SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The military poured .1 billion into San Diego's economy, according to the Military Economic Impact Study released Thursday.The figure higher than expected, according to Executive Director of SDMAC Mark Balmert, due to more ships stopping in San Diego and more sailors and Marines coming to the region.The author of the report, Dr. Lynn Reaser, said these numbers back the idea the military is a mega-industry. She noted San Diego is home to one in every six of the nation's sailors.The study's results were announced across the bay from Naval Air Station North Island, at the Harbor Drive Annex. Mayor Kevin Faulconer was among the speakers and drove home the message: Don't take our military for granted."Those dollars are really going to help every portion of our city," Faulconer said.The focus of this year's study surrounded NAVWAR, Naval Information Warfare Systems Command. The Navy communications headquarters used to be known as SPAWAR. "The new plan is to develop those 70 acres into a technology hub with the NAVWAR headquarters at its center and that will change the Midway District. It will be wonderful for San Diego and it's wonderful for the Navy," Balmert said. "What that's going to mean for our national security for our entire country but also to connect the airport to the trolley," Faulconer added. NAVWAR produced billion in gross regional product and houses 26,000 jobs, according to Balmert, who described the jobs as, "among the better jobs in our community they're high tech jobs, high paying jobs."The study states more than four-fifths of the workforce hold at least a four-year college degree. About two-fifths hold a Master's or Doctorate degree.Reaser said those jobs are secure and will grow, "two-thirds of NAVWAR's employees work in cyber security which is a major emerging cluster in the overall county."Balmert said the future looks brights for San Diego's military growth. He said in the next five years we will double the amount of submarines at Point Loma and add another aircraft carrier to our home port. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The fate of a beloved torrey pine - saved from the chopping block more than seven years ago - is once again in question.Along tree-lined Long Branch Avenue, one tree has captured the hearts of Jeff Ray's family."My kids loved it.  They touch it all the time.  It's wonderful," said Ray.The towering torrey pine is believed to be about 90 years old."It signifies the beauty of nature and the history of the area," said Ray.The history includes safety concerns. In 2010, with the sidewalks buckling, city experts deemed it a safety hazard, concerned the leaning tree would fall over. Upset neighbors hired their own arborist. Eventually, the city relented, deeming the tree stabile and repairing the sidewalks.  Since then, the tree has been granted Heritage status, giving it extra protections. Still, safety concerns remain.  On Wednesday afternoon, a city advisory panel met and the city's forester told the group the tree isn't just learning. It's actually on the move."The tree has moved an inch-and-a-half in the last two-and-a-half years. The city is recommending removal of the tree based on safety," said City Forester Brian Widener. 1192

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The non-profit organization Border Angels hosted its 32nd-anniversary dinner on Saturday. The dinner raises money to help continue providing the services they offer to immigrants in the community, including water drops for border crossers, legal services, and shelter. The migrant caravan and the upcoming election were hot topics of conversation during the dinner. This year the organization honorees were Margarita Zavala, Kirsten Zittlau and Jacqueline Arellano. Zavala and Zittlau are attorneys. Arellano is the water drop coordinator for Border Angels. Border Angels' founder Enrique Morones tells 10News that he decided to honor women this year. He also encouraged everyone to go out and vote on November 6th saying the president is sending the wrong message about immigrants. Guests at the event also reacted to President Donald Trump deploying the military to the border. At a campaign event, the president was not backing down, saying migrants need to come to the U.S. legally.   1051

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Surveillance footage captured a man attacking a gas station customer in Kearny Mesa before fleeing.A 54-year-old man was paying for his coffee at the Mobil station at 8380 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. on Saturday just after 3 p.m., when the suspect began speaking to the man. Police said the suspect was not making any sense when he was speaking to the victim.Then for no reason, the man pulled a small wooden bat from a tool bag and began to hit the victim on the back of his head.
