Wauwatosa, Wisconsin is a picturesque suburb outside of Milwaukee home to 48,000 Americans. It’s normally a quiet town filled with restaurants, shops and family homes, but the last few months have been anything but quiet.“We've had over 60 nights of protests and riots,” said Dennis McBride, the mayor of Wauwatosa. “Protests mostly have been nonviolent, but mostly have not been peaceful.”There were multiple nights the city was under a curfew, the National Guard was deployed and businesses were boarded up.Families marched through the streets like never before. The demonstrations began in this community when George Floyd was killed and intensified after a Wauwatosa officer shot and killed a teenager and was not charged.“It's because of the racism we've had in our country for 400 years. We are not immune from that in a suburb,” he said.“We’ve seen that in towns, villages and communities across Wisconsin: folks really leaning into engaging and organizing to see the change they want in their own communities,” said Tomás Clasen, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union.Clasen said the rising number of protests in suburban communities gives people who normally wouldn’t participate in a front-row seat to change.“People are starting to realize that the problem is larger and impacts their communities in ways they didn’t necessarily acknowledge,” said the attorney.Restaurant owner Chris Leffler said businesses in town were right in the middle, wanting to support the message of the demonstrators but also wanting to protect their livelihoods.“We do need some police reform, but you know we have to trust our police. You know, there's a balance,” said Leffler.Even weeks after protests ended, the town is still boarded up. “Looking at what's happened around our country, unfortunately, I think that there was some anxiety and we had the same anxieties and thought, ‘Better protect ourselves,’” said Leffler. But he said the worry comes with hope. From outrage, policies and attitudes will change.“Black, white, Republican, Democrat, we're all part of this one community, and really, unity is what we're hoping for here as a community,” he said. There have been thousands of protests across the country this year for racial equality and social justice, and now more than ever, these movements are moving outside major cities into smaller communities like Wauwatosa.Experts say one reason more people are engaging in demonstrations in suburban areas: they can connect easily first on social media.“Having access to social media is really useful for building groups,” said Patti Silverman, founder of PERsist, a progressive women’s advocacy group in Washington County, a suburb outside of Milwaukee. “We started probably four months ago with three members. As of today, we have 400.”Silverman and women across her county are gathering to protest and rally for change, something many of these women have never done before.“People don't like to hear that we're here, but just by existing we have power and we have the ability to make change,” she said. These women are organizing in their suburban community, hoping for fairer government and equality for all. They’re making sure they’re speaking out peacefully but forcefully.“I think people are realizing these issues aren’t just aren’t just things that are happening in big cities, and it’s really easy to be comfortable in this county that’s so white and just think, ‘Well, this doesn’t impact me.’ But this is a time, and we’re seeing in the last four years, the consequences of not speaking out, and this is a time to not sit back and be comfortable and to really use your voice,” said Silverman.Keeping the community involved is something these women and their neighbors want to see continue not just this year but for years to come.“We can't be complacent,” said Silverman. PERsist, along with the local businesses, community leaders and neighbors believe starting on the smallest level, in the quietest communities is the best way to fight the silence stopping change. 4047

We're looking deeper into consequences of police misconduct and brutality against minorities, not to overshadow any loss of life, but to highlight the racial systemic issues it adds to, including mass incarceration.“Has taken black fathers, black sons, out of their families and out of their neighborhoods and put them in a situation where even a short jail term leads to long term, lifelong economic consequences,” said Marc Morial, the president and CEO of the National Urban League.Morial spent the early years of his career as an attorney filing civil rights and police brutality lawsuits, defending black cops, and then became the mayor of New Orleans, helping lead an overhaul of the police department there.Morial says it took strong leadership, changes in recruiting, hiring, and training. He even pushed for a rule requiring police to live in the city where they work.“Lesson to be learned, reforming policing is tough and reforming it in a way that is sustainable is doubly tough,” said Morial.According to a University of Hawaii law review article on police brutality costs, African Americans have a higher rate of PTSD than their white counterparts. And that trauma carries over more significantly in work and everyday activities.Loss of life often means children are left without adequate support, the paper added, leaving them to fend for themselves in a school system that often serves as a pipeline to prison instead of a path to higher education.Police misconduct leads to distrust in urban communities and a lack of cooperation on legitimate crimes.Morial says the solution lies in community-oriented policing and funding.“These communities need investments in schools, youth programs, housing infrastructure,” said Morial. “Inner city America has been hollowed out by public policy and private actions. It’s not fair for the next generation. It’s not fair to leave a mess and leave confusion and leave economic in equality for them.”Morial also points to neighborhood beautification, summer jobs programs, and targeted programs for people coming out of jail and prison as systemic solutions. 2118

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Justice Department filed an antitrust lawsuit against Google on Tuesday, alleging the tech company has been abusing its dominance in online search to stifle competition and harm consumers. In the lawsuit filed by the DOJ and attorneys general from 11 conservative-leaning states, officials say Google has accounted for nearly 90% of all search queries in the U.S. and has used anticompetitive tactics to extend its monopolies in search and search advertising.Specifically, the complaint claims Google unlawfully maintained monopolies by doing the following:Entering into exclusivity agreements that forbid preinstallation of any competing search serviceEntering into tying and other arrangements that force preinstallation of its search applications in prime locations on mobile devices and make them undeletable, regardless of consumer preferenceEntering into long-term agreements with Apple that require Google to be the default – and de facto exclusive – general search engine on Apple’s popular Safari browser and other Apple search toolsGenerally using monopoly profits to buy preferential treatment for its search engine on devices, web browsers, and other search access points, creating a continuous and self-reinforcing cycle of monopolizationGoogle has long denied the claims of unfair competition. The company argues that although its businesses are large, they are useful and beneficial to consumers.“Today, millions of Americans rely on the Internet and online platforms for their daily lives. Competition in this industry is vitally important, which is why today’s challenge against Google — the gatekeeper of the Internet — for violating antitrust laws is a monumental case both for the Department of Justice and for the American people,” said Attorney General William Barr. “Since my confirmation, I have prioritized the Department’s review of online market-leading platforms to ensure that our technology industries remain competitive. This lawsuit strikes at the heart of Google’s grip over the internet for millions of American consumers, advertisers, small businesses and entrepreneurs beholden to an unlawful monopolist.”The litigation marks the government’s most significant act to protect competition since its groundbreaking case against Microsoft more than 20 years ago.“As with its historic antitrust actions against AT&T in 1974 and Microsoft in 1998, the Department is again enforcing the Sherman Act to restore the role of competition and open the door to the next wave of innovation—this time in vital digital markets,” said Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey A. Rosen. The suit could be an opening salvo ahead of other major government antitrust actions, given ongoing investigations of major tech companies including Apple, Amazon and Facebook at both the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission. The nation’s antitrust laws are in place to regulate the conduct and organization of corporations. They’re generally meant to keep the market free, open and competitive to benefit consumers. The DOJ says these antitrust laws empower the department to bring cases like this one to remedy violations and restore competition, as it has done for over a century in notable cases involving companies like Standard Oil and the AT&T telephone company. 3315

Watch out, Amazon and Walmart. Kroger is making a big move in the online grocery fight.America's largest grocery chain launched "Kroger Ship," a direct home delivery service, in four cities on Wednesday: Cincinnati, Houston, Louisville, and Nashville. It will expand to new markets in the coming months.Kroger already offers delivery from 1,200 of its stores through third-parties like Instacart and curbside pickup at 1,250. Both are valuable tools to help Kroger offer current and potential customers convenience and keep pace with rivals.Related: Kroger's online sales up 66%. Amazon and Walmart have a real competitorBut Ship new will give the company a new weapon as more shoppers order groceries online and legacy brick-and-mortar retailers Walmart and Target build up their digital capabilities to compete with Amazon. Amazon's Whole Foods acquisition last year blurred the lines between online and offline food retail."Kroger has now returned the favor," said Bill Bishop, the co-founder of grocery retail consulting firm Brick Meets Click."This move expands Kroger's online market potential since it gives Kroger a way to serve customers who don't have convenient access to their stores," he added.Kroger's delivery website went live on Wednesday, and shoppers can pick from more than 50,000 grocery, household, beauty, and pet food choices. The company is focusing on its private label collection with Ship by offering more than 4,500 of its own brands. These sales are valuable for Kroger since they come with higher profit margins, helping offset expensive online shipping costs. For example, Kroger is offering Bromley's for Men, a new shave line the company introduced last week.Kroger is offering free shipping on purchases above , but orders below will come with a .99 delivery fee. During the launch phase, the company is offering shoppers free shipping and 15% off their orders using a promo code.Ship also features an order-and-save subscription, which Kroger believes can help convince customers to make repeat purchases.Online purchases will be fulfilled directly from Kroger's two current fulfillment centers and a third one opening in the fall. The company is working with FedEx and the Postal Service to ship orders, which can be delivered as soon as the next day. 2299

We all know we could be scammed and these days it’s becoming harder and harder to tell what’s legitimate and what’s not. Phishing attack are not only increasing, they’re getting more sophisticated. Here are the main ways scammers are targeting you and what you can do to beat them at their own game.It all starts in your inbox with your email. It’s the easiest way for scammers to strike. They’re phishing for your personal info and their bait is pretty convincing.Girbin Klein is a senior security analyst and said, “These are the types that people will get into their email inbox typically that claim to be from Apple, claim to be from American Express, whatever company or bank people might be associated with."Scammers are getting more sophisticated with how they approach us. "It's claiming that you know you've won something or your accounts are being closed down because there's been some weird activity with your account," Klein added. "I mean those are the types of emails that get people's attention."Right now, fake Netflix emails are circulating. The email asks you to verify your billing information by clicking on the link. It even gives you a separate link to visit the help center. There’s also a fake email being sent out that’s claiming it’s from Apple. Recent research suggests one in four emails is trying to get your Apple ID, making it the top target of hackers. If you receive one of these emails, here’s what you should do. Never click on the link. That’s what scammers use to steal your information. Instead, if you’re really concerned, go to the company's website on your own and check things out. You can also try hovering your cursor over a link to see where it directs you, but there’s now new software that doesn’t always show you that. Finally, look at the email sender’s address. Who sent it? Are there inconsistencies? Sometimes it looks like it’s from a family member, friend or company you know, but the address doesn’t match up.Remember, just because they’re phishing doesn’t mean we have to take the bait. Something else to keep in mind is your bank will never send a generic email requesting personal information be sent back to it. Make sure you check your online accounts frequently and to install firewall, anti-virus and anti-spyware in your computer. 2308
