OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — One year ago, a man opened fire inside an Otay Mesa Church's Chicken. On Friday, families are still grieving and plan to honor the somber milestone.The fast-food restaurant sits on the corner of Del Sol and Picador Boulevards. Witnesses say the man tried to use counterfeit bills to buy food and was refused.He killed Maribel Merino-Iba?ez, 28, and severely injured Mario Rojas, who is a grandfather.Friday, a drawing of Maribel's ghost above wilted flowers showed her loved ones still feel the emptiness.Rojas barely escaped that night and is still going back to the hospital."I still have more surgeries coming in, I think probably next month," Rojas said over the phone.He was shot in the arm and the stomach, which has led to back complications. Last December, when he came home from the hospital, he described how difficult his recovery has been: "He destroyed my life, my dreams everything."Rojas is in a similar state a year later, using a walker to get around and unable to work."My wife has to help me take a shower, and help me with the clothes, to change my clothes and everything," he said sadly.The restaurant paying 20 hours a week of worker's compensation, not nearly enough to pay mounting medical bills and rent."I have a lot of depression right now," Rojas said.His wife launched a GoFundMe page to help them through. PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Officials have made an arrest in the cold case of Alissa Turney, a 17-year-old girl who went missing in Arizona in 2001.The Maricopa County Attorney's Office announced second-degree murder charges against Alissa's stepfather, Michael Roy Turney, according to a press conference Thursday.Alissa went missing at the end of the school year in 2001 and was first reported as a runaway by Michael Turney, according to officials.Michael called in the runaway report, telling authorities that she had left a note and was going to California.In 2008, new information was brought to light and officials began a criminal investigation into Alissa's disappearance. Officials conducted 200 interviews with coworkers, friends, and family.When a search warrant was issued on Michael's residence, they discovered a bombing plot, at which point he was brought into custody in 2008.Officials say Michael took a plea deal and served 10 years in prison in the bombing plot, unrelated to Alissa's disappearance.He was arrested Thursday afternoon by police in Mesa in connection to her presumed death. Details on what evidence led police to believe they had enough proof in the case were not made immediately available.During the press conference, officials credited Alissa's sister, Sarah Turney, for her perseverance in this case. 1337

PALM HARBOR, Fla. — A rare two-headed southern black racer snake was recently found at a home in Palm Harbor.Kay Rogers said her cat brought the snake into the home through the doggy door. The cat placed the snake on the carpet."She brings us presents all the time. This day, my daughter sent me a message. 'Mom, she brought in a snake, and it has two heads,'" Rogers saif. "I think this tops it, but she's an adventurous cat for sure."Rogers said her 13-year-old daughter, Avery, placed the snake in a plastic container. She said her daughter and her son like learning about reptiles."We went and got like a habitat setup for it. I was talking to a couple different reptile specialists and they were kind of helping me through what to do with him like getting him a heating pad and trying to feed him," Rogers said.The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission shared the story on Facebook. FWC said the phenomenon, bicephaly, is uncommon, but happens during embryo development when two monozygotic twins failed to separate, leaving the heads conjoined onto a single body.FWC says that both heads' tongue flicks and react to movement, but not always in the same way. Two-headed snakes are unlikely to survive in the wild, as the two brains make different decisions that inhibit the ability to feed or escape from predators."Because of the two head thing, he's very uncoordinated and couldn't get to the food very well. It was like one head would see the food and try to go for it, the other would be going the other way and pulling him back," Rogers said.The snake is currently being cared for and monitored by FWC staff."He was really an easy pet," Rogers said. I really just wanted to kind of see him thrive and have people that would take care of him and give him the best chance. I know, well my daughter's research shows they don't live well in the wild at all. If you’re caught, you could pay a fine of up to a thousand dollars and go to jail for up to six months.Thomas Flores says his neighborhood has become a home to wild pigeons. “I can't even come out of my house without having pigeons flying by my head, on my roof, on the street, and the sidewalk - on my lawn,” says Flores.These birds' poop can damage your roof or your air-conditioning unit. Even worse, pigeons and their droppings carry over 60 diseases.When it comes to these nuisance birds, Todd Wagner of a Better Day Pigeon Control has seen it all.“From the roof caving in from so much feces. The gas stations also, I've seen some of them. So much feces the wind and the rain. If it gets a good rain it will blown right over,” says Wagner.He recommends taking these measures to help keep pigeons out.“Don't feed the animals outside, cats and dogs outside they love that food. If you have a spillover on your pool, get something to cover that up," Wagner said.Nearby Henderson, Nevada passed a similar law back in 2011 banning people from feeding pigeons. 1300
