SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials have reported 2,686 new COVID-19 infections -- the 26th consecutive day with more than 1,000 cases.On Saturday, there were no new virus-related deaths reported.Saturday was the 18th day with more than 2,000 new cases.Another 35 people also were hospitalized, according to Saturday's data, and another two were sent to intensive care units.The county's cumulative cases increased to 142,647 and the death toll remained at 1,402.Nine new community outbreaks were confirmed on Friday. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California Highway Patrol is reporting no fatalities and 26 drunk driving arrests in San Diego County for the Labor Day weekend period of 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Sunday.Last year for the same period, there were 40 DUI arrests and no fatalities in the county, according to the CHP.Across California, the CHP reported 551 DUI arrests and 18 fatalities for the same period. Last year, they reported 717 DUI arrests and 11 fatalities.The DUI arrests are only those made by CHP officers, while fatality statistics are for all law enforcement agencies.Statewide, 13 vehicle occupants were killed in CHP jurisdiction, six without safety belts. There were four motorcyclists killed in CHP jurisdiction, one without a helmet.The CHP investigates all crashes on freeways, and on all roads in unincorporated areas. 833

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials have reported 540 new COVID-19 infections and one new death related to the illness, raising the region's total to 59,656 cases and 908 deaths as the county continues to await news on whether it will sink into the dreaded purple tier of the state's four-tiered COVID-19 reopening plan.State officials reported Wednesday that San Diego County had an unadjusted new daily coronavirus case rate of 8.7 per 100,000. The adjusted case rate had dropped to 7.4 per 100,000, above the baseline of 7, qualifying the state for the purple, or most restrictive tier of the reopening plan. Last week's unadjusted case rate was 7.8 per 100,000.According to the reopening plan, a county has to report data exceeding a more restrictive tier's guidelines for two consecutive weeks before being moved to that more restrictive tier. A county then has to be in that tier for a minimum of three weeks before it may move to a less restrictive tier.San Diego County has been in the red tier for months, skirting but ultimately avoiding the purple tier, which would necessitate the closure of almost all indoor operations of nonessential businesses. Recent trends have shown a slow but steady increase in infection numbers.If the county cannot drop its adjusted daily case rate below 7 per 100,000, indoor operations in locations such as restaurants, museums, places of worship, breweries and retail businesses will have to either close entirely, move to outdoor operations only or modify in other ways.In recent weeks, the region had an unadjusted rate well above the purple tier guidelines, but a significant effort to increase the volume of tests had allowed for an adjustment to bring it back to the red, or substantial, tier.Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, said retail operations, including indoor shopping centers, will be limited to 25% of building capacity, down from the current 50%. Schools, unless they have already restarted in-person learning, will be restricted to distance learning. K-12 schools already in session can continue, Wooten said."Cases are increasing in the region and it is vital that we take this virus seriously and recommit ourselves to the strategies that are proven to work," she said Thursday. "Wear a face covering when you go out in public, stay six feet away from others and avoid crowds and large gatherings."The county's testing positivity rate actually improved, declining 0.3% from last week to reach 3.2%, but remains high enough for this metric to remain in the orange tier.The state's health equity metric, which looks at the testing positivity for areas with the least healthy conditions, increased from 5.1% to 5.3% and entered the red tier. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Kmart store in Spring Valley is among 46 unprofitable outlets slated to start closeout sales this week, according to an announcement from the Sears Holding Corp.Five stores in California are among the 12 Kmart and 33 Sears stores slated to close by November. This includes the Kmart store at 935 Sweetwater Road in Spring Valley.The other California closures are Kmart stores in Los Angeles, Antioch, and Clovis and a Sears in Santa Cruz.Sears Holding Corp. owns both the Sears and Kmart chains. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced today a person at Patrick Henry High School was recently diagnosed with tuberculosis and may have exposed students and staff.The dates of exposure are from August 26, 2019, to March 13, 2020. The agency is working with San Diego Unified School District officials to notify those who were potentially exposed and provide TB testing.Patrick Henry High School is currently participating in social distancing protocols and onsite TB screening will not be available at the school. Identified students who may have been exposed to TB can get tested with their primary care provider. Students who do not have a medical provider may contact agency staff to arrange for free testing by appointment only.Identified staff will be provided testing by the San Diego Unified School District.Tuberculosis is transmitted from person to person through indoor air during prolonged contact with an infectious person. Most people who are exposed do not become infected.``Testing is recommended for everyone who was determined to have been exposed to make sure they are not infected, since initial infection typically has no symptoms,'' said Dr. Wilma Wooten, county public health officer. ``Early diagnosis is important so that people can get treatment and prevent them from developing the infectious form of the disease.''Symptoms of infectious tuberculosis include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. People with symptoms of TB, or who are immune-compromised and may not show symptoms, should consult their medical provider to be evaluated for the bacteria.
