SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Jayce Tingler doesn't plan to be a homebody in the San Diego Padres clubhouse."I want to be shagging in the outfield ... If you're out being active, more organic natural moments will arrive," Tingler told reporters, saying that he doesn't plan to sit in his office often.The Padres introduced the former Texas Rangers coach to the media at Petco Park Thursday. In front of a backdrop of brown and gold, general manager A.J. Preller spoke on Tingler's experience and confidence in him managing the team starting in 2020. My guess is at some point the players are going to make mistakes. So we have some common ground," Tingler said. "I hope to learn quick. I hope to have people around from various areas of expertise."Part of the expected change between 2019 to 2020 will include other coaching positions. Tingler says he's looking to surround himself with a staff that pushes players."We're in that process. We're meeting with people. The bottom line, can you build relationships and can you impact players, can you push them and make them better," Tingler said.Tingler walks into a club that has under delivered for the last decade. Last season marked the Padres' ninth-straight losing season. Former manager Andy Green didn't fair better, posting a .428 win percentage during his four seasons with the team.The last time the team finished above .500 was in 2010, under then-manager Bud Black.To that, Tingler says he's confident in the current squad of players and looks forward to his new staff forming those all important relationships to impact young players — hopefully producing a winning season."We've got a lot of players with huge upside ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Just days into California's new stay-at-home order, many businesses say this time around they won’t comply with restrictions.Some restaurant owners tell ABC 10News they’re not doing it out of defiance, but as a way to survive.“We have to stand up for ourselves. We have to open or else we lose the risk of losing our business entirely,” said Annie Rammel, the owner of Oak + Elixir restaurant in Carlsbad.Rammel said she spent ,000 to have a deck built outside of Oak + Elixir on State Street to provide a safe dining option for patrons.It was going well until she had to shut things down once again this week as COVID-19 cases surged and the state put restrictions on in-person dining were put back in place.“Closed, open, closed, open,” she said. “A lot of us are not doing well; we’re not doing well, the take out and to-go we’re losing money on that.”Rammel and a group of small business owners in Carlsbad and Oceanside decided to reopen for in-person dining Friday and take their chances, including several restaurants in the Carlsbad Village.She said if she stayed closed, her 15 employees would be laid off during an already rough year.“It’s for our employees to put food on their tables; some of them have children that they have to provide for, the holidays are coming, and I’m just not going to do that,” she said.Her patio and additional outdoor sidewalk tables were ready for customers on Friday at 4 p.m. Rammel said she expected to seat approximately 100 customers.Just next door at Caldo Pomodoro, customers were seated outside for lunch Friday.“We’re basically fighting for our lives, and we’ve been here for 29 years, it’s a family-owned and operated restaurant, it’s not that we’re doing anything wrong, we just want to survive,” said Justin Davis, who works as a server at the restaurant. “If we shut down, we’re pretty much not going to open again. We did the plexiglass, redid our tables, and invested so much money into it, and we don’t see any reason why we should shut down again.”A Carlsbad Police spokesperson said officers respond to reports of businesses operating outside of the health orders, but the goal is to gain compliance through education.However, they said willful violations witnessed by officers will be reported to the county for documentation.“We’re scared to lose our ABC license, which is our liquor license,” said Rammel. “If that happens, the group of us is saying we’re going to push through, we have some attorneys on our side, and they say we have a really good fight because there is no evidence that these spikes are coming from us.” 2614

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Images of burning homes, helicopters and flames are now a regular occurrence in California.This summer, that wildfire threat became real for the Del Cerro community.“We could hear the exploding palm trees, we could smell the toxic, frightening smoke," remembers Glenn Thomas, Vice Chair of Friends of Del Cerro.The group wanted to do something to pay back firefighters for all they do for the community. They wanted to know what the department needs to help firefighters do their job better. “We believe you find out what people want and you give it to them!” said Thomas.Friends of Del Cerro teamed up with the San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation to make something happen.What the department needs, Thomas learned, is more wildland firefighting hand tools. While these tools are currently on brush trucks, the department wants them on every engine.“There are so many more vegetation fires, and they grow so much bigger now," said Deputy Chief Steve Wright. “Something we needed that’s going to be a force-multiplier on vegetation fires that we didn’t have the immediate budget for."The group plans to raise ,000 for the tools and is halfway there thanks to a generous donation from the Padres.If you'd like to help, donate here. 1261

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Libraries across San Diego County adapted quickly during the coronavirus pandemic, offering digital options for people to continue reading, researching, and connecting with the community."It's hugely important," says Migell Acosta, the San Diego County Library System Director. "People need libraries for serious study and recreational reading and then their information needs.""We knew that our main services were going to be reference, picking up library material and connecting to our technology," adds Ady Huertas, the Supervising Librarian of Youth and Family Services for the City of San Diego. "Luckily, during this time, we've been able to maintain that service, and we're really happy that we're able to do that."Moving to digital services when the pandemic forced branches to close took some adjustments but ultimately proved successful.Libraries moved money in their budgets from buying physical books to buying ebooks so people could have more options to download. The County library system went from 2 million ebook downloads in 2019 to 3 million in 2020 and amassed the state's 2nd most extensive digital library.The City Library created a virtual hub on Facebook to connect with people through storytime, videos, and more. It quickly grew to more than 2,000 followers."We went from creating some basic programming daily to having multiple programs per day for all ages," says Huertas. "We have a schedule. We have storytimes, book clubs, book talks, crafts, stem, learning opportunities, and we even have mindfulness programs and other folks we collaborate to create the content."Both systems also gave out nearly 30,000 take-home summer reading kits to keep kids excited about literacy.The County sent magazines and paperback books to members of the homeless population living in shelters and hotels.Libraries also expanded their online learning options. The County's high school diploma program for people aged 19 and up graduated 25 people during the pandemic and currently has 100 more enrolled.They also offered access to Linda.com, an online learning library of "how-to" videos."I love YouTube like everybody else," says Acosta. "But these are classes that are more business skills, how to do a presentation, accounting skills, and then deep level computer skills."They've had several thousand hours' worths of videos already viewed on the service since they added the service.In the spring, libraries were able to add in-person pick up of books. Over the summer, they offered limited access for people to come into the branches.They also made it easier for people to become library customers by offering library cards with only a phone number or email address.To help address the equity gap, libraries also allowed people to check out computers and other devices. They also expanded wifi signals at the branches to have internet access for people sitting outside the library.Library officials say the new emphasis on digital has made them better libraries in the long run."Whenever there's a challenge to be met, and you step up to the challenge, personally or as an institution, you become better for from that experience," says Huertas. 3187
