Some cats may seem a little more aloof than dogs, but they respond to the people they've bonded with in a similar way, according to a new study.Research at Oregon State University has shown that cats can form secure or insecure bonds with their owners. The researchers now believe the trait isn't specific to dogs, as similar research has shown, since it now applies to cats.During human attachment behavior studies, researchers look at how babies respond when they're reunited with their parent or caregiver after a short absence. When they're reunited, securely bonded babies return to exploring their surroundings in a relaxed way. About 65% of babies have a secure attachment. But insecurely attached babies will either avoid their parent or cling to them. The same tests have been simulated with primates as well. After applying it to dogs, babies and primates, the researchers wanted to see what would happen when they added cats and kittens to the scenario. The cats and kittens would individually spend two minutes in a room with their owner or caregiver. Then, the person would leave the room for two minutes, followed by a two minute reunion. This is called a "secure base test."About 65% of the cats and kittens were found to be securely bonded to their owners. Their finding shows that the cats' bonds with people were stable in adulthood, and not just present in kittens. The securely attached cats will continue to explore their surroundings after their owner returned, as well as pay attention to their owner. The insecurely attached cats showed signs of stress, like twitching tails, licking lips, avoiding their owner or jumping in their lap and not moving, which is a sign of ambivalence.A study detailing the findings published Monday in the journal 1778

Stefani Carroll-Kirchoff always checks the washer and dryer to make sure none of her three cats have climbed inside. Well, almost always.Last week, after fetching more clothes for a load of laundry, she shut the door without thinking. She set the machine to express wash -- warm water, cold rinse -- and walked away.Thirty-five minutes later, when the cycle was done, she noticed the clothes were still dripping wet. She was just about to shut the door again when she saw a single white paw sticking out from the wet laundry.Somehow, her 1-year-old cat Felix had found his way into the machine. She quickly took him out and called her father, who raced them to the Animal Emergency and Referral Center of Minnesota.Although Felix had lost his vision and had pneumonia from the amount of water in his lungs, he survived and is doing better now -- he can see and has started eating. He's still on oxygen.Though the vets told her it's just a matter of time until Felix fully recovers, Carroll-Kirchoff said she'll never forgive herself. "I've been in shock the last few days," she said. "I mean, this is going to haunt me for the rest of my life."The costs are going up, too. Carroll-Kirchoff's daughter began a GoFundMe appeal for Felix to help offset the rising medical bills, which she said are already up to ,000. She said it's the least they could do after Felix fought to stay alive."After this has happened, I'm going to find a way to give back," she said.Carroll-Kirchoff works at a pet grooming salon and has been a cat owner for 11 years. She also volunteers at a wildlife rehabilitation center in her free time. "It's given me a reason to fight harder for animals and their well-being," she said. 1718

SHELTON, Wash. — Trudging through the forest on a brisk, drizzly day, a group of preschoolers dressed in neon yellow outerwear set out to learn, despite being caught in the rain.“We've got to make sure our sleeves are tucked in; our shirts are tucked into our gear so that we stay nice and dry,” Sabrina Green explains. Tucked between two creeks and an old growth cedar forest in Shelton, Washington, is the Squaxin Island Child Development Center.Scientists agree that spending time outdoors is good for you. In recent years, preschools have started education programs that take place all outside, all the time. It’s a trend spreading across the country. Here, in what is known as their "saplings and cedars classroom," teachers focus on social and emotional development, self-regulation and good old-fashioned tree climbing.Even when the weather becomes so challenging that you can’t use traditional books or tools in the classroom, the teachers just adjust their curriculum for the environment.“Academically there's really nothing different,” says outdoor lead preschool teacher Madison Ball. “Where the teachers inside are drawing on paper, we're drawing with sticks in the mud. Where the teachers inside are playing with slime that they made out of glue, we're playing with clay that we harvested from the creek.”According to the 1352

Some Florida residents are leaving their cars at gas stations because fuel is running out before Hurricane Dorian arrives in the state.Miami resident Marion Wilkinson Scott told CNN on Friday he saw 12 cars that were left Thursday night at a Chevron on 152nd Street, five at a Mobile station in the Hammocks and two at another Chevron across from his house. He posted on Twitter a picture of one of those cars with a note on the dash: "I live close by. My car is out of gas. Please call me when more arrives!" A phone number was included."My friends have given similar reports from various places in the city. I think a lot of people were in denial about this storm. Now they are a bit panicky," Scott told CNN.He said he tried to top off his own tank at all those stations Thursday but had no luck."There isn't any. We've kept it topped off every night since last week (because Irma was a similar scenario for fuel scarcity two years ago). That ended last night when the stations all ran out of gasoline," he said."As a result, we have one unused car with a tank and another with half a tank. I hope it's enough to last til Tuesday next week. The possibilities of landfall are so broad that the entire eastern seaboard of Florida has made a run on gas simultaneously."Scott says he's apprehensive about the storm."We stocked up last week when it was a tropical storm and have reservations for a hurricane-proof hotel with a generator in Bonita Springs," he said."I have two little girls. I don't need for them to be in the heat once the electricity goes. We have shutters on our home. I'm glad we filled or tanks last week and have provisions. It is difficult to heed warnings when there is no gas at the station and no water in the market. Our tub will be filled."He says his daughters have already excitedly packed their favorite toys in backpacks for the trip across state. They're taking other measures, too. "We are people of faith. We went to the church to pray," Scott said.Other parts of Miami also have been affected by the gas shortage. The Shell on 41st Street, a main thoroughfare through Miami Beach, ran out of gas at about 10 p.m. Thursday, according to Harry, an employee who declined to give his last name. Asked when they'd be getting a delivery, he said, "We have no idea. The distributor has no idea."A few blocks south, there was a slightly chaotic scene Friday morning at the Valero on 23rd Street, where a dozen cars lined up for gas while the station still had it. Mathew Cabral filled about a dozen canisters with diesel, but not for his own use. He works for a rental company that stocks Miami Beach with chairs, cabanas and other tourist items and he and his coworkers were spending the morning getting their inventory off the beach. When asked if he was nervous about the incoming storm, he said, "No, not really, not at Category 3. But if it's a Category 4, well, that's a bit different."People in other parts of Florida posted videos on social media of long lines of cars waiting to get into gas stations.Dango Kumwenda, 24, who lives in Windermere, Florida, told CNN he waited in line for almost two hours to get gas at a Wawa station in Winter Garden."This was probably the only gas station within like a 10-mile radius with gas," he told CNN.Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis acknowledged that there is a fuel shortage across the state as Hurricane Dorian approaches. But steps are being taken to fix this issue, he said."We, in the emergency declaration, waived service and truck rates for fuel trucks so we can increase capacity for fuel being brought in. We're also going to be starting today implementing Florida Highway Patrol escorts for fuel trucks so we can increase fueling in critical parts of the state," DeSantis said during a Friday briefing. 3788
