SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Picture this: a woman needs to get from Chula Vista to her job in Sorrento Valley. She uses an app to call a smart shuttle, which takes her to a transit center she hops on a subway, and is whisked away.Or, she can drive on a toll lane and get across the county in 20 to 25 minutes."Think about the impossible, take risks. Keep going," said Hasan Ikhrata, the San Diego Association of Government's executive director. Ikhrata and his team unveiled its transit vision for the region Friday, with a target completion of 2050.The goal is to take the reliance off the car or make it more efficient for drivers with lanes that can change purposes based on traffic patterns. Still, it will come at a cost: 7 billion."It's expensive but I think it's worth the investment," Ikhrata said. "I think it's more expensive not to do it than to do it."Ikhrata says the plan will have to go to a public vote, and that it could involve a tax increase. But, he said federal and state governments would match every dollar spent locally with nearly two and a half of their own.Friday's presentation to the SANDAG board of directors was entirely informational, so there was no vote. The agency's staff will return in December with more details on projects and schedules. 1277

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More local employees are losing their employer health insurance benefits during the COVID-19 crisis.10News was contacted about employees at the San Marcos Veterinary Clinic who were apparently working just as many hours but their medical benefits have been dropped.10News spoke to the owner of the clinic on Thursday who said she was forced to make the tough and emotional call to drop her 13 employees' health benefits, including her own, in order to keep them on the payroll and keep the clinic’s lights on during the pandemic. She said the decision was made out of desperation. Not greed. On Thursday, 10News interviewed Anthony Wright with Health Access California, a consumer advocacy group. “A stay in the hospital for say seven or ten days on a ventilator, which is the treatment for having a severe case of this virus, could be in the tens of thousands of dollars if you're not covered” he told 10News.So, what if you lose your coverage during the pandemic? Wright told 10News that Californians can try COBRA, which temporarily extends your same employer-based health plan, but there’s a downside. “That's a very expensive option for most people,” he added.Wright said a better option could be Covered California, the state's health insurance marketplace that allows individuals to buy coverage at federally subsidized rates.Covered California’s open enrollment period has been extended through June, amid concerns over the virus. “How much Covered California costs is very much dependent on your current income. It's a percentage of your income on a sliding scale,” he said. Another option for those who've been terminated or had their hours reduced is Medi-Cal, the state's Medicaid program for people with little to no income. “Let's face it, if you need healthcare for any reason but especially for the coronavirus, that can be incredibly expensive and you want that protection,” he added.Below is a list of resources.Health Access California:https://health-access.org/2020/03/california-health-coverage-advocates-provides-practical-and-policy-advice-during-covid-19-pandemic/COBRA:https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/health-plans/cobraCovered California:https://www.coveredca.com/Medi-Cal:https://www.medi-cal.ca.gov/ 2254

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- November is nearly here and, as millions are making Thanksgiving travel plans, we’re taking a look at the cheapest ways to get around Southern California. According to AAA, more than 54 million Americans traveled more than 50 miles for Thanksgiving in 2018. The vast majority of travelers traveled by car. Below is a comparison on how much it would cost a family of four to get from San Diego to Santa Barbara and back using various methods of transportation: Taking a TrainAhead of the busy holiday, Amtrak is increasing capacity on its Pacific Surfliner route. If you were to book your trip on October 23, the cheapest tickets for a family of four cost 6 to get there and the same to get back for a total of 2. However, if you’re trying to get there quickly, you’ll save about an hour each way by driving instead of taking the train. Taking a PlaneOf course, there’s always the option of flying. As of October 23, Google Flights lists the cheapest airfare for a family of four as 8 roundtrip. Most people, however, choose to travel by car, according to AAA, and that may be your cheapest option despite recently skyrocketing gas prices. Taking a CarThere are many cost factors to consider, including the make, model and year of your vehicle, how many miles per gallon it gets, fuel cost around Thanksgiving and traffic. So, let’s assume you drive a 2015 Kia Forte. Currently, gas is just over per gallon. Assuming you fill up twice between San Diego and Santa Barbara and twice on the trip back, fuel would cost just over 1. Even as gas prices remain extremely high compared to the national average, getting to your Thanksgiving destination by car is the cheapest option. The above estimates assume a family of four is traveling between Wednesday, November 27 and Saturday, November 30 between San Diego and Santa Barbara. Of course, prices on all methods of transportation listed above are subject to change, especially as the holiday gets closer. 1994
