The E.W. Scripps Company, based in Cincinnati, Ohio announced it has added two television stations to its business, bringing its current total to 35 stations in 26 markets. The stations purchased are ABC affiliates KXXV/KRHD in Waco, Texas, and WTXL in Tallahassee, Florida. Both were owned by Raycom Media."These two stations are strategic additions to our portfolio," said Brian Lawlor, President, Local Media."We have been interested in expanding into Texas for some time as we believe Texas will play an important part in U.S. politics moving forward," Lawlor said of the KXXV/KRHD purchase.Scripps owns WFTS in Tampa, WFTX in Fort Myers and WPTV in West Palm Beach, making WTXL its fourth in the state."The addition of Tallahassee will allow us to better cover the state's politics as we expand our reach beyond 50 percent of Florida’s television households," Lawlor said in a memo to Scripps employees. The announcement follows Scripps’ news Aug. 15 that it has completed the sale of its 34 radio stations for .5 million.Scripps' stations are affiliated with all of the Big Four television networks: ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX. The purchase of the two new stations adds 130 employees to The E.W. The Columbus Police Department says it is preparing for demonstrations this weekend after a law enforcement officer shot and killed a man as he entered his own home earlier this month.Casey Goodson, 23, was shot and killed by a Franklin County sheriff's deputy on Dec. 4. Goodson's family says he did not have a criminal record and says it's unclear what crime he could have committed prior to the shooting.Goodson's family and law enforcement authorities have given conflicting reports as to what happened since the day of the shooting. Goodson's grandmother, Sharon Payne, told a 911 dispatcher on the day of the shooting that Goodson had just returned from the dentist when she heard gunfire. She said Goodson then stumbled into the kitchen, bleeding and carrying a Subway sandwich that he had bought on the way home. But according to law enforcement, Franklin County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Meade — who at the time was working for a U.S. Marshal task force that was seeking another suspect — saw Goodson drive by and flash a gun. Police say Meade later confronted Goodson near his car and asked him to drop his weapon. When Goodson refused, Meade fired.Attorneys for Goodson's family say law enforcement's account of the incident omits "key details that raise cause for extreme concern" and allege that police mistook Goodson's sandwich for a gun.Despite law enforcement's claims that Goodson was armed as he drove by officers, they have not said if he was armed at the time the shooting took place. Goodson's family says that he was legally licensed to carry a concealed weapon. There is no video recording of the shooting on file, as Franklin County does not require police to wear body cameras, and its SWAT vehicles are not equipped with dashboard cameras. On Friday, Columbus Police Chief Tom Quinlan said he expects protests to take place throughout the city over the weekend."I hear the cries for this community. I hear your demands for answers, for accountability, for justice ... we understand the issues driving people to gather and speak out," he said. 2071

The catchy tune kids can’t get enough of, and parents love to hate, “Baby Shark” is officially the most viewed video ever on YouTube at more than 7.1 billion views. The song was recorded by then-10-year-old Korean-American singer Hope Segoine and produced by South Korean educational company under their Pinkfong brand. It was originally uploaded to YouTube on June 17, 2016.In 2019, the song got into the Billboard Top 100 chart. The previous record-holder on YouTube was the 2017 single “Despacito” by Puerto Rican singers Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee. That video was uploaded in January 2017 and has about 7.05 billion views. With the repetitive lines and easy dance moves, some parents might be wondering why it took “Baby Shark” so long to get to the top of YouTube’s most-watched list. 795

The excitement of two COVID-19 vaccines with more than 90 percent efficacy is undeniable. In November, both Pfizer and Moderna announced its scientists had developed vaccines with efficacy at or near 95 percent, but scientists are warning these vaccines are not the "silver bullet" to ending the pandemic.“We don’t want to give the public the impression that there’s an emergency use authorization and these vaccines become available in a small amount in December and we can go back to our pre-pandemic behavior,” said William Moss, executive director of the International Vaccine Access Center at Johns Hopkins. In June, the FDA released its vaccine guidelines, saying it would consider emergency use authorization for any vaccine testing with at least 50 percent effectiveness, so there is a reason for celebration, according to Moss, but only after certain questions about the vaccine are answered.Dr. Anthony Fauci has said the initial vaccines will prevent symptoms in those who become infected, rather than kill the virus itself. Moss says that means immunized people might be able to spread COVID-19 to others. He also wonders how long immunization will last. One year? Three years? Will booster doses be needed? They're all careful considerations that will only emerge once one is put into play, according to Moss.“It’s obviously tragic that the [COVID] cases are occurring that quickly, but it does help a vaccine trial because otherwise you just have to wait that much longer for samples to come in,” said Moss. The vaccine process has innovated how scientists and researchers approach these types of situations, however, according to Moss.In traditional vaccines, a small dose of the virus is injected into the body so the immune system can create antibodies. In the COVID-19 vaccine, though, both Moderna and Pfizer have used what is called messenger RNA (mRNA) where the virus’ genetic code is injected into the body so it can instruct cells on what antibodies to produce. Scientists say this way is faster, safer, and can create a stronger immune response as people are not exposed to the virus.“I suspect that if this all goes well and these vaccines are safe and continue to demonstrate 90 to 95 percent efficacy, we’re going to see other vaccines of a similar type,” said Moss. 2298

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ensemble forecast projects will be 207,000 to 218,000 COVID-19 deaths in the United States by Oct. 10.As of Thursday, 197,364 Americans have already perished from the coronavirus, according to Johns Hopkins University. With the new forecast, that means approximately 9,600 to 20,600 more people could die in the next three weeks. Two previous ensemble forecasts have already been published: one Sept. 3 and another on Sept. 10.The Sept. 3 forecast projected up to 211,000 deaths by Sept. 26. The Sept. 11 one projected up to 217,000 deaths by Oct. 3. 603
