 5 a.m. to report the invasion and sexual battery and told investigators the suspect ran from her home when she awoke. Officials believe the perpetrator got into the home by removing a screen from her open bedroom window.Currently, Ruiz-Sandoval is in federal custody on unrelated charges, and sheriff's detectives have obtained a separate arrest warrant, Boudreau said. 866

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A person at Southwestern College has tested positive for tuberculosis and may have exposed others to the disease, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Tuesday.The agency is working with the college to notify people who were possible exposed to TB. The period of possible exposure is from last Sept. 10 through Feb. 21, according to the HHSA.Tuberculosis is transmitted from person to person through indoor air during prolonged contact with an infectious person. Most people who are exposed do not become infected."We are recommending that all the identified people get tested to make sure they are not infected," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "Early diagnosis and prompt treatment can prevent the infectious form of the disease."The HHSA and college are reaching out to students and other members of the public who possibly interacted with the positive-testing individual. They can go to the college's Student Health Services Student Center, Room 601F, 900 Otay Lakes Road, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.Affected college employees will be tested separately by Occupational Health.The infected person was not publicly identified, nor did officials specify whether it was a student or staffer.Symptoms of active tuberculosis include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. Tuberculosis can be treated and cured with medication. People who have TB symptoms or are immuno-compromised are encouraged to see their medical health care provider to rule out TB.Tuberculosis is not uncommon in the San Diego region but has been decreasing since the early 1990s and has stabilized in recent years. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Military officials today publicly identified a U.S. Marine who was fatally injured in a weekend training accident at Camp Pendleton.Staff Sgt. Joshua Braica, 29, was behind the wheel of a MRZR tactical vehicle that overturned Saturday at the military station north of Oceanside, according to Maj. Nicholas Mannweiler of U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Special Operations Command. Two other Marines suffered minor injuries in the crash.Braica, a critical-skills operator with 1st Marine Raider Battalion, was airlifted to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where he succumbed to his injuries Sunday evening.The Sacramento native enlisted in the Marine Corps in July 2010 and served as an intelligence specialist with 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, and with Marine Aircraft Group 36.Braica deployed to the Pacific Command area of operations with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit in 2011, and to the Indo-Pacific Command region with 1st Marine Raider Battalion in 2017.His military decorations include a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, two Good Conduct Medals, a National Defense Service Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and three Sea Service Deployment Ribbons.He is survived by his wife and son. 1284

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities today publicly identified a young man who was fatally shot last week during a fight near Horton Plaza.Patrol officers responding to reports of gunfire found Angel Maravilla, 22, mortally wounded at E Street and Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp District shortly after 9:30 p.m. Thursday, according to San Diego police.Medics took Maravilla to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.``The initial investigation revealed the victim and a companion were involved in an altercation with a third man,'' Lt. Matt Dobbs said. ``At some point during the altercation, the (third man) pulled a firearm and shot the victim.''The reason for the fight was unclear. Based on witness accounts and video footage from several businesses, homicide detectives identified the suspected shooter as 27-year-old Reuben David Velazquez, who was arrested Sunday and booked on suspicion of murder, Dobbs said. 917
