Every morning at 7:30, as students start to filter in, Jim Witt and his fellow administrators at Lake Schools in Northwest Ohio take to their designated posts around the school’s various hallways. They greet students, joke with them—teasing one about his Air Jordan high-tops (this is LeBron country, after all)—and just generally touch base before the day officially begins. As superintendent of the 1700-student campus outside Toledo, Ohio, Witt says he probably knows their students on “a much more personal level” than others would at districts of a similar size. And knowing your students, he says, is key in the efforts to help prevent what feels like it’s become all too common: school shootings.  And that context has made the need for the morning pleasantries that much greater.“It makes us hyper sensitive to kids who may come in one morning and be really down or upset about something,” Witt says. “We try to get to the root of that problem for various reason, school safety being one of them.”Lake Middle School principal Katie Beard agrees that administrators and teachers need to be on the lookout for warning signs, adding that when you know the students, it’s really not that difficult to tell when something’s not right.“You can tell by the way a student walks in what kind of day they’re going to have, based on seeing them every single day,” Beard said, adding that if she notices a big difference in a student’s mood, she’ll prod a little bit to find out if it’s something more serious.“You just try to have a conversation with them right away to try to head it off, [asking things like] ‘Hey, what’s going on? Bad morning?’”And when they do notice something is off, they make teachers aware and keep a closer eye.“Often times I’ll pop in to their teachers or send an email [saying] ‘hey, so-and-so looked a little off this morning, keep an eye out, if I need to come see them let me know," Beard said.Once the first period bell rings, custodians will make sure to lock all exterior doors, and Witt will roam the halls to double check the doors and look for any other kinds of threats.“I’m looking for anything that would appear to be unusual, or out of sorts, out of place,” Witt says. “We know that kids let bookbags lie around so we check those.”He says when he first became an educator, school was more about the “Three R’s”—reading, writing, and arithmetic. But he’s definitely noticed a shift in recent years. “Myself and my admin team spend more time probably worrying about…the safety of kids and staff,” he says. “It’s gone beyond just the normal curricular issues," Witt said. And that “frustrates” him, he says, “but it’s a necessity.”The school has a series of cameras, covering the entrances and exits to the various buildings. And they have also sought training for their staff from groups like the non-profit Educator’s School Safety Network. But as a small district with limited funds, Witt says investing in new security technology—things like bullet proof windows, heavy duty doors-- isn’t really on the table. But even with all the funds in the world, he’s upfront that he’s still not sure he would invest much money in “hardening” schools, noting that nothing is “100 percent intruder-proof.”So he’ll continue with the “getting-to-know-you” behavioral approach—and giving his students a hard time about their choice of NBA-inspired footwear. 3413

Fed up with limited leg room onboard airline cabins?Italian seat manufacturer Aviointeriors has come up with a design that allows passengers to stretch their legs as much as they want when they travel without any extra cost. The catch? The seats are so far upright that they'll be pretty much standing up.Unveiled at the Aircraft Interiors Expo 2018 in Hamburg, the SkyRider 2.0 aims to help airlines squeeze in more passengers by allowing an "ultra-high density" and reducing the space between rows. It's a new and improved version of a design the manufacturer revealed in 2010 but failed to get off the ground. The original Skyrider, which was was not approved by the US Federal Aviation Administration, was designed in the style of a horse saddle.Aviointeriors compared the seating position to that of a horseback rider, pointing out that cowboys can sit on saddles for hours without feeling uncomfortable.Stand up idea? The revised seats have extra padding, as well as poles to connect each row from the ceiling to the cabin floor.According to Aviointeriors, the SkyRider 2.0 "ensures an increased upright passenger position, allowing installation of the seat at a reduced pitch, while maintaining an adequate comfort."While it remains to be seen whether Aviointeriors' definition of "adequate comfort" matches the average person's, the company stresses that the seats, designed for short haul flights, have many benefits."The design of this seat enables to increase the passenger number by 20% allowing increasing profits for airline companies," says a spokesperson for Aviointeriors."Furthermore, Sky Rider 2.0 weighs 50% less than standard economy class seats and the reduced number of components enable minimum maintenance costs."Will it take off?The concept of vertical seats has been floating around for nearly two decades.Airbus proposed the idea of standing room flights as early as 2003 and in 2010, Ryanair's CEO Michael O'Leary announced that he was considering introducing special standing-room only areas of his airplanes. But the airline seems to have abandoned the idea for the time being."We have no plans to trial or introduce standing flights," a spokesperson told CNN last year. While Aviointeriors has dubbed the Skyrider 2.0 "the new frontier of low cost tickets and passenger experience," aircraft specialists have pointed out various stumbling blocks ranging from potential evacuation delays due to limited space and the fact that there is no room under the seats for personal items. The innovative seat is yet to be snapped up by an airline.   2592

Everyone can relax. Diddy is still Diddy. The mogul born Sean Combs set the internet a-Twitter over the weekend when he announced on his birthday he was changing his name to "Brother Love.""I'm just not who I am before, I'm something different," he said. "So my new name is 'Love,' a.k.a. 'Brother Love.'"Given that Combs has at various points in his rap/fashion/entrepreneurial career gone by Puffy, Puff Daddy, Puff, etc. it seemed entirely feasible. But Diddy posted a video Monday on his official Instagram account saying he was just kidding and remarking, "Well, ladies and gentlemen, today I've come to the conclusion that you cannot play around with the internet.""Due to the overwhelming response from the media out there, and just due to there not wanting to be any confusion... I was only joking, okay," said the artist still known as Diddy. "I didn't change my name. It was just part of one of my alter egos. One of my alter egos is 'Love.'"To play on one of his more famous hits, "Mo money, mo names, mo problems."A brief history of Diddy's name changes: 1072

ESCONDIDO (KGTV) - Employees of an Escondido golf course are frustrated and at their breaking point after their boss missed August 3rd's paycheck.UPDATE: Business owner paid employees missed and upcoming paycheck.Employes of the?Castle Creek Golf Course & Country Club said they heard their boss had a stroke on the first of the month and that was what caused the pay to be late. Employees were too afraid to speak on camera but said it wasn't the first time payment has been delayed.Golfers also said they've seen the course deteriorate since Osama Alkasabi took ownership in October. An employee said several people have already quit and some have their final day on the job this week.Alkasabi also owns two OAAI gas stations. Employees there vehemently defended Alkasabi but confirmed they hadn't been paid either. Employees there said Alkasabi had heart surgery."They missed only one, and that wasn't intentional," Alkasabi said over the phone. He blamed the delay on a car accident. "My car landed over the curb, and I arrived at the hospital here and had head surgery to make sure there is no bleeding, no fracture or damage," he said that happened August 1 off SR-78 near the Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside.10News spoke with Oceanside Police and California Highway Patrol and neither have records of a crash in that area for the entire week.Alkasabi's gas stations are running out of gas. The pumps at Ninth Avenue and Centre City Parkway only had one kind of gas for sale.At the station off Midway Drive and Valley Parkway, the pumps were draped with caution tape.Alkasabi blames the prior owners."They did not renew or apply for the licensing permit from the APCD," he said. The Air Pollution Control District requires gas stations to maintain permits to operate. The permits must be renewed annually, and employees say Alkasabi has owned the stations for at least four years.Alkasabi made this promise to all his employees, "receive the check tomorrow by 1:15 p.m. for all three periods, although there is one period missing. So we're making a cushion for the next two weeks."He promised along with three paychecks, one for the missed cycle, one for this week and one in advanced, that he'll give each employee a 0 bonus. He also promised several improvements to the golf course and that gas will be available at his pumps soon. 2427
