Without major changes in almost every state, a national police misconduct database like what the White House and Congress have proposed after George Floyd’s death would fail to account for thousands of problem officers. The outlook for a policing bill is newly uncertain after Senate Democrats on Wednesday blocked a Republican proposal from moving forward. The House approved a far-reaching police overhaul from Democrats on Thursday, but it has almost zero chance of becoming law. Any eventual registry that emerges would depend on states reporting into it. But states and police departments track misconduct very differently. And some states currently don’t track it at all. 685

– One Pantry At a Time – to get grocery store gift cards to those students and their families in need. The concern: parents working hourly jobs that have been cut back – or laid off altogether – may be putting the ability of those families to get food at risk. “They're losing all of their money now,” Vena said. “They've got nothing coming in. So, for us, this was what do we need to do.” Partnering with the school principals in Arlington, the teachers are working on getting a 0 grocery store gift card into the hands of all 8,300 students who get free and reduced school meals. It’s not an official school district fundraiser – just something these teachers took it upon themselves to do. They document, via photograph, each time they meet with a school principal at the school, to hand them the gift cards for distribution. So far, they’ve raised nearly 0,000. “I think as soon as people saw that there was an opportunity to help those in need, they jumped on it,” Springberg said. “And I know that there are communities all over the country with like-minded people, who really just need some direction and to know how they can easily help the less fortunate.” It’s an idea they hope spreads beyond their community. downtown for a missing person.Four people were pulled from the debris Monday afternoon, and all were treated and released from area hospitals. However, a fifth person is still missing.Fire Chief Roy Winston said they feel they need to bring in heavier equipment to help in the search. Initially, jackhammers and smaller hand tools were being used so they didn't create more debris.Crews are searching an area estimated to be about 200-feet by 40-feet, so K9 units are being brought in to help narrow down the search area.Turner Construction will also bring in additional workers to help offload some of the concrete from the worksite.Fire crews have been working for over 19 hours at the scene, which started as a search and rescue but changed Monday around 7:45 p.m. local time to a recovery effort, according to an email sent from City Manager Patrick Duhaney to members of City Council."It goes without saying that this is a horrible tragedy," Duhaney wrote in the email. "Our thoughts are with the family of all those affected, particularly the individual who has not yet been found. We are all praying for a miracle."This story was originally published by 1163

With the rising cost of higher education, that is leaving fewer dollars in students' pockets. One example of the effect rising costs are possibly having on students is some students are going hungry. According to a Temple University study, nearly 36 percent of students were considered food insecure at some point in the proceeding 30 days of the study. Food insecurity is defined as limited or uncertain access to nutritional food. The study involved 66 institutions across 20 states and the District of Columbia. Four and two-year institutions were included in Temple's study. Also alarming according to the study was that 36 percent of college students were housing insecure, and 9 percent were homeless. And despite lower costs at two-year colleges, a higher percentage of students were facing food and housing insecurities. The study claimed 42 percent of students at two-year colleges faced food insecurities, compared to 36 percent at four-year schools. Although the costs are lower at community colleges, researchers believe the rising cost of college is a significant factor causing students to go hungry. "Prices have gone up over time," Sara Goldrick-Rab, a professor of higher education policy at Temple and the lead author of the report, told the Washington Post. "But the rising price is just a piece. This is a systemic problem." To read the full study, click here.  1439
