Both President Donald Trump and President-elect Joe Biden offered their support on Thursday of a 0 billion stimulus plan hatched between a bipartisan group of moderate senators earlier this week.Trump said on Thursday he would sign the bill if it passes through Congress.“I think they’re getting very close and I want it to happen,” Trump said from the Oval Office.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell offered optimism that an agreement is within reach."Compromise is within reach,” he said from the Senate floor on Thursday. “We know where we agree, we can do this. Let me say it again--we can do this. And we need to do this."Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer seemed less certain of a potential compromise.“For some reason, in the midst of this generational crisis, Republican Leader McConnell does not seem inclined to compromise,” Schumer said. “To actually get something done. But what he wants to do is posture. To put partisan bills on the floor and say take it or leave it. The real answer here is to sit down and talk."During an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on Thursday, Biden said that Democrats should support the bill, even though he says the legislation does not go far enough.“That would be a good start. It’s not enough,” Biden told Tapper.Biden has promised a larger stimulus package once taking office in January. While Democrats will hold the White House and House of Representatives, it’s still unknown who will control the Senate. Georgia will have a pair of run-off elections in January. Democrats will need to win both races in order to allow Vice President-elect Kamala Harris to cast the tiebreaking vote in a 50/50 Senate. The proposal would provide 0 in additional unemployment benefits for up to 18 weeks. The legislation also would replenish funds for the Paycheck Protection Program and for small businesses to help make payroll as a number of companies are being forced to close to help combat the spread of the coronavirus. The current proposal calls for 8 billion to go toward support for small businesses. There would also be 0 billion earmarked for state and local governments, which have seen a drop in tax revenue due to the pandemic. There is in additional billion allocated toward the transportation industry, most notably for airlines, which have seen an over 50% reduction in business since March. However for Americans hoping to see a second stimulus check, this bill comes short on that aspect.Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said that talks of direct payments to Americans are dead at the moment. "I would say at the moment they are, but again, that's something that can be considered down the road," Mnuchin said. 2689

Barack and Michelle Obama penned a letter to the "inspiring" students of Parkland, Florida, in the wake of the tragic school shooting last month that?left 17 dead and launched a national conversation on gun violence. In the letter, dated March 10, the former President and first lady wrote that the students' leadership has "helped awaken the conscience of the nation."Many of the survivors of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting and students around the country have channeled their grief?into fighting the gun lobby, making impassioned pleas on television, meeting with lawmakers and preparing for a nationwide protest dubbed "March for our Lives," which will take place in Washington this Saturday.A source familiar with the letter, previously reported by Mic, confirmed its authenticity."We wanted to let you know how inspired we have been by the resilience, resolve, and solidarity that you have all shown in the wake of unspeakable tragedy. Not only have you supported and comforted each other, but you've helped awaken the conscience of the nation, and challenged decision-makers to make the safety of our children the country's top priority," the handwritten note said. The letter continued, "We have no doubt you are going to make an enormous difference in the days and years to come, and we will be there for you."The Obama presidency saw many tragic mass shootings in the US, including the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, two shootings at Fort Hood, the Tucson shooting that injured then-Rep. Gabby Giffords, the Aurora movie theater shooting, the Washington Navy Yard shooting, a Sikh temple shooting in Wisconsin, the Charleston church shooting and the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. One day after the Parkland attack, the former President called for "common-sense gun safety laws" in a tweet. The former President and first lady have previously expressed praise for the Parkland students. He tweeted later last month, "Young people have helped lead all our great movements. How inspiring to see it again in so many smart, fearless students standing up for their right to be safe; marching and organizing to remake the world as it should be. We've been waiting for you. And we've got your backs."And the former first lady wrote, "I'm in total awe of the extraordinary students in Florida. Like every movement for progress in our history, gun reform will take unyielding courage and endurance. But @barackobama and I believe in you, we're proud of you, and we're behind you every step of the way." 2581

Britain’s government has backtracked on plans to give Chinese telecommunications company Huawei a limited role in the U.K.’s new high-speed mobile phone network in a decision with broad implications for relations between London and Beijing. Britain imposed the ban Tuesday after the U.S. threatened to sever an intelligence-sharing arrangement because of concerns Huawei equipment could allow the Chinese government to infiltrate U.K. networks. Prime Minister Boris Johnson was under pressure from rebels in his own Conservative Party who criticized China’s new Hong Kong security law and its treatment of ethnic Uighurs, as well as Huawei’s links to the Chinese government. 682
