BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese farmers have begun to reap crops as autumn drew to a close, and the nation is expecting a good harvest this year, China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) said here Tuesday in a statement on its website.The forecast is based upon higher average yields and an estimate that China's planting area for autumn crops rose by 10 million Mu (about 667,000 hectares) from one year ago, said the ministry.According to figures from the MOA, a total of 386 million mu of crops had been harvested by Sept. 27, accounting for 33.3 percent of the total.In a break down of the harvest, 130 million mu of rice, or nearly 50 percent of the total rice planted, had been reaped, while 140 million mu of corn and 60.7 million mu of soybean were harvested, accounting for 28.5 percent and 46.5 percent of the total, respectively, said the MOA.The ministry also arranged for 29 million sets of farm equipment to help with the autumn harvest, it said.China's grain output reached 530.8 million tonnes in 2009, the sixth consecutive year of growth in grain yield.In the wake of a severe drought in China's southwestern regions earlier in the year, summer grain output this year stood at 123.1 million tons, down 0.3 percent from one year ago.

BEIJING, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- China Friday voiced concern over and strong dissatisfaction with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's recent remarks concerning China's Diaoyu Islands."The Chinese government and people will never accept any word or deed that includes the Diaoyu Islands within the scope of the U.S.-Japan Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu.After her meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara in Hawaii Thursday, Clinton said the Diaoyu Islands fall within the scope of the U.S.-Japan security treaty."The Diaoyu Islands have been an integral part of Chinese territory since ancient times. China has indisputable sovereignty over the islands," Ma said.As a bilateral agreement reached during the Cold War, the U.S.-Japan security treaty should not harm the interests of third parities, including China, the spokesman said.He urged the United States and Japan to do more to boost regional peace and stability.

BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo told Japan early Sunday morning to make a "wise political resolution" and immediately release the Chinese fishermen and fishing boat its coast guard seized earlier this week.Dai made the remarks when he summoned the Japanese Ambassador to China Uichiro Niwa in the wee hours. UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in New York Tuesday afternoon to attend a series of meetings of the United Nations.It is Wen's second participation in UN meetings at the UN headquarters since 2008. SHANGHAI, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- A total of 1.03 million people visited the Shanghai World Exposition on Saturday, a record number since the Expo opened. The total number also exceeded an earlier record.The Expo had received some 64.62 million visitors by the end of Saturday, the 169th day since the event began on May 1. The previous record was set during the 1970 Osaka World Expo in Japan, which about 64 million people attended over a six month period.Attendance may be increasing since this is the first weekend after the week-long National Day holiday and the second to last weekend before the final seven designated days from Oct. 25-31.Since early this morning, the Expo' s public transportation system has been under great pressure as visitors have been seen throughout the Expo site.Visitors needed to queue up for more than one hour before being admitted to most pavilions. Some popular pavilions, including the Oil Pavilion and Space Home Pavilion, stopped visitors from queuing up by 4 or 5 p.m. because of the large crowds.Many visitors could only walk around, take pictures outside of pavilions, or have picnics at rest area. Further, all parades were canceled due to the large number of visitors.Zhou Qian and Dai Shishi from Hangzhou described the long queues as "horrible". But Zhou said she had been prepared for the situation as they visited seven pavilions, including the Egyptian and Spanish pavilions.A visitor surnamed Zhang and her daughter, a high school student in Shanghai, entered the site at 11 a.m. but had only visited three pavilions by 6:30 p.m."And all of them are small ones.
