BEIJING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's retail sales of consumer goods grew 18.7 percent in November year on year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Saturday.Retail sales of consumer goods stood at 1.39 trillion yuan (208.1 billion U.S. dollars) in November and the growth rate was 0.1 percentage points higher than that in October, the NBS spokesman Sheng Laiyun said at a press conference.Retail sales of consumer goods in the January-to-November period reached 13.92 trillion yuan, up 18.4 percent from the same period last year.The growth rate in the January-to-November period was 0.1 percentage points higher than that in the January-to-October period.The NBS said urban consumption hit 1.2 trillion yuan in November, up 19 percent year on year.Rural residents spent 186.5 billion yuan on consumption goods in November, up 17 percent year on year.In breakdown, catering sector sales rose 19.6 percent to 160.1 billion yuan in November from a year earlier, while retail sales increased 18.6 percent to 1.23 trillion yuan in November year on year.

BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo said on Sunday that China and the United States should help ease the tensions on the Korean Peninsula and facilitate dialogues.In a phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton about the recent development on the Korean Peninsula, Dai said that China is deeply concerned with the dynamics in the area.Beijing holds that the immediate priority is to try to calm the current situation and reject any move that might escalate the tensions, he added.At the critical moment, Dai said, China and the United States should actively play a constructive role and take concerted efforts to mitigate the situation as soon as possible and safeguard peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula.The starting point of all Chinese efforts is to maintain the peninsula's peace and stability, he said, adding that all relevant parties should make joint efforts to secure an early resumption of negotiations and seek solutions via dialogues.Clinton, for her part, said that Washington and Beijing share common interests in maintaining the Korean Peninsula's stability and that cooperation is of pivotal significance.The United States is willing to work together with China to keep peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula, she added.The two sides also agreed to maintain close contact on the issue.An exchange of artillery fire between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and South Korea last week killed four people, and aroused the concerns of the international community.

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday voiced its support for a peaceful and comprehensive settlement of the Darfur issue, saying that efforts should be made to remove the root causes that resulted in such an issue.The statement came as Yang Tao, the counselor of the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, was taking the floor at an open Security Council meeting on Sudan."Currently, it is very important to maintain security and stability in Darfur," Yang said. "It is hoped that all parties to the Darfur conflict can solve their differences in a peaceful manner through political dialogue, and reconciliation should be achieved and violence avoided.""Achieving substantial result at an early date of the Darfur peace process and reaching a comprehensive political agreement represents a basic guarantee for the long-term peace and stability in Darfur," he said."Without a robust political process, there would be no peace and stability in Darfur, neither would there be the protection of civilians, humanitarian assistance, economic recovery and reconstruction," he said."We once again urged the armed groups which have not yet joined the Doha political process to do so immediately without any conditions," he said.As a mediator of the Darfur peace process, Doha has brokered several rounds of talks between Khartoum and rebel groups over the past years.The Chinese government has decided to make an additional donation of 500,000 U.S. dollars to the UN Trust Fund for the political process in Darfur, he said. BEIJING, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Ministry of Public Security said Monday that the nation's police authorities had shut down 500 underground banks since 2002 in its battle against money laundering.Ten crack-down campaigns have be waged since 2002 when the ministry set up a division dedicated to anti-money laundering, in which over 100 cases involving more than 200 billion yuan (30 billion U.S. dollars) have been handled, the ministry said in a statement.The ministry has trained more than 400 police officers specialized in handling money laundering cases over the past eight years, said the statement.In order to promote international cooperation, China joined the Moscow-based Eurasian Group on Combating Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism as a founding member state inn October 2004.In June, 2007, China joined another international anti-money laundering organization, the Paris-based Financial Action Task Force on Anti-Money Laundering.
