(KGTV) — Former first lady Barbara Pierce Bush has passed away in Texas. She was 92.Her passing was confirmed in a statement issued Tuesday afternoon by the Office of George H. Bush post-White House spokesman, Jim McGrath.It was reported on April 15 that after a "recent series of hospitalizations" Bush would not seek additional medical care. The two became engaged a year and a half later, just before he went off to war as a Navy torpedo bomber pilot. The Bushes married on Jan. 6, 1945.As her husband mounted a career in oil and eventually politics, Bush was a linchpin, managing 29 moves of her family.Her sixth child, Robin, died from leukemia before she was four years old. Bush said "because of Robin, George and I love every living human more," according to the White House archives.Bush was a fierce advocate in her husband's corner during his political career.Before serving as first lady, she served as second lady from 1981 to 1989. During that time Bush was a proponent of literacy, calling it the "most important issue we have." (KGTV) -- A South Bay woman is mourning the death from COVID-19 of her boyfriend and her 'second chance' at love.Derik Williams started feeling sick in early July."Felt very fatigued, no cough," said Carol Althoff.Five days later, Althoff, his girlfriend of four years, brought him to the ER."Outside, they took his temperature and it was 101°.Williams was admitted and put on a sleep apnea CPAP device to help him breathe. A few days later, she got a call."He called home and he was his old self. 'Hi, babe, how are you?'" said Althoff.She was expecting a call the next day about him coming home.Instead, a doctor called about Williams needing to be placed on a ventilator. She talked to Willliams on the phone."We cried together. We said our 'I love you.' It was extremely emotional," said Althoff.A few days later, William - a father of 4 and a grandfather - passed away, days before his 55th birthday. Althoff, whose first husband died of cancer, says she didn't think she would find love again until she met Williams a few years later."Derek was loving. He was happy and so giving," said Althoff.She says the Air Force veteran was always volunteering, whether it was for The Rock Church, Stand Down, or soup kitchens."It was part of who he was. He wanted to be a better person, better than the person he was yesterday," said Althoff.As for where the coronavirus came from, Althoff isn't sure. She says Williams was diligent about masks and mostly went to the grocery store and his work, an aerospace company where he worked as a forklift operator. Althoff is making an urgent plea to COVID-19 seriously."Please, wear your mask. If not for you, then for the person you may be encounter," said Althoff.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help with expenses.Williams did suffer from underlying conditions, including a heart condition and diabetes.The Rock Church issued the following statement:"We are deeply saddened at the loss of Derik Williams. (KGTV) -- A small plane believed to be heading to San Diego crashed in southwest Las Vegas Thursday morning.KTNV, ABC 10News' Scripps sister station in Las Vegas, reported the Clark County Fire Department and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of a small plane going down at around 9:30 a.m. local time near Raven Avenue and Hinson Street, several miles southwest of the Las Vegas Strip.The plane burst into flames following the crash.The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) told KTNV there were two people in the twin-engine Cessna 310 at the time of the crash. KTVN, citing the Clark County Fire Department (CCFD), reported the two unidentified occupants died.An FAA official told ABC 10News the plane departed North Las Vegas Airport and its end destination was listed as Gillespie Field in San Diego. The plane had reportedly taken off from the North Las Vegas airport at 9:29 a.m. and crashed at 9:38 a.m.CCFD said witnesses reported the plane flying low before hearing a crash after it disappeared from sight.Bruce Langston, who was nearby at the time of the crash, described hearing an "awful" sound and a giant "fireball" when the plane struck the wall of a construction site.The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and FAA are investigating the incident.
