MURRIETA, Calif. (KGTV) -- One second she was getting the all-clear to go into the home, and the next the walls crumbled around her. A mother trapped inside when a Murrieta home when it exploded says there’s only one reason she made it out alive. "I just saw everything crashing down around me, and I thought I was dead, I thought that was it,” said Alexis Haaland, who was inside home when it blew up. Looking at the house Tuesday, Haaland says she’s still in shock she walked away from the explosion with only a few scratches. "I just stood still and I covered my head and I was screaming oh my god, just hoping nothing hit me."Haaland was having solar panels installed at the home she lived in with her family for about a month. She says the solar company told her they hit a gas line and that she should probably leave. She took her two kids and put them outside with her mother and little brother in their van. Haaland says a firefighter told her she could go back in and get her wallet and diaper bag. That’s when the home exploded. "I just knew I had to get out, and I ran to my mom and my kids and my mom just looked at me and was like how did you get out of there."Haaland says she got out through a window that was shattered in the blast. She says she was standing by a wall, the only one left standing after the home exploded. "I'm really shook up still, having a couple panic attacks and stuff, but I'm alive, and that's all that really matters."Haaland says she’s thankful that her kids were outside the home. She says the moments after the explosion were tough, adding that her thoughts are with the man killed in the explosion and those who were injured. "There wasn't much sleep last night. Pretty much any loud noise woke me up."The family says the community has stepped up and offered to help them after they lost everything in the blast. 1865

NASA released data on Monday indicating that the polar ice cap around the North Pole shrank to near record-low levels last week following an arctic heat wave.The ice began to melt in earnest as Siberia was an estimated 14 to 18 degrees above normal during the spring.“It was just really warm in the Arctic this year, and the melt seasons have been starting earlier and earlier,” said Nathan Kurtz, a sea ice scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “The earlier the melt season starts, the more ice you generally lose.”The white color of ice causes sunlight to be reflected. But when the ice melts, the ground absorbs more sunlight, which causes the earth to heat up.2020 marked only the second time on record that the minimum sea ice dropped below 1.5 million square miles.“As the sea ice cover extent declines, what we’re seeing is we’re continuing to lose that multiyear ice,” said Mark Serreze, director of National Snow and Ice Data Center. “The ice is shrinking in the summer, but it’s also getting thinner. NATIONAL CITY — SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Trash is increasing along San Diego freeways and homelessness appears to one of the driving factors, Caltrans reports.Caltrans officials held a news conference Thursday to raise awareness of the growing problem and encourage people to do the right thing. While Caltrans has no statistics, the agency says its crews are seeing more homeless encampments along local freeways, especially through urban areas, and officials believe that's contributing to the increasing litter. "The encampments in the right of way do generate trash," said Mario Orso, Project Director for Caltrans in District 11, which covers San Diego and Imperial Counties. He stood along an on-ramp to I-805 in National City as it was being cleaned by a contracted litter crew. Orso and other Caltrans officials said along with more homeless encampments producing trash, the problem appears to be on the rise from drivers as well, especially those transporting loads of trash or refuse to landfills without properly tying down their loads. San Diego is not alone, Orso said, as Caltrans officials up and down the state are holding news conferences to increase awareness and encourage people to act responsibly.Orso said trash pickup along freeways puts those who have to clean it up, like Caltrans workers, contractors and corrections inmates, at risk. Caltrans says most of the trash is in metro areas along the 5 and 805.They're urging volunteers to get involved through the Adopt a Highway program; helping clean up a section of highway on their choosing on a periodic basis. 1589

NBA commissioner Adam Silver said Tuesday that he believes that the league's next season won't begin until 2021."We said a week ago or so that the earliest we would start is Christmas of this year," Silver told sportscaster Bob Costas during an appearance on CNN Tuesday. "But the more I'm learning and listening to Dr. Fauci this morning, I continue to believe that we're going to be better off getting into January."The NBA season typically tips off in October, with the NBA Finals culminating in June. However, the current 2019-2020 season was delayed for several months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the league is currently is still in the midst of the conference semifinals.In addition, Silver said Tuesday that it's the league's goal to play a standard 82-game season and playoffs in 2021."Further, the goal would be to play games in home arenas in front of fans, but there's still a lot we need to learn in terms of rapid testing, for example. Would that be a means of getting fans into our building? Will there be other protections?" Silver said.Upon restarting its season in July, the NBA opted to hold all games and board all players, coaches and team personnel at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney World. Players and coaches must remain at the resort at all times in order to be eligible to play. NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Nashville District Attorney's Office will no longer prosecute those who have been charged for possessing less than half an ounce of marijuana."Marijuana charges do little to promote public health, and even less to promote public safety," District Attorney Glenn Funk said Wednesday in an announcement on the policy change. "Demographic statistics indicate that these charges impact minorities in a disproportionate manner. This policy will eliminate this area of disproportionately in the justice system."View the arrests for marijuana categorized by race here.The DA's office said eliminating minor marijuana charges will lower costs for jail housing, courts and clerk's offices. The resources that would have been used to prosecute those charges will be allocated to supporting victims and prosecuting violent crime.Nashville Mayor John Cooper said in a statement that he supports the change in policy."I support the DA's decision to stop prosecuting minor marijuana offenses in Davidson County. We need to continue working to ensure that people have access to drug treatment and that we are doing everything we can to keep nonviolent young people out of the criminal justice system," Cooper said.Last fall, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation sent a memo to law enforcement across the state that said testing in marijuana cases would "only be performed on felony amounts of plant material and at the District Attorney's request if needed for trial."While the memo did not decriminalize marijuana, defense attorneys said they would be less likely to pursue prosecution for those caught with small amounts of marijuana.The Nashville People's Budget Coalition — a coalition of civil rights groups in the ciry — reacted to Wednesday's policy update, saying Funk's decision could be a beginning of meaningful change, but they want to see more."While the district attorney is attempting to show good effort, we also want to go further," Erica Perry said.
