KATHMANDU, Nepal — China and Nepal have jointly announced a new official height for Mount Everest, ending a discrepancy between the two nations that share a border on the world's highest mountain. The new height of the world's highest peak is 8,848 meters (29,032 feet), slightly more than Nepal's previous measurement and about four meters (13 feet) higher than China's. It's also higher than the 29,029-foot-height commonly used dating back to a survey conducted by India in the early 1950s. The new height was agreed on after the two counties sent surveyors from their respective sides of the mountain in 2019 and 2020. The teams used a combination of old-fashioned trigonometry and the latest technology that relies on readings from satellite navigation systems and models of sea level, according to the Washington Post. “We can be confident that this is the most accurate height of Everest that we have ever had,” said Susheel Dangol, Nepal’s chief survey officer, who headed the project. “It was a huge responsibility on our part. It is a moment of great pride for us.”There had been debate over the actual height and concern that Everest might have shrunk after a major earthquake in Nepal in 2015. Just because you're bankrupt doesn't mean you don't need a hand during the holiday season.Toys R Us, which filed for bankruptcy on Monday night, announced Thursday that it is looking to fill at least 13,000 positions nationwide for the upcoming holiday season.The toy retailer didn't give the total number of seasonal workers it plans to hire, but said it is looking for 3,800 workers in the New York area, 2,400 in greater Los Angeles as well as 2,400 at a warehouse in Groveport, Ohio that is run by DHL. It is also looking for about 1,000 workers each in the Philadelphia, Chicago and Boston markets as well as 900 work at home call center employees.Hiring workers just for the holidays will be harder for retailers this year since unemployment at at 4.4%, near a 16-year low. There are currently a record number of unfilled job openings according to Labor Department statistics. To fill the jobs in the current environment, Toys R Us has sweetened its pay package to offer employees weekend pay rates on peak holiday shopping days, as well as additional employee discounts said spokesman Joseph Contrino.Earlier this week Walmart, the nation's largest private sector employer, said that instead of hiring seasonal employees this year it will give?its existing part-time employees more hours.Toys R Us has nearly 1,000 Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores across the United States and Canada, and filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday. Jake, a coonhound, wandered a long way from his Arizona home -- more than 2,000 miles to be exact."We are just really baffled by it," said Renae Metz with A Darrah Bull Bully Rescue in Pennsylvania.A good Samaritan found the 7-year-old dog near a YMCA in Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania about 100 miles east of Pittsburgh. When they scanned him for a microchip, they found one, and it came back registered to Phoenix."We thought maybe a truck driver possibly found Jake in the middle of the night and didn't know what to do with him and brought him home, but we don't know that that's a fact," Metz said.After finding the microchip, they made the phone call to Jake's owners."We have a 7-year-old coonhound here who is registered to you, are you missing your dog?" Metz asked the owners.It turns out they were, for the past year. Jake disappeared from their north Peoria home. Getting Jake back wouldn't be easy with a brand new baby, but Metz wasn't about to give up on getting the dog home."We have 20 different drivers, three overnights and a lot of stops for Jake," Metz laughed.Metz's sister is a transport coordinator for rescued animals. She used the power of Facebook to put out the call for help and arranged for his return.From Tennessee to Arkansas to Oklahoma to Texas and New Mexico, over the past three days, the volunteers took photos along the way. KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The numbers are in: more Americans will travel this Thanksgiving than the past 12. The travel organization AAA released its annual holiday travel forecast Thursday. It predicts nearly 51 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles to celebrate the holiday. That's a 3 percent increase from last year, and the highest number since 2005. Travelers can expect to pay more for gasoline than years past, but less for airfare. AAA expects 89 percent of travelers to get to their destination by driving. To avoid getting caught in traffic, experts say you should stay off the roads the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving, especially in the afternoons. That's when normal workweek commuters and travelers are on the road at the same time. "Plan ahead. Try to make sure you're getting out the door early in the morning, if possible.
