CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — A South Bay family is trying to help residents at senior care facilities one letter at a time.When Mariana Hughes learned of the ban on non-essential visitors at local senior care facilities, the Eastlake High English teacher came up with an idea."It just broke my heart. I didn't want them to be forgotten," said Hughes.Hughes contacted four facilities in the South Bay, including several veterans homes. Her 14-year-old son Christian then started writing letters, a bunch of them. The letters are aimed at injecting a little joy."I'm just going to write more letters, whatever I can do to make people happy ... because I know these are hard times for them," he said.Hughes posted her idea on Facebook, which quickly caught fire. Others promised to write their own letters. Some sent 10news photos of children showing their cards, drawings and letters, after another teacher began her own campaign to send letters to nursing homes in the East County."If we get the word out and this catches on, lots more seniors that are lonely, afraid and sad are going to see that their community loves them," said Hughes.It's a love received, word by word."We can't maybe fix the whole world, but each person can do something every single day to lift up other people ... and this is our opportunity," said Hughes.Hughes says she's taking precautions, including washing hands before letter writing, and using stickers instead of stamps. CHULA VISTA (KGTV)-- It was back to school--virtually--for the Sweetwater Union High School District. They are the first school district in the county to start the year.Some parents said the one issue they ran into was technical problems. Gina Chavez, a mother of three and an elementary school teacher, said two of her three kids dealt with issues getting started. She said day one was "crazy."“My daughter started the day without an advisory class and no code for her science class,” Chavez said.Her other daughter couldn’t log onto her iPad, issued by the school district. “We had to scramble. I got my work computer, was able to log her on that way. [I] had to do a trouble ticket.”Two of her children have special needs and are on IEPs, individualized education programs. There still some question about how that will be handled in a remote environment.“I still haven’t heard anything as far as how they are going to specifically address his goals. I’m still waiting and if I don’t hear by the end of the week, I will be reaching out to figure that out,” Chavez said.A district spokesperson said roughly 9,400 devices were distributed last week. The majority of students were able to hold on to their devices from last year.Regarding technical problems, spokesperson Manny Rubio acknowledged the issues, but said the “issues are being resolve fairly quickly.”“It seems as though the great majority of students were logged in and had access to their classes,” Rubio wrote in an email to ABC 10News. “We do have our IT staff as well as school site staff available to answer questions and resolve issues.”Under the distance learning model, students are block schedules with three classes per day. There will be 30 to 45 minutes of virtual face time with the student’s teacher. The remaining time will be independent study, according to the plan released by the district.“I feel like I was torn in three different directions this morning trying to help every child get where they needed to be,” Chavez said. “If I had work today… I think I would have been in tears.”Chavez said she hopes the glitches get resolved by the end of the week.The Sweetwater Union High School District is facing many challenges, including a roughly million budget shortfall.An audit of the district conducted by the independent state agency Fiscal Crisis Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) showed there was enough evidence that fraud or misappropriation of funds may have occurred within the district. 2491

CINCINNATI -- A police officer working an off-duty detail at a grocery store used a stun gun on an 11-year-old girl Monday evening.The officer was working a detail at the Kennard Avenue Kroger when his attention was brought to the girl and two others who were involved in shoplifting, Lt. Steve Saunders said. The officer gave the girl several commands to stop, and then deployed the stun gun.Medics at the scene checked on the girl, and later so did staff at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Saunders said. He said that as far as he knows, the girl doesn't have any health issues as a result of the Taser deployment.Saunders said that a stun gun can be used on anyone between the ages of 7 to 70, according to Cincinnati Police Department procedure.CPD procedures on use of force state, "The TASER may be deployed on a suspect actively resisting arrest when there is probable cause to arrest the suspect, or to defend one’s self or another from active aggression."The procedure also notes that officers should consider the severity of the crime, the level of suspicion with respect to the fleeing suspect, the risk of danger to others and the potential risk of secondary injury to the suspect due to their surroundings before using a stun gun."An individual simply fleeing from an officer, absent additional justification, does not warrant the use of the TASER," CPD procedure states.The girl had a backpack full of items, Saunders said. She was charged with theft and obstruction, and then released to her parents. In the lot on Main Street and Fourth Avenue, visitors can buy anything from fish tacos and flowers to Mexican food and coffee.Just Coffee opened up about two weeks ago and owner Tyler Detweiler said he knew it was a bold move to start a new business in the middle of a pandemic, but it’s been successful so far.“People come here with the best moods. They’ve been making their own coffee for three months, four months now, and they want to go get a coffee that tastes like real coffee from a real espresso machine,” said Detweiler.He said another draw has been thanks to his business partner, the owner of Keto Dessert Company. James Baum usually delivers his sugar-free desserts to various locations in the Chula Vista area, so the partnership means one central place for locals to find his treats.Baum said his drive to sell keto dessert comes from his personal background.“They just thought I was a slow learner and then I got older and took this super long test of hundreds and hundreds of questions and realized I’m autistic,” said Baum.He said a sugar-free diet can benefit people with autism so he started the company as a way to bring dessert to keto diets. With the new spot, he’s also been able to meet members of the community and show them how successful a person with autism can be.“For me it’s a business, maybe it’s for you something else, but don’t quit. (KGTV) - Police have arrested three people in the death of a man found slumped over the steering wheel of his still moving vehicle.Chula Vista Police arrested Britney Canal, 29, of Chula Vista, Cesar Alvarado, 39, of National City, and Michael Pedraza, 27, of San Diego, in the murder of 59-year-old Mario Serhan.Witnesses found Serhan slumped over the steering wheel of his vehicle with an apparent gunshot wound to the head just before 1 p.m. on April 11.
