SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County health officials announced Thursday that flu activity remained steady over the last week but confirmed flu cases are still three times what they were at this time last year.The county's Health and Human Services Agency confirmed only 36 flu cases over the last week, bringing the county's 2019-2020 flu season case total to 335. The county had confirmed 109 cases at this time last year.Only two residents have died due to flu complications since the county's flu season started July 1. At this time last flu season, the county had not recorded a flu death.County health officials expect flu cases to spike as the year approaches the holiday season and gets deeper into autumn and winter."The holiday season is right around the corner," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Citing the potential risks of sexual and physical abuse to children, San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan today urged Gov. Gavin Newsom to consider allowing county school districts to make their own determinations regarding reopening in advance of a Tuesday decision that could send the county to the most restrictive tier of the state's coronavirus reopening roadmap.In a letter sent Monday to Newsom, Stephan said there has been ``a drastic increase in child predatory behavior on the internet'' with children out of school and teachers unable to ``be the eyes and ears of law enforcement'' to report suspected abuse among their students.Local reports to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force have tripled since schools were shuttered due to the pandemic, and that similar increases have been seen nationwide, Stephan said. Stephan also said domestic violence reports have increased since stay- at-home orders were issued, and that Rady Children's Hospital has seen an increase in ``consult cases,'' in which cases of suspected child abuse are reported by physicians.Stephan's letter was sent in advance of Newsom's Tuesday decision regarding San Diego County's COVID-19 category status, when the county could potentially slide into the ``Purple Tier,'' meaning many schools could not open for in-person learning.``When evaluating the health of our children and our community, we must consider the effects of COVID-19, but also acknowledge and weigh the other real and potentially more life-threatening threat from violence and exploitation of children,'' Stephan said.``This is the public safety lens that I sincerely hope you will consider.'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A teenage Oceanside resident was arrested Thursday on suspicion of gunning down another young man last week near Vista Transit Center.Homicide detectives arrested 19-year-old Issac Martinez on Tuesday in connection with the death of Jonathan Ruiz, 20, according to sheriff's officials. Martinez was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of murder and was being held without bail.Deputies responding to reports of gunfire shortly before 2:30 p.m. Nov. 4 found Ruiz gravely wounded on a dirt path off the 200 block of Olive Avenue in Vista, Lt. Michael Blevins said. Medics took the Vista resident to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.Witnesses described seeing two teenage boys or young men running away from the transit center following the shooting, Blevins said.Officials have not revealed a possible motive in the case or disclosed what led investigators to identify Martinez as a suspect in the slaying.  983

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist who allegedly struck and gravely injured a bicyclist near Lindbergh Field last month, then fled San Diego and was arrested in Kern County, pleaded not guilty Monday to a felony hit and run charge.Mauricio Flores, 29, is accused in the Aug. 21 crash at India and West Washington streets that seriously injured a 66-year-old man.The victim was hospitalized with what police at the time said was a life-threatening head injury. His current condition is unknown.Police said Flores was driving a 2005 Dodge Caravan that struck the victim.Video footage shot by a witness shows the driver of a van, which had Georgia license plates, pulling to a stop following the collision and getting out along with a female passenger, identified by police as 50-year-old Jessica Bailey.In the video, the pair walked over to the where the injured man was lying on the side of the road. After looking at him for few moments, the driver pulled the bent bicycle out from under the front of the van and set it aside, then got back into the vehicle along with his companion and drove off. A second, male passenger also was seen getting out of the van in the video, but he was not identified by police.About one week after the crash, San Diego police posted Flores and Bailey's names and pictures online and asked for the public's assistance in locating the suspects.According to the California Highway Patrol, an off-duty Kern County CHP officer who had seen a flyer about the hit-and-run case came across the Caravan while riding his motorcycle in Lake Isabella, an unincorporated community about 35 miles northeast of Bakersfield.The officer reported the van, which had California government-agency license plates.Three days later, another CHP officer spotted the van -- now bearing Vermont plates -- in a parking lot outside a Vons store in the area and called in sheriff's deputies, who found Flores and Bailey and arrested them, CHP spokesman Robert Rodriguez said.Flores was booked Sept. 3 into a San Diego County jail and remains held on 0,000 bail following his Monday morning arraignment.
