In a chaotic incident that lasted more than hour, inmates inside a maximum security section at Lewis Prison repeatedly set fires outside of their cells, eventually forcing the evacuation of the entire unit. It happened on November 8, 2018 in the Rast Max Unit. Surveillance video obtained by KNXV television station shows a team of officers watched much of the destruction unfold with little or no intervention. The reason: Top officials inside the prison directed the staff to let inmates get it out of their system and avoid calling a critical incident, which would have to be thoroughly documented and sent to the Arizona Department of Corrections’ headquarters. As a result of this story, those top officials are no longer employed with the Department of Corrections. “The warden and the deputy warden of this unit, they were watching this cluster going on saying we want to minimize this,” said Carlos Garcia, a retired lieutenant and union grievance coordinator. “They don’t want anybody to see this and send out the message that we can’t control our prison. They are in fear, fear of this director.” The deputy warden was Jeff Rode, and the warden was Berry Larsen. Both retired Wednesday, the day after ABC15 contacted the state about the incident. KNXV spoke with independent sources who said both Rode and Larsen were aware of the chaotic situation. It’s a sport about discipline, competition and drive, and according to Rene Carrasco, life can always be a fight. “Mexicans, we love boxing,” says Rene. “It use to be nothing but a man’s sport, you know Machismo type of deal, but it’s evolved since then.”Rene's 15-year-old daughter, Arianna Carrasco, is one of the best boxers for her age. “It’s like a high kind of, with all the adrenaline,” Arianna describes. “That’s why I love it. I just get really focused about what I’m about to do when I box.” The 15-year-old boxer is a five-time national champion in boxing. According to her father, she has only been boxing for three years. “It’s unheard of for girls to come in with such little experience and go to the top right away,” Rene says. However, Arianna fights for more than glory, she fights for those living in the border land. “I have a really close connection to the Mexican-American heritage,” Arianna says. “Everything with my family, I feel proud when I get to go out and show that.” “Almost everything is a fight when you’re Hispanic,” Rene says. "My dad is born and raised in Chihuahua Mexico. He came here when he was 30-years-old. And what they’ve gone through, it just a pride when my daughter can go out there and perform the way she does. It’s snow day in the nation’s capital. Washington, D.C. is just one of many places being hit by winter weather as Winter Storm Petra moves across the Midwest and eastern part of the country. Seven-year-old Elin Neuville and her father got the day off and took advantage of the snow by sledding all morning. But it wasn’t fun and games for many others. The weather went downhill overnight, bringing snow, sleet, and heavy rain across the country. More than 160 million people were impacted. Here’s how it works: First, users register their information, like name and email address, on Blink Identity’s website. Next, users take and upload a selfie of themselves. The photo is then put into Blink’s database. The next time that user goes to an event, the facial recognition technology scans the user’s face and gives the green light to go in. If the scanner does not recognize the person, a red light appears and an alert sounds, letting security know that person isn’t authorized to enter. The technology will cut down on ticket scams and scalpers. Scalpers won't be able to buy tickets in bulk and jack up the prices, because there's no face registered to the ticket.
