But they are girding for the arrival of a weather system Sunday that will bring high winds and thunderstorms that could spark new fires and fan existing blazes that already destroyed nearly 1,000 homes and other structures and forced tens of thousands to evacuate. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Business owners across San Diego County were bracing for the possibility of shifting back into the most restrictive purple tier Tuesday.The county barely avoided the move and can stay in the red tier for now.“The up and down is very difficult to run any business without having any known information about what the future brings,” said Scott Lutwak, CEO of Fit Athletic Club, which has five locations in the county. “It’s been just a rollercoaster of open and close again.”If the county had to move back into the purple tier, gyms and fitness centers would have to go back to outdoor operations only.“It’s not easy to just move all the equipment that you had inside and move it into your parking lot and create a gym,” he said.Under the red tier, they can operate inside at 10 percent capacity. Lutwak said that’s still just not enough.“This number has been a very difficult number for our industry to digest because we simply cannot operate at 10 percent of our capacity.”Restaurants were also set to move back outside if we hit the purple tier. But now, 95,000 San Diegans receiving Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, will be able to apply for the CalFresh program (food stamps). “Individuals receiving SSI receives no more than 0 a month,” says Amanda Schultz Brocheo, with the San Diego Hunger Coalition. “For the majority, of SSI recipients, this all the money they have.”In San Diego, 1 in 11 older adults don’t have enough food to eat. “In some cases, we’ve heard of SSI recipients that will pull out a calendar and circle the days they are going to choose not to eat.”The San Diego Hunger Coalition says they are happy about the expansion but say the amount per day the is less than a day. “We determined that here in San Diego County the average CalFresh allotment is .07 a day.” This week also marks CalFresh Challenge Week. The organization encourages San Diegans to try living off a day for food. It’s meant to bring awareness to the food insecurities around the county. “We know that the CalFresh program is our strongest tool to for fighting hunger and also recognize that the current allotment is fairly small,” says Brocheo. “It makes it fairly difficult for people to live on that amount.
