SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 16-year-old boy suspected of stealing a vehicle and leading police in San Diego on a short pursuit was hospitalized Monday evening with a broken hip after being ejected or jumping from the vehicle and being run over before the Jeep struck a traffic signal pole.Officers received information about a 2019 Jeep Compass stolen from the 3800 block of Fairmount Avenue about 7:20 p.m. and spotted the vehicle speeding and attempted to stop it near 54th Street and University Avenue, according to Officer John Buttle of the San Diego Police Department.The driver fled southbound on 54th Street and ran red lights, prompting the pursuit to be terminated, Buttle said.The suspect continued southbound on 54th Street, crossed into the northbound lanes and crashed in the Chollas Creek area into a traffic signal, where he was either ejected or tried to get out of the Jeep before it stopped and was run over, pinning his arm under a tire, Buttle said.Firefighters freed the suspect from under the Jeep and he was taken to a hospital with a fractured hip.Two 16-year-old girls in the Jeep were taken to a hospital to be evaluated, Buttle said. 1161

His company invented the first automated gene printer. "We use that system actually to print genes. Genes are made of little building blocks that you've heard of, and we use that to rapidly, and in an automated fashion, print genes that researchers can use around the world for vaccine development. "We're basically taking an entire laboratory of researchers that are doing various things, and we put it in a box," said Nelson.Researchers are using the printer to write the genes of the coronavirus."Even a nasty little thing like the coronavirus has its own genes, and there are certain genes that make that amenable to being a vaccine, and we know what those are so we put the information into the system, and we push a button and about 8 hours later that potential gene comes out ," said Nelson. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 17-year-old from San Diego driving a vehicle police suspected to be stolen was shot by a detective during a traffic stop, Hemet police said Saturday.Detectives with the department's Crime Suppression Unit conducted the traffic stop at about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 300 block of North San Jacinto Street, Lt. Jeff Davis said."Detectives transitioned to a high risk stop after a records check revealed the vehicle was reported stolen from the San Diego area. An officer involved shooting occurred during the stop," Davis said.The San Diego teen was hospitalized with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and later released to his guardian after receiving treatment, according to the news release.It was unclear what led to the shooting, and a call to Davis by a reporter Saturday morning was not returned.No officers were injured in the encounter, and an investigation was ongoing. 910

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A grand jury indictment charging three San Diegans with conspiracy to commit fraud, grand theft, forgery and identity theft was unsealed Thursday, alleging the defendants defrauded more than 100 local Navy service members out of millions by selling the service members unnecessary life insurance policies.Paul Flanagan, 54; Ranjit Kalsi, 52; and Gregory Martin II, 49, are accused of selling 4,700 life insurance policies and annuity contracts to service members who already had life insurance through the Navy, otherwise known as Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance.Prosecutors allege the defendants -- through their company, Go Navy Tax Service -- misrepresented what services the company was providing when they sold policies to the service members. Bank accounts were opened in the service members' names to make automatic payments toward the policies' premiums, though the victims believed they were signing up for a retirement savings account or other services, rather than life insurance policies.Flanagan, the company's owner, pleaded not guilty to nearly 70 felony counts at the downtown San Diego courthouse Thursday afternoon. Kalsi and Martin, who allegedly did the bulk of the sales out of the company's office -- a trailer located near the San Diego Naval Base on 32nd Street -- were arraigned Wednesday afternoon.The defendants face more than 20 years in prison if convicted of all counts, according to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office. Prosecutors allege the victims were defrauded out of around .8 million total.The company's website, www.gonavytaxservice.com, currently only provides a brief statement on its homepage, which reads, "Hello, we are currently unable to provide Tax Preparation Services this off-season. Sorry for the inconvenience. If you need anything else, please call us and leave a message. Someone will get back to you asap."Flanagan's attorney, Earll Pott, said outside court Thursday that the allegations against his client were "mystifying," as he alleged the service members should have been well aware through bank statements that their accounts were being accessed and why."If this was a fraud, it was a pretty short-lived fraud and it made no sense at all," Pott said. "Within two months, these guys were going to get statements that told them exactly what the product was that they had, and they had a clawback provision where they could come back and complain, and say `well, I didn't understand this' or 'I don't want this,' and the insurance company would have refunded the money."According to Pott, Flanagan was out of state during most of the time of the charged incidents and simply received and submitted the policy applications. But as to Kalsi and Martin, Pott said, "We don't have any reason to believe that the two agents involved did anything appropriate either."The attorney said, "The disturbing thing about this prosecution is the suggestion that the government's going to come in and second-guess whether or not you need these particular financial vehicles. There's nothing illegal about getting more insurance or having another investment vehicle that helps you feel more secure in their retirement."Kalsi’s attorney, Domenic Lombardo, had no comment at this time.Martin’s attorney, Jeremy Warren, tells 10News, “Mr. Martin has been aware of the investigation for some time and vigorously denies the allegations. He looks forward to defending himself in court.”The investigation into the alleged fraud began last year, on the basis of complaints sent to the Attorney General's office."The victims of this scam were young women and men serving our country who were essentially tricked into signing up for something they didn't need and couldn't afford." District Attorney Summer Stephan said. "Enlisted sailors were not given a chance as to whether they wanted a supplemental life insurance policy. SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- A Salt Lake City K-9 officer has been charged with aggravated assault in connection with an April 24 incident.Officer Nickolas John Pearce, 39, responded to a report of domestic violence that day. Pearce is accused of commanding his K-9, Tuco, to bite Jeffery Ryans, even though Ryans was on his knees and had his hands in the air."When K-9 Tuco engaged and was biting Ryans, [Pearce] continually praised and encouraged K-9 Tuco," a probable cause statement said. "While he was being attacked by K-9 Tuco, Ryans expressed extreme emotions reflective of pain from being bitten by K-9 Tuco and plead with the officers to stop the biting. He questioned why he was being attacked when he was not resisting."Ryans suffered large lacerations and required hospitalization for his injuries. After receiving treatment for his injuries, Ryans was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on a charge of violating a protective order.In an interview with KSTU on Wednesday, Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said they looked to see if the force used was reasonable."And in this case, the conclusion of our attorneys when we reviewed the body cam video, we looked at the reports that were generated, and we could find no lawful reason to use that police dog in the fashion that it did and resulting in the injury caused on Mr. Ryans," Gill said.(Warning: the following body camera video contains graphic language and violence) 1458
