SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's Vector Control Program reminded residents Friday to take precautions against ticks throughout the winter season.Winter is tick season in San Diego County and residents are advised to wear insect repellant and long sleeves and pants when hiking and camping. Ticks are unlikely to be found in the county's metropolitan areas but they can and do appear in nature and back-country areas, according to the county.Ticks spread several diseases, including Lyme disease, tularemia and spotted fever."Our crews are already finding a lot of ticks out there," said Chris Conlan, a supervising vector ecologist for the county. "And even though tick-related diseases are pretty rare in San Diego, nobody wants to be bitten, or have their kids or pets bitten."Residents are advised to stay on designated hiking paths and avoid touching grass, brush and wild rodents. Ticks can also latch onto clothing and bite a host well after leaving a hiking trail or camping area. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- The first woman to assume command of a U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier has been assigned command of the San Diego-based USS Abraham Lincoln, the Navy announced Wednesday.Capt. Amy Bauernschmidt will lead one of the Navy's 11 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, after previously serving as the ship's executive officer from September 2016 to January 2019.That post was also historic, as she was the first woman to serve as second-in-command aboard an aircraft carrier, according to the Navy.Bauernschmidt is slated to take command of USS Abraham Lincoln this summer."I am incredibly honored and humbled to be selected," she said of her assignment. ``I love leading sailors and I take that responsibility extremely seriously."The Milwaukee native was part of the first graduating class in which women were allowed to serve aboard combatant ships and aircraft when she graduated from the United States Naval Academy in May 1994.She was designated as a naval aviator in 1996 and has served with several helicopter squadrons throughout her career. 1074

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego lifeguards reported that although about 155,000 beachgoers hit San Diego beaches Saturday and Sunday, the number of rescues and medical assists made by lifeguards was not excessive going into the third day of the Labor Day weekend.``On Saturday there were about 120,000 people on the beaches, and on Sunday there were about 135,000 people,'' said San Diego Lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum. ``We did about 2,000 preventative acts each day.'' Lerum said the number of rescues made both days was relatively light.`We made 15 rescues on Saturday, and 42 rescues on Sunday, mostly because the ocean has been pretty calm,'' he said. `We had more medical aids, 40 on Saturday and 35 on Sunday. We're going to probably have more than that for Labor Day, but the final figures are not yet in.''`The bulk of what we've been doing on the beaches has been taking care of sick and injured people,'' said Lerum. ''We also had a flurry of kayak rescues, About five kayaks tipped over into the ocean. We rescued those kayaks. Everybody is fine.''There was lots of boating activity over the holiday weekend.Lerum said a person fell from either Ocean Beach Pier or the seawall there about 5:30 p.m. on Labor Day. The extent of the injuries was not immediately known.``We had a ton of boating incidents on Mission Bay,'' said Lerum.``That's a big part of what we do. It was a spectacular Labor Day weekend. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The local U.S. Attorney's Office announced Monday that one of its prosecutors will oversee efforts to handle complaints of voting rights abuses and election fraud in the Southern District of California, which includes San Diego County.Assistant U. S. Attorney Christopher P. Tenorio has been appointed to serve as the District Election Officer for the region. Tenorio will oversee local reports of potential election fraud and voting rights violations through Election Day, in consultation with Justice Department headquarters in Washington, D.C."Every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination," U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer said. "The Department of Justice is committed to protecting the integrity of the election process, stopping fraud, and making sure votes are not stolen."Tenorio will be on duty when the polls are open, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, and members of the public can reach him by calling 619-909-7556.Additionally, the FBI will have special agents and an Election Crimes Coordinator available in field offices throughout the country to hear reports of potential fraud and other crimes related to the election. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State University reported 23 new student cases of COVID-19 Sunday, bringing the total number of cases to 621 since the fall semester began Aug. 24.University officials said they were aware of 617 confirmed cases among students and four probable cases.The university has not received any reports of faculty or staff who have tested positive since fall instruction began, SDSU health officials said.The majority of the 621 cases are students living off-campus in San Diego. About 75% of students testing positive live in off-campus housing not managed by the university, with 73% of the cases among the freshman and sophomore classes, officials said.The university said the information is based on cases reported to Student Health Services by an individual or by a public health official."As more private labs administering tests, a possibility exists that not all cases are being reported to Student Health Services," according to the SDSU COVID-19 website. "Anyone who receives a positive COVID-19 test should fill out the SDSU's online COVID-19 reporting form."For privacy reasons, SDSU does not report names, affiliations or health conditions of students, faculty or staff who test positive for COVID-19 unless a public health agency advises that there is a health and public safety benefit to reporting such details."The university will also not disclose the specific location of the individual who was infected for privacy reasons and also because avoiding the physical location does not inherently lower a person's risk of infection; maintaining healthy practices such as physical distancing, wearing a facial covering and washing your hands are the best methods to lower your risk," according to the website.The university extended its stay-at-home order for students, directing them to stay in their current residences, except for essential needs, through 9 a.m. Monday.
