SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Arts Park @ Chollas Creek has been helping young people for almost 20 years now."The reason this place was started was there was a lot of vandalism in the community. I was part of the problem then, I consider myself part of the solution," said Jose Venegas, a co-founder, and Program Coordinator at Writerz Blok. During his teenage years, Venegas turned to graffiti. "It was that or gang bang really, to be honest, I grew up in a neighborhood where there was a lot of gang activity, a lot of drugs."A twist of fate led his friends to tag a vacant property in Southeast San Diego owned by the Jacobs Center. Rather than make the teens someone else's problem, the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation embraced them, donating the space and funding materials. "We encounter a lot of youth who show artistic expression but have never had a mentor or seen professional artists doing murals, graffiti," said Bennett Peji, Vice President of Impact and Partnership for the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation. Their mission is to foster a thriving community envisioned and realized by its residents.“The identify of a place should really reflect the the community that lives there but that’s not often the case," said Peji. Jacobs Center donated the property and funded materials to make the Arts Park a reality. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Seven people were hospitalized Tuesday after two multi-vehicle crashes on Interstate 5 in the Torrey Pines area.The crashes were reported on southbound I-5 near State route 56 just before 1 p.m. Two car crashes — one four-car crash and one three-car crash — occurred in the area, forcing a complete shut down of I-5 for about an hour, according to California Highway Patrol officer Jim Bettencourt.At one point, the CHP's incident log listed as many as a dozen vehicles possibly involved in the crash. The two crashes caused a traffic backup extending to Loma Santa Fe Dr. in Solana Beach.Seven people were taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital with moderate injuries, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesperson Mónica Mu?oz.The cause of the crashes was not immediately known. 805

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Starting this fall, the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine is offering the first-ever certificate program specializing in medical marijuana.The three-semester class promises to teach health care professionals the basics of medical cannabis, so they can begin to use it in their practice."We thought it was important for health care professionals to have objective information about medical marijuana," says school President Jack Miller.Miller says part of the program's purpose is to help dispel some of the myths surrounding medical marijuana."There's a lot of misinformation," Miller says. "If CBD worked for everything that people said it worked for, we wouldn't need another medicine. It seems like the claims are that it will help everything. But really a lot more research needs to be done."Across town, that research is happening. UC San Diego's Center for Medical Cannabis Research has been studying the benefits of the drug since 2000."It's clear from our research and other people's work that there are some medicinal properties to compounds within marijuana," says CMCR Director Dr. Igor Grant.But, Grant cautions that it still may be too soon to have a degree program focused on medical marijuana."There are some things we know, but a lot of things we don't," he says. Gavin Newsom requesting more reopening guidance, after hitting pause on reopening businesses last week due to community outbreaks.With Supervisor Nathan Fletcher as the only dissenting vote, the board voted to send a letter requesting state guidance on reopening wedding receptions, hotel meetings and conferences, street fairs, playgrounds, and team competitions.They heard from dozens of people pleading with them to help save their industries. "Our industry is struggling to survive. There are people still wanting to celebrate these events which is leading to bootleg events," said one caller who works in the event industry.Another woman called in to share the challenges of trying to plan a wedding." I've had to push my wedding back twice this year and have lost thousands of dollars due to the uncertainty of when private events will be allowed," said Rachel Lee.
